1 1. Preface 2007 Annual Meeting Report IEEE Thailand Section was established in 1977 to help developing electrical electronics and computer technologies in Thailand. It is a nonprofit organization that has been continuously transferring new technologies from abroad through organizing seminars, workshops and conferences. 2. IEEE Thailand Section Newsletter Translation of IEEE Spectrum articles IEEE Thailand Section has obtained a permission from IEEE Spectrum Magazine to translate 9 articles into Thai and publish them in the National Telecommunication Committee Technology Journal to be distributed free of charge to all telecommunication researchers, schools and university libraries, research institutes and government agencies related to telecommuncation engineering..

6 6 A Thai book about IEEE Virtual Museum A ceremony to donate 5000 books to The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology (IPST), Ministry of Education was held on April 24, The 264 pages book is a Thai version of the IEEE Virtual Museum that appears on All volunteering effort in translating and editing were carried out by 5 professors and 11 students from Chulalongkorn University, many of whom are IEEE members. The project was initiated and led by Dr. Ekachai Leelarasmee, IEEE Thailand Section secretary. It took 1 year and was funded by IEEE Foundation, IEEE Thailand Section and Thai Oil Public Company. IPST will distribute these books to approximately 4500 high school libraries serving more than 3 million students around the country. Another 1000 copies of the book will also be sent directly to high school lecturers. This book describes events, inventions and people that were significant in shaping the EE history and making technological impacts. It is divided into 7 chapters. They are 1) Socket to Me: How Electricity Came to Be 2) Thomas Edison: A Lifetime of Invention 3) Let s Get Small: The Shrinking World of Microelectronics 4) The Beat Goes On: How Sounds are Recorded and Played 5) Microwaves: From Your Kitchen to the Edges of the Universe 6) Small is Big: The Coming Nanotechnology Revolution 7) Great People in EE History It is expected that the books will significantly improve the technological literacy of Thai students as well as stimulating them to pursue a study in electrical engineering. 7 7 PES Seminar April 24, 2007 PES Chapter of IEEE Thailand Section has joined with IEEE Thailand Section, The Engineering Institute of Thailand under H.M. the King s Patronage and CEPT Chulalongkorn University to organize the technical seminar on Innovative Power System Testing Solutions at Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University for providing education and technology transfer and to promote the power engineering society to be outstanding in technical and profession. The seminar was conducted by Mr. Boonmarg Smittileela, Assistant Director, Transmission System Maintenance Division - Maintenance, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and presented by Dr. Michael Kruger, Product Line Manager, OMICRON electronics GmbH, Austria. There were 150 participants from state utility providers (i.e. EGAT, MEA and PEA), private power utility providers (SPP, IPP), consultants, contractors, industries and university professors joining this seminar. The subjects presented include a comprehensive overview of power system testing, understanding partial discharge and measurement on cables, rotating machines and power transformers, water in power transformers and experience with new tools for fault location on power transformers. 8 8 The Optic to School Project LEOS chapter has organized the Optics-to-School project in order to disseminate the knowledge of optics/photonics to the Thai society. The project included taking 40 students to the national research laboratory and showed them how optics is used in daily life. Each student was also given an introductory book entitled Photonics the miracle of light. In addition, the chapter organized one technical seminar on Future generation broadband mobile communication: Need for optical generation of mm-wave signals by Prof. B N Biswas at Mahanakorn University of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. A Lecture by President Elect of the IEEE Computer Society Prof. Dr. Rangachar Kasturi, President-Elect of IEEE Computer Society, has recently visited the Computer Chapter of IEEE Thailand Section. He gave a talk about an Overview of IEEE Computer Society and later about Research in Computer Vision at the University of South Florida. The computer chapter of IEEE Thailand Section is located at Srisakdi Charmonman IT Center ( It has one of the largest Internet training room with 408 terminals. The activities of IEEE computer society, including provision of about 300 e-learning courses free for members were described by Dr. Kasturi. He also talked about research on authentication that two or more methods should be used together. For example, in addition to password, we should use finger print, blood vessel scan, and iris scan, etc.

9 9 An electronic camp (E-Camp) organized by Chulalongkorn University Student Branch. 40 high school students around Bangkok attended a 5 day camp from October 2007 at Chulalongkorn University. Students were first introduced to basic electronic components and digital multimeter, followed by hand on experimentations with basic digital circuits using breadboards. Then a laboratory session in which each student had a chance to solder a printed circuit board with microcontrollers (MCU) from Microchip Technology. The camp concluded with a C programming lesson to program the MCU board. The major funding was obtained from National Electronic and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC). This activity has been organized by IEEE Chulalongkorn University for at least 5 consecutive years.

10 10 Seminar on Electrical and Electronic for Sustainable Development To celebrate the King s 80 th birthday in December and his concept of self sufficiency, IEEE Thailand hold a grand seminar on 2 November Various topics in Power, Electronics, Telecommunication and Information Technology were discussed under the theme Electrical and Electronic for Sustainable Development. Keynote addresses were given by Privy Councilor Air Chief Marshal Kamthon Sintuwanon, Dr. Piyaswat Amaranan (the Minister of Energy), Dr. Sittichai Pookaiyaudom (former Minister of Information and Communication Technology and IEEE Fellow) and Dr. Srisakdi Charmonman (Chairman of Computer Chapter). The total number of participants were about 400.

11 11 Joint Technical meeting on High Voltage and Power System Engineering IEEE PES chapter of Thailand Section host a joint symposium in Advanced Technologies in Power Systems from November The symposium was co-organized by IEEJ (The Institute of Electrical Engineer of Japan) and EIT (Engineering Institute of Thailand). There were 48 papers from industries, utilities and universities from Japan and Thailand. Topics were in the areas of Power System Engineering, Studies of South East Asia Power Network, Distributed Generation, Microgrid, Plant Project, Lightning and Electromagnetic Transient Program. The symposium was participated by more than 100 audiences.
