2 1. INTRODUCTION Following the successful redevelopment of major parts of the St Marys Community Health Campus it has been suggested that a new naming strategy should be introduced for both the main building and for the peripheral buildings on the site. This paper sets out the proposal to take this forward 2. BACKGROUND 2.1 The Main Building Prior to and during development the main blocks were called Block A and Block B. Previously these buildings were known as Maternity and Paediatrics. Phase one of the redevelopment focused on the ground floor of Block B. This now contains the Outpatients Department, Phlebotomy, Speech and Language Therapy, Pharmacy and Podiatry. Phase two of the redevelopment focussed on Block A (four floors). This now contains, Physiotherapy, Amulree Assessment & Treatment Ward, Community Mental Health, Birthing Unit, Sexual Health Services, Spinnaker Ward and Bournemouth University Midwifery Training The introduction of a new central reception area has effectively created a single building (ie integrating Blocks A&B) The St Marys Community Health Campus User Commissioning Group requested that the main building was named to create a new identity soon after occupation. 2.2 Peripheral Buildings A number of peripheral buildings on the campus are to be refurbished and occupied by new services. For example, the Ella Gordon Unit is now empty (following the relocation of C&SH services into Block A) and will be refurbished for Substance Misuse Services. As the Unit was named after a key figure within Sexual Health Service it would not be appropriate to retain this name. It is therefore proposed that each peripheral building is renamed. 3. PROCESS Initially it was agreed that a Naming Strategy would be developed for the St Marys Community Health Campus site. A small team within the Estates Department then suggested naming themes and these were researched. Following this the team unanimously agreed a theme of pioneering and inspirational nurses This theme has the following advantages / benefits:

3 The information is of historic value and can be presented in a way which the public will find interesting The theme celebrates excellence in healthcare The theme is consistent with the purpose and aim of the St Marys Community Health Campus high quality health care for local people. Sufficient background information was available to provide comprehensive biography for each chosen nurse (including photographs) The research revealed large numbers of inspirational nurses ie sufficient to name each of the buildings and provide choices of names. 4. EXAMPLES OF THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE The following paragraphs provide examples of the biographies which have been collated to date for 7 inspirational nurses.

4 The Louisa McLaughlin Building Louisa McLaughlin Born: 1836 in Nice where her father was the minister of the Church of England Died: 1921 (aged 85) Louisa was one of the first British women to serve as a Nurse for the Red Cross, running field hospitals during the Franco- Prussian War of Pictured opposite wearing the medals awarded by both the French and Germans. Louisa was also one of the first nurses to work for the National Health Society when it was first established in 1869 and in 1877 Louisa together with Emma Pearson invested capital to open one of the first two private nursing homes in London where the two nurses assisted the originator of antiseptic surgery (Joseph Lister) in many operations. Louisa and Emma Pearson Published the book Our Adventures during the War of 1870 and Service in Servia under the Red Cross.

5 The Rebecca Strong Building Born: 23 rd August 1843 in Aldgate, East London, England Died: 1944 (aged 101) Trained at the Nightingale Training School of London s St Thomas Hospital One of the pioneers for Nursing education, placing it in the medical college for the first time. Bringing it under the control of the state and in 1926 was involved in setting up the British College of Nurses. The first Diploma day was held on 29 th April Rebecca was elected as an executive committee member of the General Council of the RBNA in 1909 and made Vice- President of the National Council of Trained Nurses in In 1909 Rebecca formed the Scottish Nurses Association (SNA). In 1938 at the age of 96 she was made an OBE.

6 The Edith Cavell Building Born: 4 th December 1865 in Swardeston, Norfolk, England Died: 12 th October 1915 (aged 49) British Nurse and Spy Edith is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and helping some 200 allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium during World War I. Edith was arrested on 3 rd August 1915, court marshalled and found guilty of treason and sentenced to death by firing squad. Edith is well known for her statement patriotism is not enough Founder of the Belgium nursing journal L infirmiere.

7 The Mary Seacole Building Born: 1805 in Kingston, Jamaica Died: 1881 (aged 76) A pioneering Nurse who travelled to many lands to nurse those affected by Cholera. Mary also tended to the wounded during the Crimean war for which she was awarded three medals. Mary went from obscurity to personal confidante to the royal family and masseuse to the Princess of Wales. Author of the book The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands which was reprinted in 1984

8 The Florence Farmborough Building Born: 15 th April 1887 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England Died: 18 th August 1978 (aged 91) Qualified as a Red Cross Nurse Best known for her role as a Red Cross nurse with the Imperial Russian Army during World War I. In 1974 her 1 st World War diaries were published and Florence was the subject of the documentary series English Nurse with The Tsar s Army. Her book Life and People of Spain was published in Florence was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the British Red Cross.

9 The Dame Cicely Mary Saunders Building Born: 22 nd June 1918 in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England Died: 14 th July 2005 (aged 87) Trained at the Nightingale Training School of London s St Thomas Hospital Best known for her role in the birth of the Hospice movement and emphasizing the importance of Palliative Care in modern medicine. The founder of the world s fist purpose-built Hospice (St Christopher s) established in 1967 Cicely was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in In 1979 Queen Elizabeth II made Cicely Dame Commander of the Order, and then in 1989 Cicely was appointed to the Order of Merit.

10 The Dame Agnes Gwendoline Hunt Building Born: 31 st December 1866 at Boreatton Park, Baschurch, Shropshire, England Died: 24 th July 1948 (aged 81) Trained at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Rhyl Best known as the first Orthopaedic Nurse and one of the pioneers to introduce the diagnostic use of X-rays in Agnes was awarded the insignia of the Red Cross for her contribution in World War I and created Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1926.

11 5. LEGALITIES All legal issues associated with the use of these names have been checked by the Legal and Property Team. No concerns have been raised. 6. IMPLEMENTATION It is proposed that the main building (Blocks A & B) is given a single name which will be chosen by the estates team. The external buildings will be renamed as they become reused / refurbished / occupied by new services. These occupying services will be given the list of names to choose from. 7. SIGNAGE It is proposed a prominent sign will be located outside of each building. This sign will contain the name of the inspirational nurse along with the relevant background information and photograph. In addition the sign will also incorporate details of the service/s in occupation. 8. COSTS The costs for new signage described in this proposal are estimated to be 2, 700 incl VAT 9. CONSULTATION This proposal has been discussed at various forums / groups (including SMCHC Project Team / User Group. Portsmouth Estates Strategy / Estates Rationalisation Group) and has received support at all levels. The proposal will now be shared formally with Solent NHS Trust with recommendation that it is implemented immediately.
