3 Letter to the Community 2016 Officers Gennaro Aiello Vice President Thoughts from the President: Barb Duffy Secretary The strength of a community is determined by its members. The mission it has, the relationships it develops, the vision it shares, and the commitments it makes are good indicators of the viability of the group. The Elk County Community Foundation is a strong, viable non-profit organization and it reflects the Elk County community at large in which it resides. The Foundation s mission is to strengthen our region through development, stewardship, and grant making as donors achieve their philanthropic goals. Through its staff of five and its board of 15 members, the Foundation sets policy and implements plans. Both staff and board keep current donors and affiliated non-profit agencies informed by means of publications, letters, social media, visits, seminars, and meetings. The Foundation continually seeks new donors and philanthropic groups to add to its ranks. Its vision is to connect people who care with causes that matter. The Foundation is committed to the highest standards of trust and accountability as evidenced through its certification in standards for excellence by the Pennsylvania Association of Non-Profit Organizations (PANO). Through the grants given to local non-profit agencies and scholarships awarded to students, the Foundation and its donors have served thousands of children and adults in Elk County for the past sixteen years. Because my Dad was a board member of the Stackpole-Hall Foundation for many years, I dreamed of having a community foundation for Elk County. I am honored to have helped in the creation of the Foundation, to have been a charter board member since its inception in 2000, and to have served as its president for the years 2015 and I will continue as a board member for the Foundation of which I am most proud because I know what a valuable asset it is. If you are connected to the Foundation as a staff or board member, as a donor, or affiliated agency, I thank you. If you are not connected in any way, I encourage you to become involved! AWARDED: 74 grants, 153 first year scholarships and 34 renewed scholarships totaling nearly $600,000. PARTICIPATED IN: The PATH Scholarship Program The Elk County Community Foundation was incorporated in the year 2000 with its first named fund being established by that year s end. In 2016, we have grown into a foundation with 141 named funds and over $9,000,000 in assets. Each fund has its own unique story that tells how people want to give back to their community. I have had the privilege and pleasure of watching the foundation grow over the past 11 years. I see the potential it has to continue to give back to our community and the numerous organizations that help to make Elk County an excellent place to live and raise a family. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and helped the Community Foundation thrive and prosper. For those who are curious about what a community foundation can do, this report has many stories and figures that will show you just how much our donors have made a difference in our community. 6 A New STEM Education Fund is when students begin to explore their career choices and wanted to see more students exposed to the Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) that involved critical thinking and problem solving. Johnsonburg Area School District used the grant money to purchase a TI-Nspire teacher pack and user system, equipment ** Special Note** The week before this writing, we were informed that Arlan Clayton had an accident and passed away the end of May. Our condolences to his wife, Dale, and family. A new STEM Education Fund was established in 2016 at the Elk County Community Foundation. Arlan Clayton, from Sarasota Florida, initiated the idea for the fund, as he had been involved with the STEM program through the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. Clayton had operated a successful manufacturing business in our community and wanted to provide meaningful, educational assistance in the communities where he had operated his businesses. Tom Jesberger, a new ECCF board member, took an interest in the fund and spearheaded working with the schools, as well as making a donation. Local county schools received $100,000 of grant funding for STEM education. The $25,000 given to each school intended to enhance or create a STEM lab at the middle school level. Mr. Clayton felt strongly that this age level Tom Jesberger and Paula Eddy gratefully accept STEM funds from the late Arlan Clayton. such as software, probes, sensors, tables, chairs, a projector, and a staff computer. Ridgway Area School District used the grant to purchase movable tables, chairs, cabinets, SmartBoards, Chromebooks and Ti-Nspire calculators to enhance the school s new STEM lab. St. Marys Catholic Middle School s STEM initiatives included upgrading lab space in a classroom and purchasing new ipads, the TI-Nspire App for the ipads, Vernier Equipment, establishing a Robotics Elective Class and curricular materials. St. Marys Area School District redesigned existing labs to support them with sustainable STEM tools and also purchased Chromebooks, calculators and numerous apps including a health monitoring program that enables students to study their physical health and well-being. In the future the Foundation is looking forward to growing the STEM fund though other donations that will encourage annual updates through a granting process. 6

7 Do You Have a Dream to Give Back to Your Community? We can help you be a philanthropist. It s easier than you think to establish a fund at the Community Foundation. Over the years, 141 DONORS just like you have started a fund in honor of someone, in memory of a loved one, or in tribute to a family name. EACH FUND TELLS A STORY. You can tell your own story by starting a named fund by GIVING cash, stock, or other assets. We will work with you or your professional advisor, if you have one, to TELL YOUR STORY. Simply tell us what kind of gift you d like to make, and we ll do the rest. With minimum donations, a fund can be established. Once it GROWS to $5,000, your fund can begin to GIVE. You don t need to be a Gates, Buffet, or a Rockefeller to make a difference. Currently, 28% of our funds have a value of less than $10,000. Elk County Community Foundation manages funds of all sizes. The Foundation staff wants to hear about your story and we can help you achieve your philanthropic goals. If you want to support a variety of nonprofits that are meaningful to you, we would recommend a DONOR/ COMMITTEE ADVISED fund. Your fund can be used to support your own charitable interests. Grant recipients are recommended by you, the donor, or a committee you choose. If you want to support students pursuing higher education, a SCHOLARSHIP fund can be established. Your fund is created to provide student scholarships. You can designate a committee to recommend the recipient, or make the choice yourself. The Foundation provides oversight. If you want to support a specific interest or nonprofit, a FIELD OF INTEREST/ DESIGNATED fund would meet your philanthropic goal. Your fund is used to support your defined interests. The Foundation will award grants to charities that follow guidelines you establish. If you want to support the most pressing issues in Elk County today and tomorrow, a DISCRETIONARY fund would ensure funds to be available, in perpetuity, for the most current community needs. Grant decisions are made by the volunteer Grants Committee and distributed through a competitive application process. Another type of fund is an AGENCY ENDOWMENT usually established by an agency or charity for the purpose of sustainability. Future donations from the public help the endowed fund grow. The agency receives annual grants from the fund. Anyone can leave a legacy by creating a fund that will impact the community forever. The minimum contribution level to start a fund is $5000, and you can do it over time. Over 5 years that is just $1000 per year or less than $100 per month. We GROW these funds by using sound investment policies that protect the principal, using both local and national managers to provide strong, steady growth. Gloria Finno Humane Society Fund Gloria Finno was a member of the community who was passionate about the Humane Society. Every year, an annual distribution of money will be given to the Humane Society thanks to her generosity and love of the organization. The Marie Brisbois Nuschke Award Fund An essay contest with the subject The Early History of Potter County and Its People is held each year for the students of the Austin Area School District. The Marie Brisbois Nuschke Award is given to the winning essay. The Larry Leightley Award Fund This award was set up by the attorney that represents Larry s parents for an annual award to the most improved member of the class considering academic scores, extracurricular activities, and community activities. 7

13 In 2016 alone, the Elk County Community Foundation awarded an outstanding $171,583 in scholarship awards to deserving area students. Although we view an education as a priceless commodity, it can become quite expensive. Through our established scholarship funds, we can assist hard-working, active students in receiving the education they need to become successful, productive members of the community. These students want to succeed, and with your help, we can send them down the right path. s: An Important Part of our Foundation By helping students pursue a higher education, we are ensuring the future of our community. Many of the scholarship winners have stated their interest in returning to our area to establish their professional careers. With the help of these scholarship funds, they can receive a quality education from a credible institution. We hope that wherever they may end up, receiving a scholarship award from our foundation has planted a seed of philanthropy that will grow with them until they are able to give back to their community, just as their community has given to them. It is amazing to see what a difference we can make in the lives of the students by awarding them these scholarships. The Elk County Community Foundation Board of Directors extends their gratitude to those who have seen the need and believe in the youth of today. Katherine Porter received the Greiner/Roof Law Scholarship The Scholarship Committee is hard at work reviewing applications and deciding awardees. I was so excited to be chosen for this scholarship! Every time I would go to my grandparents house, my grandpa, Bill MacDonald, would walk my cousins and I down to the Fava house to see the dressed up duck. We always got so happy when we would see the outfits that matched the holidays. Thank you so much for this generous scholarship that will help me in nursing. The Elk County Community Foundation Board met up at the Flying Dove Ranch to explore what s next for community philanthropy in and around our area. The board members reviewed the past operations of the Foundation, how to improve these operations, and how to implement these new tactics to move forward and grow the Community Foundation. The Board decided upon six areas for the Foundation to concentrate on. These six main focuses are: 1) Educating the public about philanthropy 2) Educating donors about community issues 3) Managing investments/endowment funds 4) Soliciting giving from local donors (individual or institutional) 5) Grant-making to nonprofits Mr. Jeffrey Spence Mr. Richard Spence Peter J. & Amy E. Women Who Care (WWC) is an allfemale organization founded in 2009 by nine women. The mission of this group is to strive to educate, encourage, and expand the number of women committed to philanthropy. They use the dollars they raise to strengthen our community by providing funds and assistance to issues that are important to families; all while having a great time. WWC is in its seventh year and is continuing to grow. For the granting cycle there were 204 members eligible to vote for their favorite community project. The Women successfully granted $24,000 to deserving nonprofit organizations around the county. Over the years, Women Who Care have granted a total of $129,700 to organizations in the community. Women Who Care held its 2016 Spring membership event in April. The event featured Patsy Cline impersonator, Heather Olsen. The Highlands, located in St. Marys, hosted the evening where the women enjoyed a great meal and were entertained by the songs of Patsy Cline. The event was a great way for current members to bring potential guests to learn more about the organization. The Granting Awards Night was in October of 2016 at the Elk Country Visitor Center with 150 members and guests in attendance. This membership year s annual business meeting Road Trip, included dinner, wagon rides, wine tasting, and an Elk Center presentation by Rawley Cogan. After dinner, the women heard from the agencies who had submitted grant requests. At the conclusion of the presentations, the members cast their ballots to determine the agencies that would be funded. The Road Trip was a successful granting night in Elk Country. Women Who Care is a Women s philanthropic giving circle. With a goal to provide grants to local charitable organizations, women make an annual contribution of a $100 minimum. Their donation entitles members to a vote to Donor Advisor for a Day winner, Joanne Ryan, chose Manufacturing Education and Employment Advancement to receive a $500 grant. decide what agencies will receive the dollars. The membership year is from October 1st to September 31st with dues being paid by June 1st of that year.
