2 Tactical Power Building Partnerships to Address Military Power Sources of the Future Dear Colleague, As more and more energy is needed on today s battlefields, it becomes increasingly essential to share knowledge and integrate resources to provide warfighters with power sources that are efficient, reliable and easy to transport and utilize. While the military continuously looks to technology to improve the warfighter s ability to dominate the battlefield, conventional batteries are unable to keep up with power demands with estimates to reach $832.2 million in Who You Will Meet: IDGA s 7th Annual Tactical Power Sources Summit is comprised of senior-level technology specialists from government agencies, research laboratories, and equipment suppliers with a range of responsibilities including: Plans & Policy Operational Requirements Program Management Technology Systems Engineering Initiatives About IDGA 2 New technological breakthroughs to power devices and machinery are at the forefront in the long war, with the key thrusts being to reduce weight, increase efficiency, and outlast mission durations all at the lowest cost possible. The Office of Naval Research is sponsoring projects to boost power density in batteries while the U.S. Army planners are also funding research into portable power generation. With President Obama earmarking $300 million dollars for the Department of Defense research in renewable energy, this timely event will examine the immediate need to utilize new emerging technologies to overcome current fuel consumption rates and address the need for improved large and small scale power. This year s event will emphasize the following key issues: Man wearable systems Fuel cell technology Lithium ion power sources Energy storage technology On-board exportable power and much more! Join us this January 20-22, 2010, as IDGA s Tactical Power Sources Summit delivers insight on the latest developments in military power sources of the future. Don t miss this great opportunity to network and forge new partnerships and solutions within this innovative community reserve your place among the stakeholders. Register yourself and your team today by calling ! I look forward to seeing you in January! Very Respectfully, Michelle Cardinal Program Director, IDGA Michelle.Cardinal@idga.org P.S. Don t forget to sign up for the Alternative Energy Focus Day! See p. 3 for details. The Institute for Defense & Government Advancement (IDGA) is a non-partisan information based organization dedicated to the promotion of innovative ideas in public service and defense. We bring together speaker panels comprised of military and government professionals while attracting delegates with decision-making power from military, government and defense industries. For more information, please visit us at Here s what delegates have said about past IDGA events: Terrific! Well done,no snafus well organized and wellplanned. Principal Member of the Technical Staff, Sandia National Labs All the speakers were well prepared and knowledgeable. This expertise will be very valuable to us in our project work. 3 Alterative Energy Focus Day Alterative Energy Focus Day Wednesday, January 20, 2010 Sign up for this in-depth and interactive Focus Day examining the latest technologies and best practices that support alternative energy solutions. During this focus day, you can expect smaller, classroom-style sessions, live applications, and in-depth discussions with the class leaders and fellow attendees. 7:30am 8:00am - 9:10am 9:15am - 10:25am 10:30am - 11:40am 11:45am - 12:45pm 12:45pm - 1:55pm Registration and Coffee Progress & Developments of Next Generation Solar Cells With single junction achieving over 20% efficiency and multijunction cells achieving over 30% (>40% under concentration!), solar cell R&D stands at the edge of a new age. This session will discuss current research poised to bring about completely new paradigms in solar cell performance. Nanostructure technologies for 3rd generation solar cells Organic technologies for low cost, scalable solar cells Lattice-mismatched and new material systems for achieving 35% one sun cells The path to 50% efficiency with concentrator solar cells Advancements in Lightweight Solar Power Solar cell technologies combining high efficiency, light weight, and flexibility are enabling portable power with energy density sufficient to significantly decrease a soldier s battery requirement. This session will highlight these technologies which are seeing rapid deployment for solider use and discuss how they can form building blocks of power stations for forward bases. Feasibility of solar power to meet soldier field power needs - power system analyses Leveraging space solar array technology development bringing the advances in space down to earth Thin film solar cell technologies status and ultimate capabilities Alternative Energy Initiatives for the Tactical Battlefield The DoD is developing a common power architecture so that any power source on the battlefield can be interconnected and intelligently managed with other power sources to efficiently meet demands for electric power on the tactical battlefield. This session will discuss the primary benefit that will establish an architecture that will allow for interoperability between various sources of power on the battlefield and the systems that need power. Lunch Renewable Energy R&D: Opportunities and Challenges The U.S. military is not just setting standards in the areas of advanced weaponry. It's also leading the renewable energy charge. It s involved in solar, geothermal and wind projects and its stake in the field will continue to grow. This session will cover how the DoD is tailoring its installation energy strategy to address efficiency improvements to existing buildings, constructing highly efficient and sustainable new facilities. Lowering costs, improving performance and scale! Session Leaders: Dr. Ryne P. Raffaelle, Director, National Center for Photovoltaics, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Dr. Robert J. Walters, Head, Solid State Devices Branch, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Dr. Steven Ringel, Professor, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Director, OSU Institute for Materials Research, The Ohio State University Enabling soldiers to lighten their loads of extra battery packs! Session Leaders: Dr. Alex Howard, Research Materials Engineer, Advanced Space Power Group, Air Force Research Laboratory Phillip Jenkins, Head, Imagers & Detectors Section, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory David M. Wilt Tech Lead, Advanced Space Power Generation, Air Force Research Laboratory Enhancing the capabilities of warfighters! Current tactical electric power landscape Ongoing initiatives and vision for the future Energy interfaces with other operational considerations Clifford W. Anderson, Logistics S&T Thrust Manager, Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism Department, ONR Setting standards in the renewable energy charge! Renewable energy from soar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and ocean resources Dr. Nancy Crews, President, Custom Manufacturing & Engineering 2:00pm - 3:10pm Renewable Biofuel Replacements for DoD With the very high true cost of JP-8 delivered to the battlefield (> $10/gal), distributed production of biomass-derived fuels is an attractive technology. Biomass material can be converted to liquid biofuels that can potentially be drop-in replacements to petroleum-derived fuels. Several feedstocks (e.g., algae, food waste, garbage, energy crops) and conversion platforms (e.g., fast pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, lipid esterification, fermentation) are being actively explored. This session will discuss finding biofuels that work with the demanding requirements for military propulsion, transportation, and power generation. Military goes Green: Reducing emissions and lowering costs! Cost of alternatives to petroleum-derived JP-8 Progress on conversion technologies Requirements for military biofuels Dr. Paul E. Yelvington, Group Leader, Energy Conversion Technology Focus, Mainstream Engineering Corporation 3 3:15pm - 4:25pm Alternative Fuels to Petroleum With fuel prices soaring, the U.S. military, the country s largest single consumer of oil, is turning into an alternative-fuels pioneer. The military is increasingly concerned that its dependence on oil represents a strategic threat. U.S. forces in Iraq alone consume 40,000 barrels of oil a day trucked in from neighboring countries. This session will cover the opportunities to provide more agile forces, reduce the fuel to the front line, the logistics footprint, the risk to personnel and achieve significant savings. Updates on synthetic blends Opportunities for cost savings Examining alternatives to current energy sources Dr. Rick Roby, CEO, LPP Combustion Fuel consumption and DoD initiatives!
