2 2 of 7 03/03/2016 4:22 PM Research in Germany Information Session, University of Waterloo - February 23rd The DAAD Information Centre Toronto will offer an Information Session at the University of Waterloo on Tuesday, February 23rd from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in the Quantum Nano Centre (QNC), Room This session will present an overview of the German research landscape and information on funding opportunities open to faculty, researchers and postdocs to pursue research activities in Germany or in collaboration with German colleagues. Dr. Alexandra Gerstner, Director of the DAAD Information Centre Toronto, will give this presentation. All are welcome! Research in Germany Information Session, Wilfrid Laurier University - February 24th Dr. Alexandra Gerstner, Director of the DAAD Information Centre Toronto, will be on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University to give an information session on Wednesday, February 24th. This session will run from 11 am to noon and takes place in Room 123 of the Balsillie School of International Affairs (67 Erb Street West, Waterloo). This session will provide an introduction to the German research landscape and a number of funding programs designed to facilitate research activities in Germany or in collaboration with German partners. This event is open to all, but it will be of particular interest to professors, researchers, postdocs and doctoral students.

3 3 of 7 03/03/2016 4:22 PM DAAD-Leibniz Research Fellowships 2016 dlaunched in 2011 by the Leibniz Association (Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the "Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellowship" offers highly-qualified recent foreign postdocs the opportunity to conduct special research at institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany. Applications to this program are being accepted until March 9, For further information on this program, please visit: DAAD Alumni Profile: Dr. Magda Hayton In this space, we will be regularly presenting profiles of the DAAD's Canadian alumni. Information on how to become involved with the DAAD Alumni Association Canada can be found at the foot of this article. Dr. Magda Hayton (DAAD Research Scholar 2003) is an expert on the history of prophetic writing in the Middle Ages witha particular expertise in the political and spiritual influence of the writings of the German visionary St. Hildegard of Bingen. Graduating from the University of Victoria (British Columbia) with distinction in 1998, Dr. Hayton went on to graduate study at the University of Toronto where she undertook her research on the monks and theologians in Western Europe who copied Hildegard's writing and adapted it to their purposes over the course of the 13th and 14th centuries. Her DAAD Doctoral Research Grant gave her the opportunity to carry out her exploration of medieval manuscripts containing collections of Hildegard's prophecies in libraries and archives througout the Federal Republic of Germany. Based on her research within and beyond German libraries, Hayton was awarded the 2015 Leonard Boyle Disseration Prize by the Canadian Society of Medievalists for the best dissertation in Medieval Studies. Currently, Dr.

4 4 of 7 03/03/2016 4:22 PM Hayton is an associate research member of the Centre for Research on Religion at McGill University in Montreal where she is completing a book provisionally titled Inflections of Prophetic Vision: Hildegardian Apocalypticism and Religious Culture. In addition, Dr. Hayton also teaches courses on history, religion and Latin and serves on the board of the DAAD Alumni Association Canada. When asked about the lasting impact of her time in Germany, Dr. Hayton offers, "As someone studying medieval Europe from North America, it can feel as though the people and places one is studying are so distant. When I was in Germany I felt closer to my subject - instead of reading microfilms of medieval manuscripts, I was able to touch and read the books themselves; instead of imagining what it was like where Hildegard lived and wrote, I was able to go to the Rhineland, visit her monastery, and view the valley and hills she herself viewed. It was a powerful experience." **** The DAAD Alumni Association Canada was founded in 1999 with the aim of creating a strong community for DAAD alumni in Canada and strengthening the relationship between CAnada and Germany. Our mission is to: - strengthen ties ties between DAAD alumni, both in Canada and abroad; - promote funding opportunities in Germany and encourage Canadian students and faculty to study and/or conduct research in Germany; - foster personal and academic contact with Germans and German institutions; - promote German culture and language at Canadian schools, colleges and universities. This program helps returning study abroad students put their newfound knowledge and experience to good use. DAAD Young Ambassadors are undergraduate students from North America who have recently studied or interned in Germany and are interested in promoting study in Germany at their home institutions. Each year DAAD recruits approximately students from all over the US and Canada to share with their peers what makes Germany a unique and attractive destination for study abroad.

Additionally, they collaborate with their universities' study abroad offices and other German institutions in their areas to inform their fellow students on educational and research opportunities on offer in Germany. DAAD Young Ambassadors are also available for inquires about their respective German host universities, study abroad programs or student life in Germany.
