5 Introduction By Professor Geoffrey E Petts, Vice-Chancellor and Rector The University of Westminster is rightly famed for having the largest scholarship scheme for international students of any UK university. In line with our long standing commitments to provide high quality higher education to all regardless of their ability to pay, we have expanded the scheme in recent years to provide equal expenditure on scholarships for UK/EU students. In the past year our emphasis has been to strengthen links with our local communities. To this end we have developed scholarships for academically excellent students progressing to us from our associate colleges. We have linked up with the London boroughs to provide opportunities for young people leaving care. There are a notoriously low number of care leavers who move into higher education, less than one per cent. We hope that by providing scholarships we can do something to improve this for students who have none of the usual support systems. Additionally, we have instituted scholarships for students with major disabilities. The thinking behind this is that these students may find it hard to find well paid jobs at the end of their study and the scholarship will keep their debt level to a minimum. These scholarships are, as far as we know, unique to the University of Westminster. We have now developed a comprehensive scholarship scheme; however, there is always room for expansion and we are constantly seeking new partners to help expand the scheme. We welcome a number of new ones this year and, as always, our thanks go to all our partners new and old, without whose assistance we could not provide the opportunities that we do for students from around 80 countries each year. 7 Recent and future developments This has been a busy year especially with the scholarship scheme for UK/EU undergraduates reaching its maximum extent. The international programme has also grown, if less dramatically. We expect to have over 700 students with scholarships at the University in 2008/09. The value of the scheme will top four million this year. four

10 We have had a number of interesting developments in the last year. We have created new scholarships to fill gaps in the University s provision for example, scholarships for international undergraduates and international students with disabilities. Other developments include: The Challenge, Ghana The British Council organised this reality television show, something like a combination of The Apprentice and Big Brother. The platinum prize was a full scholarship for a Masters programme at Westminster in 2008/09. Applicants to the programme had to hold a first degree with either Upper Second or First Class Honours. Over 3,000 people applied. This was reduced to a final 25, all of whom had applied for a course at Westminster. Only those accepted were eligible for inclusion in the final 12. The programme was shown three times a week for 12 weeks and was watched by about half of the country. The eventual and worthy winner is Jojo Chartei Quansah, who joins the University in September 2008 to read an MA in Marketing Communications. Chevening Scholarships Our portfolio of joint Chevening Scholarships in partnership with the British Council/FCO continues to expand. A new programme with Russia for a student to study the MA in International Journalism will start in Capacity Building Scholarships Our scholarships for the junior faculty of our partner universities abroad has expanded this year to include our first student from the Chinese Communications University in Beijing. In conjunction with the Association of Commonwealth Universities and International Students House, we are developing a range of scholarship options to provide assistance to developing Commonwealth country universities. This will go further than the previous programme which was confined to two courses only. We also developed new scholarships to complement our new relationship with Shobhit University, India. Scholarship for the Philippines To encourage well qualified students from the Philippines to apply to the University we have established a new full scholarship specifically for a student from the Philippines. Care Leavers Scholarship Following separate initiatives from the Mayor of Islington and the University s Counselling and Advice Service, we have established a number of scholarships for children leaving council care. There is a notoriously low participation into higher education from these young people and we hope offering scholarships will encourage more care leavers to participate in university education. The University has been awarded the Frank Buttle Trust Quality Award for this work. Scholarships for China To celebrate the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London in 2012, we have developed a range of scholarships at gold, silver and bronze levels for Chinese students. Metropolitan Housing Partnership To celebrate their longstanding relationship with Jamaica, the MHP in partnership with the University have developed two new scholarships for Jamaicans to study the MA in International Planning and Substantial Development. Latin America After discussions with the embassies of Bolivia, Chile, Guatemala and Panama,we have created a number of new opportunities for students from these countries. We are currently in discussions with Argentina with the aim of providing scholarships for students from that country. Stop Press We have been shortlisted for the 'Times Higher Education Supplement Award' for 'Outstanding Student Financial Support Package.' This is the second time the Scholarships Office has been nominated for a THES award, having won the award for 'Outstanding Support for Overseas Students' in seven

61 FAQs Frequently Asked Questions fifty eight

62 fifty nine

63 What should I write in my statement of support? For those applying for a postgraduate scholarship, Section B of the application form is for you to write a statement (this should be no more than 400 words unless the scholarship for which you are applying states otherwise). This is where you explain why you should be considered for a particular scholarship. You must demonstrate: How you meet the criteria What you expect to gain from the opportunity How you intend to use your experience and knowledge in the future What your long-term goals/plans are. The Scholarships Committee is particularly interested in how you envisage using the knowledge you gain from your course in the development of your community/region/nation (where appropriate). For those UK/EU students applying for an undergraduate scholarship, Section B of the application form is for you to write a statement of not more than 250 words, making a case for what you can bring to the University over and above your academic qualifications and what makes you a suitable scholarship candidate. Who should write my reference letter? The reference letter should be written by a tutor or employer, preferably someone aware of your financial situation (where appropriate). The letter should address: How the referee knows you Why it is felt you deserve a scholarship, including comments on your financial situation Why it is felt you will be an asset to the chosen course of study. Where can I find my reference number? This can be found on your admissions offer letter and will usually be an eight digit number. If you are applying for an undergraduate degree, you can also use your UCAS application number found on all UCAS correspondence. Applicants for PhD scholarships need not fill in this space but should attach proof of acceptance of your proposal. This number must be included on your scholarship application. We will not consider applications that do not include this number. sixty

64 What happens after I have submitted my scholarship application? Once we have received your application, we will acknowledge receipt by . This will also advise you of the date on which you should expect to hear the result of your application. In cases where an application is received very close to the deadline, students will not get an of acknowledgement. As an international postgraduate scholarship applicant, do I have to pay the 2,000 deposit before I know if I have been awarded a scholarship? The University s deposits scheme for postgraduate overseas students means that if you hold an unconditional offer you will be required to make a payment of 2,000 before you are given a student visa support letter, which may be used to apply for your visa for entry to the United Kingdom. As a scholarship applicant, you can wait until you know the outcome of your scholarship application before paying this deposit. It is recommended that you check with the British Embassy how long it takes to process visas during the July/August period. If you are awarded a scholarship that includes a full fee waiver, you will not be required to pay this deposit and the admissions offices will be notified of this. If you are awarded a part fee waiver scholarship (eg a 2,000 or 50 per cent fee waiver) you will still be required to pay this deposit. If you feel that you will come to study at the University regardless of whether or not you are awarded a scholarship, we would encourage you to pay the deposit as soon as possible. If you are later awarded a scholarship that includes a full fee waiver, you will be entitled to a refund of this deposit. Who decides and how will I find out the result? The Scholarships Committee makes decisions on all scholarship applications. The Committee is made up of academic members of staff from across the University s four sites, staff within the International Education Office, Academic Registrar s Department, Counselling and Advice Service and external members. All are very experienced and make the awarding decision based on the criteria for the scholarship and the case you make. Once decisions have been made, the administrator will write to you if you are successful informing you of the outcome. If you are unsuccessful you will be contacted as far as is possible. Please note that the Committee will not undertake or participate in any individual correspondence with you, either before or after the decision has been made. The decision of the Committee is final, and is not open to appeal. Lobbying a committee member will only make you ineligible for a scholarship.
