Isolationism: a nation should interact politically as little as possible with other nations so that it can stay out of war. (p.440) 2. Internationalist Promotes cooperation between nations. An active role in international affairs is the best way to pursue national security. (The U.S. doesn t trust other countries and an occasional show of force is necessary in order to serve our national interest or the country s economic, military or cultural goals) 3. Neoisolationist : - Foreign policy involvement should be kept at a minimum for benefit of U.S. and the world. - Let countries determine their own fate. - History has shown interference hasn t been widely accepted. - Believe intervention results in getting into prolonged war. 4. Idealism - Generally take an internationalist approach. - Defending human rights is the guiding light of idealism. - Opposes alliances with authoritarian govts. (even if helpful to U.S. interests) - Some Idealists accept military intervention in certain circumstances

How many does the U.S have? - A diplomatic center used to help foreign nations settle conflicts peacefully. - There are over 160 U.S. embassies in the world. 2. Define and explain how a Treaty is completed. - A treaty is an agreement made between 2 countries. It can be about peace or economics. - The President negotiates a treaty and the U.S. Senate confirms it. 3. Explain defense alliance and provide information about NATO (see chart on page 442) - An agreement to come to the aid of another country in time of war. - NATO stands for NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION 4. Explain what USAID does. - United States Assistance International Development - Provides economic support (money) to developing countries. - $ 8 Million budget 5. Define economic sanctions - A method of using financial punishments against another country (instead of going to war) 6. Also identify another title for a person who has this job. - Members of the foreign service carry out U.S. foreign policy and provide crucial national security and economic information to policymakers in the U.S. - There are over 20,000 DIPLOMATS that work in foreign service. 3. What is the purpose of the Department of Defense? - The Department of Defense supervises the military activities of the nation and advises the President on military issues. - The leader of the Defense Department is called the Secretary of Defense 4. How many people work in the Department of Defense? - 675,000 civilians million members of the armed services - Many work in the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. 5. Hemis) 2. List the dates of 4 major wars mentioned in the reading - Spanish / American war 1898 (lasted only 4 months) - World War I 1914 ( U.S. entered in 1917) - World War (U.S. entered in 1941 due to Pearl Harbor) - Korean War What is the deterrence theory - Policy of the U.S. to build up its military strength in an effort to discourage military action of other countries. ( Basically show how big we were in hopes it would scare everybody from trying to start anything) 4. Identify the theory of containment - Basic U.S. foreign policy starting in 1947 that centered around the idea of containing the potential spread of communism. - Communism threatened democratic values and that Soviet expansion must be stopped Identify the Korean War - Following WW2, The country of Korea was divided into 2 separate countries (North and South Korea) - In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to bring South Korea under Communist rule. - In response, the United Nations sent troops to help defend S. Korea. (The United States was a major contributor of troops) - The war lasted 3 years and ended with simply a peace treaty to end fighting in Identify the Cuban Missile Crisis - In 1962 the Soviet Union began secretly installing nuclear weapons in Cuba. - President Kennedy announced a naval blockade to stop ships heading to Cuba. - For 6 days, a standoff occurred as Soviet ships approached Cuba. - Eventually the Soviets agreed to withdraw the missiles.

May 9, What are the 4 goals of the United Nations? - to maintain international peace and security. - to develop friendly relations among nations. - to achieve international cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural or humanitarian problems. - to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these commend ends. 2. What does the General Assembly discuss? - Pressing international matters such as: o Globalization, human rights, armed conflict - Each member state gets 1 vote - Critical issues require 2/3 rds majority - Less serious only need a simple majority 3.
