1 A Blue Ribbon Publication The Journal Award Winning Newsletter National Naval Officers Association San Francisco Bay Area Chapter Award Winning San Francisco Bay Area Chapter October 2013 Coast Guard 2013 Civil Rights Service Provider Award Winner Biennially, the Coast Guard recognizes a Civil Right Service Provider (CRSP) who demonstrates exceptional talent and abilities and who goes beyond the call of duty in supporting the Coast Guard Civil Rights mission. ALCOAST 310/13, July 30, 2013 announces the 2013 CRSP winner, LT Howard Vacco, Civil Rights Directorate, Region 3, SFBA Chapter Treasurer. LT Vacco distinguished himself through the many benevolent acts he eagerly embraced; notably partnering with NNOA to attract and recruit civilian minorities into the federal workforce and his fundraising activities that provided scholarships for underprivileged youth. LT Vacco is commended for his exemplary service and achievements. He brings pride to the service while promoting the tenets of civil rights and equal opportunity. 2 From the President s I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your thoughts and prayers while I suffered with a recent illness, which has forced me to cut back on many chapter duties and responsibilities; and thank CDR Keyes for stepping up to the plate to assume those duties during my absence. I am doing much better now and have returned to work, and things are slowly getting back to normal. My energy is back to normal. I am feeling much like my old self with each passing day. I am delighted to hear that the chapter has establish a working relationship with CMI, Inc. the event staff company for the San Francisco 49ers football team. This relationship will allow the chapter to continue raising money to support the chapter s Hadwick and Lily Thompson Scholarship Foundation. Expect to hear more information about volunteering throughout the NFL season. I am also pleased to hear that the San Francisco Veterans Administration (VA) has asked the chapter to again perform the flag folding ceremony for the facility occupants and staff on Veterans Day, Monday, November 12. I encourage you to attend the event to visit with and honor the heroes who live at the hospital. 3 Since 1980, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) has made a commitment to the educational development of youth residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. This contribution involves a number of highly successful programs, including; youth mentoring, academic tutoring, and awarding of financial scholarships to college bound high school seniors. Hadwick and Lily Thompson Scholarship Award Criteria Eligibility Requirements: Bay Area high school seniors entering an accredited college or university as a freshman are eligible. You must be a U.S. citizen and have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scales (or equivalent). Please submit your completed package to the address listed below. Scholarship recipients will be notified in writing. Details of Award: This one-time award aims to grant an ethnic-based scholarship to a student entering college as a freshman. The recipient will be selected and announced in May. Award Amount: $1000 Package Requirements: You are required to submit the following: A completed application An official high school transcript (with school s official seal). Two Letter(s) of recommendation from an individual you know, such as a school official (principal, guidance counselor, coach, etc ) or an official from an organization. These letters should address your potential academic performance at the collegiate level. It should also state your relationship to the official and note any noteworthy/significant accomplishments. Three Counselor/Teacher Evaluation Form(s). Evaluation forms must be mailed by the individual completing the evaluation directly to NNOA. (It is recommended that you provide a stamped, pre-addressed envelope to individual completing evaluation to expedite mailing of the document). A typed 100 to 300-word essay discussing your educational and career goals A current photograph (3 x 5 minimum). Photos will not be returned. Copy of ACT and SAT results Failure to submit ALL requested information will result in disqualification. Students submitting incomplete packages will be notified. All qualified applicants will also be notified of eligibility for an NROTC scholarship. 4 2013 Upcoming Events of Special Significance Thanksgiving November 28, 2013 San Francisco Fleet Week Pier 39 plans firework displays every Saturday night in October starting at 8:30 pm but there will not be a fleet or air show at this year's Fleet Week. The Blue Angels air show and naval ship parade have both fallen victim to federal budget cuts. Fisherman's Wharf merchants have also scheduled a "Wharf Fest" - complete with food, wine, beer, carnival rides and a chowder cooking competition - for the weekend of Oct It will run from Ghirardelli Square to Pier 39. SFBA Chapter members will develop turkeys to local shelters, ensuring some of the unfortunate will have a healthy Thanksgiving Day dinner. Merry Christmas Veterans Day November 12, 2013 The SFBA Chapter has been invited back to the San Francisco VA Hospital to perform the flag folding ceremony and visit with the veterans who reside at the hospital. 5 Hirshberg Foundation For Pancreatic Cancer Research Lou Gertha Bonner Memorial Fund Lou Gertha Bonner is the mother of CDR Adolph Keyes, USCG Retired. She was born in Sep 37 in Rayne, LA. A spiritual woman, Lou believed in strong family values, good moral character, and achieving a quality education. Lou moved to California in 57 and worked in the Food Services Industry for 30 years. Her struggle with pancreatic cancer was brief, and she died at home with her family at her side in Dec 08. The family encourages you to join in the fight and donate to the research fund in her memory.
