Every issue has highlighted a vast array of global engagement activities on campus and around the world. The spring addition adds proudly to the growing list of global engagement initiatives at BSU. Recipr ocal Exch an ge Bridgewater State University is proud to announce that our own Dr. Wing-kai To, Academic Director for the Minnock Institute, joined forces with 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow Jacquiline Amongin from Uganda to submit a successful Reciprocal Exchange Component grant application. Wing-kai will travel to Uganda with Dr. Wendy Haynes, Interim Assistant Provost for Global Engagement and Senior International Officer, to develop partnerships between BSU and Ugandan government entities, and educational and non-profit foundations, for promoting international social justice work, service learning, and educational opportunities. It is Bridgewater?s hope to deepen connections with BSU?s African colleagues. Mandela Washington Fellows DR. EDWARD W. MINNOCK INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT Global engagement is a key priority for Bridgewater State University (BSU). Through its academic and administrative units, BSU offers high-quality global engagement programs and activities for students, faculty and staff. Global engagement at BSU embodies three core values: Excellence, Opportunity & Innovation. In 2001, the Office of International Programs was created in response to BSU's increasing demand for international opportunities in teaching, learning and service. Dr. Edward W. Minnock, former vice president for the Division of External Affairs, was a pioneer in expanding BSU's international programming during the office's first decade. The name change reflects Dr. Minnock's commitment to internationalizing BSU's campus. 3 #M etoo M ovem en t STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Join The Sexual Violence Advocacy & Support Center for an interactive student panel on the #MeToo movement, on April 18 from 12-2 p.m. in RCC Council Chambers. Students will discuss how social media has played a role in awareness and empowerment, including the activism needed to keep these movements moving forward. Dr. Jamie Huff, Criminal Justice faculty member & Faculty Associate for The Sexual Violence Advocacy & Support Center will moderate the panel. Photo of Renadi Durosier M EET RENADI DUROSIER: BSU INTERNATIONAL SOCCER STAR Spr in g in t o Cu lt u r e On March 12, the International Culture Club hosted its annual Spring into Culture event. It was an evening full of cultural conversations, fun and games, and meaningful exchanges. Students, faculty and staff came out to celebrate global engagement at BSU, and learn about new areas of the world. This event was funded by the Student Government Association (SGA), and sponsored by ISSS. Physical Education, Recreation and Fitness Major Avid Soccer Player Spanish Minor Bridgewater?s very own senior, Renadi Durosier,?18, is an avid soccer player who has played in soccer leagues both domestically and internationally. Renadi studied abroad in Spring 2016 (Barcelona) and Spring 2017 (Sevilla). While in Spain he spent time honing his skills on the field and building upon his knowledge in the classroom. During the day he took three classes. When his classes were over he made time to play soccer. Renadi's experience unveiled for him a new world in the realm of soccer? one he will never forget. Renadi aspires to play professional soccer with APA Poble Sec, a professional Spanish soccer team, and he is determined to make this happen. 4 Photo by Joanna Richards,18 M EET JOANNA RICHARDS: CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE Cultural Anthropology Major Asian Studies & Music Minor Critical Language Scholarship Awardee Joanna Richards is a Cultural Anthropology major, minoring in Asian Studies and Music. In her time studying at BSU, she has gone on study tours to South Korea during the summer of 2015, and to China in the summer of In spring of 2017, Joanna participated in a semester exchange program in South Korea at Kyungpook National University. Global engagement did not stop there for Joanna. This June she will travel back to Korea to study at Pusan National University in Pusan, South Korea from June to August 2018 through the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS), a program that provides students an opportunity to study for a full academic year of a language in two months. Joanna will spend 20 hours each week studying and practicing Korean. She will have an opportunity to fully immerse herself into Korean culture, and live in a university dorm with a Korean roommate. She is ready for this intense experience because she is passionate about Korea's language and culture, and excited about this opportunity. Joanna?s goal is to conduct ethnographic research in South Korea that would include conducting interviews with locals and involving herself with local communities. Joanna has the following to say: I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn Korean with a group of students who share the same passion for the language as I do. We are not allowed to speak English for much of the program, which I believe is a fantastic part of the program. In order for effective research, it is important for me to be able to speak Korean for many reasons. I want to be able to openly speak and interview people without a translator so that I can make personal connections within the communities I will be working with. STAFF CONVERSATION CORNER: KATIE LORGE, STUDY ABROAD COORDINATOR Global Gazet t e: What kind of scholarships does the Office of Study Abroad Offer? There are many scholarships available for study abroad. The Study Abroad Office website has a detailed list of opportunities. The Gilman Scholarship is available for all Pell Grant recipients. It awards up to $5,000 a semester. The Fund for Education Abroad gives preference to students with demonstrated financial need who are traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. Awards range from $5,000 for a semester and up to $10,000 for an academic year. Global Gazet t e: What is the Critical Language Scholarship? The Critical Langauge Scholarship is a fully funded language immersion program. Students have the opportunity to study one of 14 critical languages for an 8-10 week intensive program in-country. For students trying to master one of these languages, this program can advance their skills exponentially. Recently, Joanna Richards won this scholarship to study Korean in South Korea for the summer. We couldn?t be more excited for her! GLOBA L GA Z ETTE, PA GE 4

5 Changemake (hers): Strategies of Successful Women at BSU and Cambodia Service Trip Dr. Kevin Curry and Dr. Wing-kai To led a group of students to Cambodia to install bio-sand filters for water purification over spring break from March 1 through 10. Dr. Curry has led this service learning initiative with the Water For Cambodia organization for almost a decade. This project provides clean water for rural communities in Beyond On Tuesday, March 27, International Student and Scholar Services hosted the Changemake (hers): Strategies of Successful Women at BSU and Beyond, in collaboration with the Offices of Institutional Diversity, Sexual Violence Advocacy & Support Center, and the Office of Equal Opportunity. Seventy-five people filled the council chamber to engage in an active conversation on how success is defined in the United States from the female perspective. Each panelist shared an overview of her career trajectory, current role, future goals, and what success means to Cambodia and fosters global citizenship among our students. This year the group benefitted from the support of Pannasastra University in Siem Reap and worked closely with their university students. Panelists discussed whether success is based on pay, position level, responsibilities within role, a work-life balance, or other factors. In addition, each panelist addressed workplace etiquette, expectations, office politics, and workplace negotiations from their own experiences.
