1 Clubs and Organizations Academic Team (Laura Hunter] The T. L. Hanna Academic Team meets once a week in Room 103 until 4:30 P.M. The team occasionally enjoys Trivia Night at local restaurants and traveling to other schools for academic competitions. Anyone who likes "Jeopardy" type questions will enjoy it. Participation in events is on a volunteer basis. Academic Team is a fun, enlightening experience. Artist League (Kathe Harris) This club is open to any student interested in the visual arts. Students will work with other organizations within the school and community to plan, design, and build visual presentations. Club members will organize and implement field trips, school wide art events, and social outings. ASTRA (Susan Dyar, Richard Morand) ASTRA Club is an international service project of Altrusa International. Membership is open to young women and men between the ages of 13 and 21. Members will give a minimum of 3 hours per month to projects adopted by the club that benefit our community. Members should maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher since ASTRA does involve time commitment. Scholarship and volunteering are rewarded with a $500 scholarship awarded to a graduating ASTRA senior at Awards Day. CHESS CLUB (Jeff Taylor) The T. L. Hanna Chess Club meets informally every day at lunch in room 605. Students of all ability levels are welcome, even if they don't know how to play chess. Every spring, the Chess Club takes our best nine players to represent Hanna at the Anderson Scholastic Chess Marathon at Westside High School. CHILL (Chase Culbertson - Faculty Observer) A student-run Christian club meeting on Friday mornings at 7:15 in the lecture hall before school hours begin. A faculty member is in attendance as an observer. Meetings include student and local speakers, the awesome band Elevate, as well as free donuts and orange juice. Come join us for food, fellowship, and a good time. FBLA Future Business Leaders of America (Tammy Mathews, Yvonne Weston, and Kim Styles Anderson 5 Career Campus) Future Business Leaders of America Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA- PBL) is the largest business education student organization in the world. This club is available for students in middle school, high school, and at the collegiate level. It prepares students for careers in business.

2 Each year, the best and brightest of FBLA students compete in leadership events, share their successes, and learn new ideas about shaping their career future through conferences and seminars. At the Anderson 5 Career Campus, meetings are held monthly and students work on community service projects during the first semester of school. Students concentrate on competitive events during the second semester where they are able to compete at the district, state, and national levels. Any student enrolled in a business course is eligible to join FBLA. For more information, go to or see an FBLA adviser for more information. FCA- Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Frank Grand, Coaches Huddle Leader and Faculty Observer for Student Huddle) The Fellowship of Christian Athletes challenges coaches and athletes to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. We meet on Wednesday mornings at 7:40am in the lecture hall. FCCLA Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (Jenny O Brien, Sarah Jordan, Jodi Durkee - Anderson 5 Career Campus) An organization for youth in Family and Consumer Sciences education. Any student who has taken or is currently taking Culinary Arts, Hospitality & Tourism, Fashion Design, or Interior Design is eligible to become a member. Members address personal, work, and societal issues through individual and chapter projects. State and National competitions allow members to show off their work and receive recognition for their efforts. FFA Future Farmers of America (Jay Copelan, Ashley Granata Anderson 5 Career Campus) The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. They meet at least once a month and compete at career development events, from landscape design to tractor driving. French Club (John Rogers) A club for students who are in French II or higher. The club meets during the second semester, with students gathering monthly at another member s house to enjoy good movies and cuisine. Future Educators of America (Anne Harder) FEA (Future Educators of America) is an organization that undertakes tasks connected to fostering education in our school as well as working with teachers to assist them with any tasks students can perform. Members engage in service work (with organizations such as Head Start and neighboring elementary schools) in our

3 community. Our major focus is two-fold. First, we recruit and encourage good students to consider careers in education. Also, we plan educationrelated activities and teacher appreciation events for students and teachers during American Education Week. When possible, we provide tutoring service for students at Midway Elementary and SHARE/Head Start. History Club (Ken Littlejohn) History Club is for those interested in history. The club meets in room 217 after school the last Thursday of every month and visits local places of interest (museums, battlefields, etc.) once a month on weekends. No dues (very informal) and anyone can tag along. HOSA Health Occupations of Students of America (Miranda Dermid, Shannon Merritt, Gail Nash, Randee Stewart Anderson 5 Career Campus) HOSA is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. For more information, check out and Ink Slingers (Creative Writing Club) (Kris Turner) Ink Slingers is T. L. Hanna's organization for creative writing. The members meet every Friday from 3:45-5:00 in room 118. The objectives of the club are to (1) allow students to write in different genres (2) share their writing with others (3) explore different types and forms of writing, and (4) build a workshop environment that gives students a positive forum in which they can grow as writers. The club also sponsors Open Mic Night for Hanna students to share their writing or music. All students who share an interest in writing or critiquing writing are welcome to attend. Interact Rotary (Ken Littlejohn) The Interact Club is a service club associated with Rotary International and works with Rotary Clubs in Anderson. It meets on the first Thursday of each month in the lecture hall during homeroom. Dues are $5.00 and members are required to do one service activity each semester. Junior Statesmen of America (Dan Sheridan) JSA is a political awareness club where students discuss and debate current political issues. The club meets every Wednesday morning. Key Club (Craig Joyner, Richard Baskin) The Key Club is a community service organization associated with Kiwanis Clubs International. Sample activities include collecting money, toys and food for the less fortunate in Anderson. Members are responsible for keeping Reed Road clean as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. Members also construct the homecoming float. Each member is required

4 to do at least 3 hours of community service each month. Latin (Pat Price) A club for those who are currently in or completed Latin III. Mock Trial Team (Brett Thompson) Members of the mock trial team will serve as attorneys and witnesses in the trial of a fictitious case against students from other high schools. The team will compete in the regional competition in February and have the opportunity to advance to the state championship in March. The state champion will represent South Carolina in the national championship in May. National Honor Society (Brenda Hungerford) Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 4.25 or higher are eligible. National Honor Society students must exhibit leadership, scholarship, service, and character. Students are required to complete 12 hours of community service each year. Pageant Club (Keisha Bentley) A club for senior girls that plans, organizes, and produces the Miss and Mr. T.L. Hanna Pageants. Prom Committee (Pamela Lyon, Kaitlyn Davis, Lindsey Johnson, Erin Owens) The committee meets several times in the fall to discuss prom theme, plans for the spring, and fundraising ideas. In the spring, the committee meets on a weekly basis. The committee also sponsors the Prom Dress Drive. Spanish Club (Terri McCoy) A club for those who are currently in or have completed Spanish III. Step Team (Regina Keels) A competitive dance team. Student Art Exchange (Kathy Moore) This club is student run/teacher directed. The goal of the club is to create and sell art and set up public exhibitions. The funds generated will be directed to our studio classes for supplies and equipment, projects, and community service. Learning opportunities include: learning the technical aspects of managing a website; creating original artwork; marketing skills; business organization; customer relations; and, group dynamics. Student Government (Lindsey Johnson, Erin Owens)

5 The purpose of Student Government is to represent the interests of students and increase student decision-making power, to improve student life through the creation and continuation of viable and effective student services, to preserve and protect the traditions and legends of T.L. Hanna High School, and to support students and student organizations in their academic and community endeavors. Teens for Change (Stacy Carlton) Teens for Change is a student-led volunteer service organization which aims to improve the quality of life for fellow students and the community alike. Teens for Change is unique in that service ideas are generated by club members. Teens for Change meets in the cafeteria on Fridays during homeroom. The Treehuggers (Angela Fowler) The Treehuggers is Hanna s environmental awareness club. Meetings focus on information about recycling, environmental education and activism, and ways to green your everyday life. Club members help organize get-togethers, hikes, and an annual Earth Day celebration. Join us and help save the planet, one person at a time.
