How can we help to grow our membership; by promoting the many programs of the American Legion Auxiliary, each and every day our members volunteer at VA facilities, help families in need, send cards, and the list goes on. 3 GREETINGS FROM DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS Executive Secretary/Treasurer Bonnie Dorniak Website: Phone: Toll free: FAX: Department Unit Member of the Year: Congratulations to LYNN KEEN of Wausau Unit 10 in District 8 who was selected as Wisconsin s Unit Member of the Year. Lynn was recognized at Department Convention for her positive can-do attitude which helped invigorate her unit. Lynn created many patterns for plastic canvas projects that can be used as tray favors, etc. at VA medical facilities and Veterans homes. Because of her simple designs, many members were inspired to help and have become more actively involved in Unit activities. All this started because Lynn responded to a simple Unit survey asking members what talents they would be willing to share. Lynn is working on creating a pattern book of her plastic canvas designs which will be posted on the Department website as soon as the patterns are available. National Convention: Janet Jefford of Connecticut was elected as the American Legion Auxiliary National President at the 94 th ALA National Convention. Her theme for the upcoming year is Faith, Family and Freedom. Celebrating faith, family and freedom is what the American Legion Auxiliary is all about, Jefford said. Faith in our God, one another, and our leaders; working together as a Legion Family and with our community families toward a common mission; and freedom to be who we want, say what we want and worship as we want, thanks to the selfless men and women who have died for those freedoms. National President Janet Jefford will be conducting her official visit to Wisconsin from October 23-25, and then staying in Milwaukee through November 2 nd for the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Everyone is invited to attend a dinner held in her honor on Friday, October 24 th in Eau Claire. If interested, please see the invitation enclosed in this mailing for more information. 11 CHILDREN & YOUTH PROGRAM Danie Wilson, Department Chairman 3003 Wilgus Ave., Sheboygan, WI Ph: The Children & Youth Program emphasizes protecting, caring for and supporting children and youth, particularly those of veterans and military families. Children of military families need to be recognized and honored as heroes for their sacrifices and service. Our Children are our most precious natural resource they are our future leaders, our hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. Acknowledge and thank them often. Children in our communities performing acts of physical valor or are shining examples of patriotism and Americanism through outstanding community service deserve to be recognized and awarded. By working with local civic organizations, churches, police and fire departments and following the local news theses young heroes can be identified. Your American Legion Auxiliary unit nominates them for the Youth Hero or Good Deed Awards. Awarding a child at his/her school results in positive publicity and possible new members! What a wonderful way to raise community awareness of the American Legion Auxiliary s involvement in your community! A Citation will be awarded to the unit entering the most nominations for these awards. Youth Hero Award A national award for youth under 18 years of age who perform a heroic act of physical valor. The Youth Hero & Good Deed Award Nomination Form is to be completed and mailed to your department secretary, who certifies and mails the application to National Headquarters. The award certificate, signed by the national president, will then be returned, along with a Youth Hero Award medal, to the unit to be presented on behalf of the national organization. The department Children & Youth chairman should be notified of the award. Good Deed Award A national award for youth under 18 years of age who do not meet the Youth Hero Award criteria, but who are great examples of community service in action. The Youth Hero & Good Deed Award Nomination Form is to be completed and mailed to the department secretary, who certifies and mails the application to National Headquarters. The award certificate, signed by the national president, will then be returned to the unit to be presented on behalf of the national organization. The department Children & Youth chairman should be notified of the award. Did you know? The Pennsylvania State House (where the Constitutional Convention took place) was where George Washington was appointed the commander of the Continental Army in 1775 and where the Declaration of Independence was signed in It was also where the Articles of Confederation were adopted as our first constitution in 1781.

14 EDUCATION Christine Johnsen, Department Chairman Phone: Learning occurs every day and can happen anywhere, and as children and many adults return to school this fall, there are many opportunities for Auxiliary members to promote education. The Education Program supports the American Legion Auxiliary s role in providing quality education for children and adults through classroom activities, literacy programs, scholarship promotion and support of education beyond high school, especially for military and veteran s children. Collaborate with your American Legion Post and start planning now to present Veterans in the Classroom at local schools. Consider alternate locations, too, such as at after-school programs at the Boys and Girls Club, or a public library. American Education Week is November 17-21, This is an excellent time to connect with local schools and recognize the contribution of teachers and all school personnel in the education of our next generation. Cards, flowers, or a heart-felt Thank You! are all great ways to accomplish this. In the Give 10 to Education program, Auxiliary members collect school supplies for local schools in increments of 10. Start a collection box now to prepare for much needed replenishment of school supplies when the second semester begins. Another important aspect of the Education program is the many unit, Department, and National scholarships that are available. National scholarship applications can be found in the Department Education Plan of Action and Department of Wisconsin Auxiliary scholarship applications will be available under the Scholarships link on the Department website. The most important thing to remember when reviewing scholarship applications is they need to be complete and all requested items need to be included. Too many deserving applicants are being disqualified for incomplete applications. Please work with the scholarship applicants in your area and review applications for completeness at the unit level prior to submitting them. Finally, take credit for the wonderful work that you do! Mid-Year reports for Education are due on December 15, 2014 by or USPS. The narrative reports should include details on work for the Give 10 to Education program, Veterans In the Classroom programs, unit support of veteran s associations at institutions of higher learning, and any assistance provided to students in need. Please contact me with any questions or concerns related to the Education Program.

25 VETERANS AFFAIRS AND REHABILITATION Virginia Kodl, Department Chairman Phone: This year the Field Service and Home Service hours will be combined. All hours will be combined under the heading of Service to Veterans. A new Service to Veterans pin has been designed to reflect this change. UNITS: I am encouraging all units to find needs and encourage members to help veterans in their communities. Coordinate with local quilt shops to help your unit sponsor a quilting event in support of Quilts of Valor. Contact members, including those who only occasionally attend meetings and events, for contribution to Service to Veterans. Compile and record hours provided by your members. Work with your PR Chairman to tell the community what work your unit members are doing for the Veterans. MEMBERS: You can support veterans from the comfort of your community or home. Service to Veterans combines community volunteer opportunities and volunteering opportunities created in your home. Sew quilts for the Quilts of Valor Foundation, crochet stocking hats for the homeless, bake cupcakes for the local stand downs, help a veterans use the Internet; find out what is needed, then volunteer. Be sure that you report your Service to Veterans hours to your unit VA&R Chairman. NATIONAL VETERANS CREATIVE ARTS FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 2, 2015 Remember that the American Legion Auxiliary plays a vital role as the presenting sponsor of the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Please be sure that your units help with financial donations to this program. If you are planning on attending this event in November be sure that you request your reserve tickets ahead of time. There is no cost for the tickets. As the year progresses identify arts, crafts and hobby projects targeted to veterans (such as writing, oral history recording, visual and performing arts, quilting and gardening). Contact your local VA Volunteer Services to see what they are in need of for the veterans.

26 Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (Field and Home Service) Kelli Mades, Department Chairman Service to Veterans One of the programs of Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation is that of Service to Veterans. Service to Veterans is the combination of both the Field Service and Home Service Programs; it is part of a volunteer program similar to that of the Hospital Volunteer program, but conducted in community nursing homes and non-va facilities. It will also include the hours, cost of materials and supplies of work done for veterans, such as sewing, knitting, cooking, Internet training, shopping for materials and supplies and other services performed by the volunteer in her own home. There will be a new "Service to Veterans" pin created and hour bars are still available. Coordinate with your Unit Public Relations Chairman to tell the community what work your unit members are doing for veterans. Service to Veterans completes a true record of service given by all American Legion Auxiliary volunteers for reporting to the Congress of the United States and also recognizes all volunteer hours of service by the National organization. Please NOTE: An American Legion Auxiliary resolution to combine Field and Home Service was passed at the 2013 National Convention in Houston, Texas. It will be effective with the administrative year.

27 HOMELESS WOMEN VETERANS PROGRAM Veteran Affairs & Rehabilitation Judy Walters, Department Chairman Ph: or The Homeless Women Veterans Program has proven to be a very successful program for the American Legion Auxiliary. Since the program was started in 2010, we have granted 131 women veterans grants totaling over $127,512. This program is funded strictly by donations from American Legion Auxiliary members and friends of the American Legion Auxiliary and we can t thank each and every one of you for your continued support. We couldn t have done it without it. But, we still have a long ways to go on our journey to end homelessness for our women veterans. Women are still reluctant to seek help for many of the same reasons as before: They think it is a sign of weakness to ask for help. They do not trust the Veterans Affairs System. For those with minor children, fear of having them taken away They don t think they have VA benefits. One of the biggest problems is that, for some of the reasons listed above, these women try to fix their problem(s) on their own and when it doesn t work out they finally reach out for help. Many times that is after they have received an eviction notice or have been notified their power would be shut off. Many of the applications that we receive were filed within just a few days, or in some cases, the day of the eviction date. This only puts them at greater risk of being homeless. The latest report on Homeless Veterans reports a 33% reduction in homeless veterans since In another report, it shows that not all states have seen a reduction. A Veterans Administration Homeless Outreach employee in Wisconsin reported there has been a surge of women veterans contacting them lately and she can t explain why. This is something we should all be very concerned about. We need to continue to work with our women veterans, not only with our grants, but reaching out to them in our communities and making them aware of help that is available through the VA and all the other resources that are available. Let them know we care. Please continue to support the Homeless Women Veterans Fund. Send cash donations to: ALA-Dept. Headquarters, PO Box 140, Portage, WI 53901
