The first Academy of Sciences of Cuba was founded on May 19 of year 1861, after many years of negotiations wi e Spanish crown, and given e name of Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of La Havana. In 1902, after e establishment of e Republic, is Academy remained wi e same structure and organization, but lost e Royal adjective from its name. In 1962, e Cuban revolutionary process created e National Committee for e Academy of Sciences of Cuba, and for e first time, e Academy achieved an efficient outreach at a national level. In 1976, as part of e revolutionary State institutionalization process, e Act N 1323 of e Organization of e State's Central Administration, established e Academy of Sciences of Cuba as an administrative agency wi National Institute status. In 1980, as e Academy received e responsibilities of e State Committee for Science and Technology and was given e duty as governing body of science and technology at a national level, e Academy was granted ministerial rank. The fact at in e wake of e 150 Anniversary of its foundation, e Academy of Sciences of Cuba and its scientific community were able to congregate e leading international scientific institutions in order for eir Steering Committees to hold joint sessions is year 2010 in eir territory, such as e Global Network of Science Academies (IAP), e InterAmerican Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS), and e Caribbean Scientific Community (CCC), is an unprecedented occurrence and an act of support towards e scientific community of a country such as e Cuban one, at has been an example not only of e struggle for e respect of its sovereignty, but also since e socialist revolution of 1959, not only did it commit to overcome illiteracy, but gave precedence to education and science as integral parts of development. Nowadays e Cuban people is seen as one America's most cultured people, in spite of its backward state in regards to its economic development, warted by blockades and limitations in its international trade relations, due to e unbroken political and patriotic position of is broerly country.
