Individual Scholarships Students Scholarships for African Students of German Studies and German as a Foreign Language Thesis Preparation (Master s or Maîtrise) The programme supports foreign Master students to prepare their thesis at a university in Germany for the duration of one semester. Applicants are eligible to participate if they successfully completed their second or third academic year. Please note that a good knowledge of German is required for participation in this programme. Study Trips / Seminars for Groups of Foreign Students to Germany The program aims at providing students with subject-related knowledge by arranging appropriate visits, tours, and information meetings or by organizing subject-related seminars and practical courses with universities, companies and possibly public institutions. University Summer Course Grants for Foreign Students and Graduates These University Summer Course Grants are provided to support students who attend German language and area studies courses offered by German higher education institutions. Courses last three to four weeks and are offered in the summer months. University Summer Courses are particularly offered to students of German language and literature studies. 1

5 Master s candidates EPOS: Scholarships for Postgraduate Courses with Special Relevance to Developing Countries The scholarship is designed for postgraduate courses to young professionals in leading positions from developing countries with the opportunity to engage in postgraduate education and training in their particular field or profession. The typical scholarship holder will have completed an academic degree far beyond average and at least two years of related professional experience. The duration is months, depending on the particular institution. Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master's Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance) This program is designed for academically qualified future leaders in politics, law, economics, and administration to prepare them in a practical-oriented course for their professional life. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals. Scholarships for students of Music, Architecture and Fine Arts This programme aims to support students with a first degree of the subjects Architecture, Visual Arts, Music, Film Studies, Design or Visual Communication who applied for a postgraduate course in Germany. The funding can last up to 24 months and depends on the length of the course or postgraduate training. 2

Individual Scholarships PhD candidates Research Grants Doctoral Programmes in Germany DAAD research grants provide young foreign academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry out research and continue their education in Germany. There are funding programmes for various qualification phases and stages in a career. The grants also promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. The aim of this grant programme is to support doctoral projects in Germany. Bi-National PhD Programmes Qualified PhD students and young researchers can apply for funds to conduct parts of their research in Germany and work on their doctoral thesis at the home university. The programme provides support for up to two years. Postdocs Leibniz - DAAD Research Fellowships Leibniz DAAD Research Fellowship is a new programme implemented by the Leibniz Association (Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz) and the DAAD. The fellowships offer highly-qualified recent foreign postdocs the opportunity to conduct special research at institutes of the Leibniz-Association in Germany. 3

7 DLR / DAAD-Research-Fellowship Programme DLR DAAD Research Fellowships is a programme implemented by the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR German Aerospace Center) and the DAAD. This special programme is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists. It offers outstanding scientists and researchers the opportunity to conduct special research at the institutes of the DLR in Germany in the fields of aeronautics, space, transportation, and energy. Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (P.R.I.M.E.) This programme was initiated to support the international mobility of postdoctoral researchers by temporary positions at German universities in place of conventional scholarships. Funding is provided for 18 months, in which 12 months have to be spent abroad and 6 months (re-integration phase) at a German university. The re-integration phase is mandatory. The German university administrates the salary during the whole funding period. Staff exchange in Sub-Saharan Africa The purpose of the programme is to promote inter-university co-operation through academic mobility and to enhance the quality of teaching and research at Sub-Saharan African universities. The fellowship is designed as a subsidy to the scholar s current salary / study leave income and applications may come from all subject areas with strong relevance to national or regional development. 4

Individual Scholarships Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists The programme aims to support university teachers and established academics and scientists who have usually completed a doctoral degree and work at a university or research institute in their home country to carry out research and continue their education in Germany. Master s, PhD candidates & Postdocs One Year Grants & Short Term Research Grants DAAD research grants provide foreign doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists with an opportunity to carry out research and continue their education in Germany. There are funding programmes for various qualification phases and stages in a career. The grants also promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues. Alumni DAAD is offering various activities for its Alumni to link between alumni themselves, alumni and their German host institutions and with DAAD and maintain professional & personal ties with Germany. 9 Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holders (WE) The Re-invitation Programme helps the DAAD to maintain contact with its former scholarship holders (DAAD Alumni) who studied in Germany for at least 6 months. DAAD Alumni can apply for a re-invitation to Germany with the purpose of completing a research or work project at a state higher education institution or non- university research institute. The Re-invitation Programme offers research stays in Germany from 1 to 3 months, depending on the applicant's work schedule and cannot be extended. Applications are open to all PhD holders affiliated to Sudanese universities or research institutions. In-Region Scholarship Opportunities Additionally, DAAD offers In-Region scholarships to support postgraduate training in a field with strong relevance to national development. Find out more here: DAAD-NAPRECA Fellowships for Postgraduate Training (MSc and PhD) DAAD-NAPRECA fellowships are for nominees who will pursue postgraduate studies leading to 2 MSc. and 4 Ph.D. degrees in Biology and Chemistry with special bias towards natural products chemistry. The duration is up to 2 years. 6

Institutional Scholarships Academic Cooperation Higher Education Cooperation Programmes DAAD offers a variety of Higher Education Cooperation programmes which mostly focus on development of structure and curricula as well as mobility, internationalization and alumni networking of the universities involved. For the below programmes the German partner university is the leading part in the application process and needs to upload final documents in the DAAD portal ( Therefore, programme descriptions and application processes are mostly available in German language. Capacity Building UNILEAD: University Leadership and Management Training Programme This programme is intended for junior advisors to university top leadership, (deputy) coordinators of central university departments (planning, evaluation, human resources development, budget, continuing education, International offices, technology transfer etc.), task force coordinators for university reform projects, coordinators of staff development units or programmes. Core elements of the course include project management, finance management and human resources management as well as the development of individual reform projects. The course is highly practice-oriented and requires participants to play an active role. DIES-Training Course Management of Internationalisation Leibniz Universität Hannover, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the German Rectors Conference (HRK) are jointly organizing the DIES Training Course Management of Internationalisation. The key objective of the training course is to qualify university staff (either international office staff or higher education managers responsible for coordinating international activities) from selected countries of Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, to manage processes and tasks of internationalisation in higher education. The programme will enable the participants to build up improved and more effective structures of internationalisation at their home universities. 8

Furthermore, the DAAD contributes to the synergy of scientists in Germany and Sudan bringing together experts from academic institutions, researchers and representatives of industry and government. Especially young scientists are promoted and supported through information, exhibitions, scientific events, and networking opportunities. DAAD Lecturer at the University of Khartoum The DAAD has a permanent lectureship at the University of Khartoum, Department of German Language, Faculty of Arts. For inquiries on German as a foreign language and the DAAD activities kindly contact daad.khartum@gmail.com DAAD Alumni Association Sudan (DAAS) The DAAD Alumni Association Sudan (DAAS) was established in 2000 to gather Sudanese scientists to exchange knowledge, experience and participate in the development of a better Sudan. They achieve this by conducting seminars, workshops, and scientific meetings. The DAAD consists of all Sudanese DAAD scholarship holders, as well as alumni of German universities and research institutions. 9

13 V Scholarships for Germans Lectureships The DAAD has a long tradition of sending German educators to Sudan to teach German. The application for a lectureship is jointly filed by the prospective guest lecturer and the host institution, and needs to be submitted online to the DAAD Bonn head office. After a selection process by external experts the DAAD awards the lectureship. There are long-term and shortterm lectureships.
