7 The Fulbright Legacy Established 1946 to expand and strengthen the relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of the rest of the world Sponsored by U.S. Department of State s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Administered by the Institute of International Education s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES)

8 Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program Supports teaching and/or research activity for three to 12 months Programs active in +125 countries for faculty, administrators and professionals 21% 41% Open to all disciplines Apply to specific award with proposed project Percentage of Scholars Application deadline: August 1 38% Most hosts are higher education institutions Eligible hosts vary by award, may include universities, research centers, institutes, laboratories, government offices, museums, etc.

19 Project Statement Your opportunity to lay out your proposed project specifics in as much detail as possible Why Fulbright and why this country/institution/organizations? Focus on what you plan to do; the specific courses you plan to teach/the methods and goals of your research Outcomes from the grant - impact on hosts, home institution and you How adaptable are you? How well will you deal with challenging situations?

20 Curriculum Vitae or Resume Very important part of the review process in US and abroad Fills in the biographical information that there is no space for in the Project Statement Up-to-date Fulbright Scholar Program 6 pages Distinguished Chairs Program 8 pages Well organized typically by topic Education Employment Publications Service Consider creating a tailored C.V. for the application

21 Select Bibliography - Research You must attach a bibliography relevant to your proposed project. It should reflect the current state of research on the proposed topic. It should reflect your knowledge of the field If the field is a large one, direct the bibliography to those works most germane to your specific interests The bibliography should not exceed 3 pages.

22 Potentially Damaging Mistakes Proposal does not match the award description Failure to describe, adequately, purpose and methodology Assumption everyone will understand why THIS research is necessary Neither applicant nor host explains the value Not written so all reviewers can understand the proposal Proposal can be understood only because reference letters are clearer than the applicant s version Time frame does not match the proposal s needs Lack of a time line a sense of how/when the grantee will accomplish the goals set out in the project
