1 Fort Knox AUSA Summer 2015 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE HOSPARUS TEA & AUCTION Greetings Fort Knox Chapter, AUSA Members! As the lyrics from the Kool and The Gang song state: CELE- BRATE GOOD TIMES, COME ON!!! Summer is upon us and as always, AUSA, Fort Knox Chapter continues to have LOTS to CELEBRATE!!! On June 5th, we kept the ball rollin with our annual AUSA Golf Scramble at Lindsey Golf Course on Ft. Knox. Eighty-five golfers (along with a few hackers ) participated in this event. The weather cooperated and everyone had a GREAT time. We had some AWESOME auction items to include a Cincinnati Reds baseball shirt autographed by Pete Rose. This event profited a little over $17,000 - and ALL money goes back to soldiers and families here at Ft. Knox definitely something to CELEBRATE! Thanks to everyone who supported AUSA, Fort Knox Chapter on this event. On June 12, we CELEBRATED the 240th ARMY BIRTHDAY and what a CELEBRATION this was! I used to look at birthdays as just another day until one day, our daughter made the comment that birthdays really were special. She went on to share: that s the day we blessed the world with our presence. Well we did just that with this event! We had approximately 300 in attendance representing almost every unit on post. MG. Thomas C. Seamands, United States Army Human Resources Command Commanding General, was our host. Jack L. Tilley, our 12th Sergeant Major of the Army, Retired, was our guest speaker for the night. His words brought lots of laughter, as well as a few tears as he is truly a GREAT AMERICAN and such an admirable soldier. Needless to say and regardless of the situation, when I think of birthdays now, I realize our daughter had a very valid point. For 240 years, the Army has blessed us with their presence truly something to CELEBRATE! Much like the golf scramble mentioned earlier, Fort Knox is in full swing with the ROTC Cadets on site for Leadership Training Course and the Leadership Development Advanced Course. AUSA plans to award one cadet from each of the graduating classes with a Leadership Award. During this time we will have lots of visitors from all over our nation with us to celebrate the graduation of our future leaders yet another reason to CELEBRATE! Let s make sure all of our visitors feel WELCOME! In closing, please remember our commitment for this year is to increase the membership of our AUSA chapter. Please ask a friend or co-worker to join AUSA as we strive to meet our goal and provide a STRONG voice for our community. Besides, I m looking for yet ANOTHER reason to CELEBRATE! 2 HOORAY FOR HEROES "The Ft. Knox Chapter of AUSA sponsored and donated to the tenth year of the annual Hooray for Heroes in Radcliff, KY. The event this year was held on May 16th and was dedicated to our Vietnam veterans. Normally Hooray for Heroes is a one-day event but this year the Traveling Vietnam Wall was brought to Radcliff May 14 through 17. Thousands of school children and visitors attended the Wall location as well as the actual Hooray for Heroes event. All of the activities centered around the national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam war. As usual there was free food, entertainment and static displays of military vehicles. A special program presented Vietnam veterans with a commemorative coin. Speeches were made by MG(R) Robert Silverthorn and CSM Gabriel Arnold, CSM of the US Army Cadet Command and Ft. Knox. Entertainment came from the North Hardin High School Band and the Rolling Stones Tribute Group, Satisfaction. MEMBERSHIP Hooray for Heroes was originated REPORT by the Ft. Knox Chapter and always plays a key part in its success." 3 AUSA Golf Scramble Calendar Of Events (cont.) What a great day; beautiful weather, great people and a terrific cause! Thanks to all that participated, we could not have done it without YOU! The 2015 AUSA Annual Golf Scramble was a huge success again this year raising over $17,900 after expenses. Special thanks to Clyde Hill, Ernie and the folks at Lindsey, plus the numerous others that supported the cause. This was the 1 st Year for our Military Team Division and I would like to congratulate the team from USAREC who took home top honors in this Division. Lastly and most importantly I d like to thank MG (Ret) Bill Barron for the hard work that he puts into this scramble year after year, he does it willingly and with a happy heart, Bill is a guy that puts everything he has into what he is doing and is a joy to work with. Again many, many thanks to everyone who supported us this year and a special shout out to those of you that support this cause year in and year out until next year. 4 General Membership Meeting On June 12, 2015 the Fort Knox Chapter, AUSA chapter sponsored the 240 th Army Birthday Ball at the Saber & Quill. The event was a huge success in attendance representing almost every unit on Post. MG Seamands was the host and COL TJ Edwards was the emcee. Jack Tilley was an excellent speaker and we can t thank Renee and Veterans United enough for sponsoring his trip. We presented him with a replica gold brick and an acrylic award that featured the Ft. Knox logo. Barbara Proffitt gave him one of her world-famous pies. The cake was cut by Rick Bennett, MG Seamands and the youngest soldier on post, PVT Rachel Blackney. 5 On May 1, 2015 Chapter President Rick Bennett attended the graduation ceremony for the Central Hardin H/S JROTC and presented the AUSA Award to Cadet Sergeant Keven Potter. It was so nice of Rick Bennett to attend and present the AUSA award to this outstanding student. It made for a wonderful ceremony. Haun LTC (R), US Army, Senior Army Instructor CHAPTER ACTIVITIES COL Timothy Pheil On May 15, 2015 Chapter Awards Chairman Mike Enlow presented AUSA Certificates of Commendation to (3) Honor Graduate s and (2) Iron Soldier to graduates of the Recruiting and Retention School. On May 12, 2015 Gene Gudenkauf and other chapter members attended an AAR for our Army Reserve Birthday GMM and presented certificates of appreciation as follows: COL Robert Humphrey, for his support to our chapter over the last two years has the Senior Reserve Officer for Cadet Command. COL Timothy Pheil, the Senior National Guard Rep for Cadet Command. We have called on both of these COL s many times over the last two years. MSG Delancey - Honor Graduate COL Robert Humphrey

6 On May 21, 2015 Chapter President Rick Bennett, VP Programs and publicity Kendra Stewart Scott and VP at Large Bob Roush met with Matt Deneen, President of the Elizabethtown Paddlers Association at the Freeman Lake Barn to dedicate and place the AUSA sticker on the chapter donated kayak for their Paddlers With A Purpose Project For Wounded Warriors. On June 12, 2015 the chapter presented the Honor Graduates and Iron Soldiers of the Recruiting and Retention School with AUSA Certificates of Commendation and chapter coins. Honor Graduates SSG Dominic Bloomfield and SFC Michael Jones, Iron Soldiers award SSG Simon Hernandez and SFC Durante Yarborough. They dedicated their handicapped dock and equipment such as kayaks, canoes and other adaptable equipment for Freeman Lake during Memorial Day celebrations at the park. They have partnered with the Central Kentucky Community Foundation and donations can be made out to them with EPA Paddlers Project on the memo line. Our chapter provided an Army Birthday cake for the Recruiting and Retention School. Chapter and RRS personnel cut the cake on Monday June 15th at 11:30. There were approximately 100 in attendance. Gene attended and was provided the opportunity to talk to the group about the mission, vision and benefits of AUSA membership.

7 On June 16 th, 2015 Chapter membership chairman Gene Gudenkauf presented a 5-year corporate tenure award to members of the Radcliff City Council. General Membership Meeting (cont.) On June 19 Chapter President Rick Bennett attended the RRS Graduation where he spoke to the graduates and presented certificates of Commendation and chapter coins to six graduates who attained either Honor Graduate or Iron Soldier awards.
