2 Three BPHS Sophomores Are State Forensics Champions! Three Bethel Park High School sophomores traveled to the Pennsylvania Forensics Tournament at Susquehanna University and brought home two State Championships. Sean McClaine is the State Champion in the Legislative Debate event and received the Peggy Ann Madden Outstanding Speaker Award. Jack Brownfield and Christian Smetana are the State Champions in the Public Forum Debate. Jarrod Cingel and Emily Augustine finished in Third Place in Policy Debate, and Jamie Cavrak finished in Fourth Place in Radio Announcing. Molly Graham (Impromptu Speaking) and Joe Tischler (Prose Interpretation) were Semifinalists, which means they finished among the top 12 in the State.
3 79 BPHS Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors Inducted Into National Honor Society Students who are selected for induction must maintain a minimum 3.85 QPA, complete at least 35 hours of community service each year and demonstrate leadership and character. 4 BPHS German Students Earn 11 Awards At German Day Competition Bethel Park High School German Students earned more awards than any other school at the 2014 AATG German Day Competition, held on the Washington and Jefferson College campus. 5 Erin McMahon Wins German Travel Scholarship Bethel Park High School senior Erin McMahon received the 2014 Delta Epsilon Phi Kathe Wilson Memorial Scholarship to travel to Germany this summer, where she will live with a German family, attend classes at a German secondary school and participate in excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. Erin was selected from a national pool of candidates.
6 BPHS And IMS Latin Students Earn Awards On National Latin Exams Several Bethel Park High School and Independence Middle School students performed very well on the National Latin Exams. 7 Congratulations, Jessica Viehman! Bethel Park High School sophomore Jessica Viehman earned the $50 Sponsor Award from Mascaro Construction Company at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair for her project, The Unique Properties of Pykrete. The award was given in the Outstanding Work in the Field of Engineering category.
8 Four BPHS Seniors Named Trib Outstanding Young Citizens The Tribune-Review named the following BPHS seniors Outstanding Young Citizens: Jarrod Cingel Adam Larson Valerie Poutous Liam Wolf They were among a group of 50 south and west area high school juniors and seniors who were honored at a banquet at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Young Achievers are recognized for their academic achievements and commitment to community service. Also nominated as an Outstanding Young Citizen were Jamie Cavrak, Chelsea Conway, Megan Douds, Brenna Erzen, Kevin Fleischmann, Logan Tuite, Chad Vomer and Brock Zekany.
9 Three BPHS Sophomores Named Youth Volunteers of the Year Bethel Park High School sophomores Grace Brueggman, Macy Hall and Natalie Lalama were named the Bethel Park Youth Volunteers of the Year by IN Community Magazines in recognition of their efforts to regularly correspond with American servicemen and women stationed overseas, through an organization they founded called, Bring A Smile To The Service. The students will be profiled in the Summer 2014 issue of IN Bethel Park Magazine.
10 Six BPHS Students Earn Extra Effort Award From Steel Center The Steel Center Area Vocational-Technical School presented Extra Effort Awards to six BPHS students for their outstanding attendance, theory work, shop work, work ethic and attitude during the third quarter of the school year. Receiving the awards were: Kelsey Gensler (Health Assistant) Alexander Gordon (Medium/Heavy Truck Technology) Michael Marmone (Retail Food Merchandising and Production) Steven Ott (Building Trades) Jeremy Parsons (Protective Services) Evan Sloss (Carpentry)
11 Congratulations, Amrita Beaudine! Bethel Park High School Art Student Amrita Beaudine won two awards at the Visions and Voices Student Art Exhibit, held at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute in Oakdale. Amrita earned a Second Place Award in the Two-Dimensional Fine Arts Division for her painting (pictured here). She also earned a Third Place Award in the Multi-Media Video Division for her advertisement and web page design.
12 Two BPHS Musicians Selected To Play With Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Bethel Park High School musicians Joe Beaver (trumpet) and David Uhlmann (percussion) were selected to perform with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a Side-By-Side Concert that was held on Tuesday, April 22 at Heinz Hall.
13 Rotary Names Adam Larson Its March Student Of The Month Bethel Park High School senior Adam Larson was named the March Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Bethel Park. Each month the Rotary Club recognizes an outstanding Bethel Park High School student who demonstrates outstanding commitment to school and/or community. Adam was recognized for his award-winning efforts to take the Hawk Eye student newspaper multi-media, as well as for his work with the National Honor Society and his Eagle Scout project.
14 BPHS Science Department Receives Grant From GoPRO Cameras Bethel Park High School physics students will have their Physics Day experience at Kennywood Park enhanced, thanks to a grant from GoPRO Cameras, that will provide students with a GoPRO camera and accessory package. The students will wear the camera to create videos that will explain how amusement riders experience things such as force and acceleration. BPHS Physics Teacher Lee Cristofano successfully applied for this grant.
15 BPHS Hockey Team Are 2014 USA Hockey National Champions! The Bethel Park High School Hockey Team traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to compete in the USA Hockey National Tournament and came home as the National Champions! Bethel Park defeated a team from Illinois to become the first Pennsylvania Hockey Team to win this title. They were one of 32 teams invited by USA Hockey to participate in this year s tournament. Way to go, Hawks!
16 Bethel Park Students Learning From Community Garden The Bethel Park School District is pleased to be partnering with resident Diane Ford to make the Samuel and Anna Mae Richardson Community Garden, not only a reality, but also a learning and service experience for our students. Franklin students have planted vegetable seeds in individual pots and when they are large enough, they will travel to the Garden on Willow Avenue to plant their vegetables, which will be shared with the needy in the community. Other Bethel Park schools participating in this project include Bethel Park High School and Independence Middle School.
17 Lincoln Receives $1,000 Grant From Pittsburgh Marathon Lincoln Elementary School received a $1,000 grant from the Dick s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon s Kids of Steel Program for use in the school s Physical Education Program to promote health and wellness. Lincoln was one of five area schools to receive this grant, because 185 of its students will be running in the Pittsburgh Kids Marathon on May 3 at 10 AM. As one of the five winning schools, the more than 300 students from Lincoln, Memorial and Washington Elementary Schools will be among the runners in the first four heats in the Kids Marathon. Look for a sea of black and orange shirts to be crossing the Finish Line at the Point!
18 Penn Students Recycle And Use Their New Kindle Fire Tablets William Penn Second Grade students in Mrs. Petalino s room learned about the value of recycling with a newspaper recycling project. The students learned that by recycling a four foot high stack of newspapers, they can save a 40-foot tree from being cut down. The students are also enjoying using the wireless technology provided to them through a grant of Kindle Fire Tablets from the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Thank you, Pens!
19 BPHS Social Studies Teacher Named Barnes & Noble s My Favorite Teacher Bethel Park High School Social Studies Teacher Thomas Hare was named the local winner of the Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher Contest. He was nominated by BPHS senior Sean Varley and chosen from nearly 70 nominations at the South Hills Barnes & Noble store. Students were invited to nominate their favorite teacher, to explain how their teacher has influenced their life and reveal why they appreciate and admire them. Mr. Hare and Sean were honored at an event held at the store on April 17.
