1 SCHOLARSHIPS AND SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 2004/ UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS For students applying for undergraduate programmes (e.g. BSc, BA, etc) or postgraduate taught courses (e.g. MSc, MA, etc), a number of half tuition fee scholarships are available for 2004/2005. These Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and will be tenable for the duration of the programme of study, subject to good academic progress. All students who are classified as liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate, who hold an offer of admission for a taught programme of study in 2004/2005, will be eligible to apply. Students already registered at the University are not eligible to apply for an International Scholarship, unless they are completing one degree course and beginning another (e.g. completing a bachelor s degree and applying for a Masters). Application forms for a University of Liverpool International Scholarship will be automatically forwarded to all eligible students who hold an offer of a place at the University. Queries regarding the application procedure should be directed to the University's International Recruitment and Relations Office in the first instance, irro@liv.ac.uk. 2. OVERSEAS RESEARCH STUDENT (ORS) AWARDS SCHEME All MPhil/PhD applicants of excellent academic standing are eligible to apply for the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORS). This is a competitive national Scholarship scheme funded by the UK Government that awards the difference between the overseas and UK/EU rate of tuition fees, with the objective of encouraging the very best young researchers to come to the UK for MPhil/PhD study. Up to 24 ORS awards may be available in 2004/2005 at the University of Liverpool. All successful ORS applicants will automatically receive a University of Liverpool International Scholarship to the value of the UK rate of tuition fees ( 2,940 in 2003/2004), plus a further 1,000 towards living expenses. ORS awards and University of Liverpool International Scholarships for research students are tenable for up to three years, subject to good academic progress. Applicants should have been made an offer of a place at the University to read for MPhil/PhD before they apply for an ORS award. A suitable research project must have been agreed with the proposed supervisor before an application is submitted. To receive an ORS application form please contact: Mr M D Stephens Student & Examinations Division The University of Liverpool, Senate House Liverpool L69 3BX. United Kingdom. M.Stephens@liv.ac.uk The closing date for applications is 16 January 2004 irro/scholarships/ /univ of Liverpool general scholarship details/schols doc 1
2 3. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE AWARD One half-tuition fee merit-based award specifically for students offering the International Baccalaureate examinations is available. Applicants should be fully registered at an IB School and taking the IB Diploma. Applicants should have received an offer of a place at Liverpool for 2004 entry. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and will be tenable for the duration of the programme of study, subject to good academic progress. Students must be classified as liable to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate, and hold an offer of admission for an undergraduate programme of study in HSIANG SU COPPIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Hsiang Su Coppin Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 as a result of a generous donation of funds to the University of Liverpool from the estate of the late Mrs Hsiang Su Coppin. Applications can be made from both postgraduate and undergraduate students, and research workers carrying out projects at the University of Liverpool. In order to be eligible to receive support from the Fund, students must be nationals of the People's Republic of China and be ordinarily resident in the People's Republic at the time when the application to attend the University of Liverpool is made. The value and number of awards made from the Fund varies, but it is unlikely that the total value of awards made will exceed 2,500 in any one year. Awards are normally made on the basis of academic merit, although the university reserves the right to target certain ethnic minorities within China, as deemed appropriate within the terms of Mrs Coppin's will. There is no formal application form for funding under this scheme, but eligible students who wish to be considered for support should show initiative and write an open letter of application to Mr M D Stephens at the address given above. The letter should indicate the course the student intends to register for, give details of any other forms of sponsorship, financial circumstances, proof of academic qualifications, transcripts and any other supporting information. 6. UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL GRADUATE ASSOCIATION (HONG KONG) SCHOLARSHIPS This fund was established in 1997 following a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor. The objectives of the Scholarships are to promote educational exchange and academic research respectively, between the University of Liverpool and residents of Hong Kong and the People s Republic of China. A number of scholarships are awarded annually to academically outstanding students on undergraduate or postgraduate courses who have been admitted to full time study. Each scholarship shall be tenable for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The value of the Scholarship will cover either full or part payment of the annual tuition fees. A living allowance may also be awarded if deemed necessary. For further information, please refer to the following web address: irro@liv.ac.uk 7. UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL GRADUATE ASSOCIATION (SINGAPORE) AWARDS Two half-tuition fee merit based awards for students ordinarily resident in Singapore, and eligible to pay tuition fees at the overseas rate. Awardees will be selected by the University of Liverpool Graduate/Alumni Association in Singapore. Application forms will be forwarded to all eligible students in May irro/scholarships/ /univ of Liverpool general scholarship details/schols doc 2
