Mallorey s husbad Joe foud her o the floor, uable to move or speak. Determied ad courageous, Mallorey progressed from beig immobile to beig able to move all her limbs, followig two moths of itese rehabilitatio. Oce Mallorey retured home, the Early Supported Discharge (ESD) team from St. Mary s Hospital i Camrose bega workig with her. Livig i rural Alberta, it was difficult for the family to travel daily to the hospital. Uderstadig the limited resources of surroudig commuities, the Camrose ESD team travels up to a hour s radius from the hospital to help their patiets. It was amazig to have people come to my home every day, for eight weeks, says Mallorey. I would have bee scared ad aloe at the hospital, ad this allowed me to have my family aroud me while I was recoverig. Mallorey s goals such as preparig a meal, readig a story to her so, ad learig to exercise agai have bee realized. She cotiues to heal, attedig St. Mary s Hospital for speech therapy oce a week. Lookig forward, she is hopig to drive ad retur to her job. I am thakful for all the love ad support from family ad frieds ad all the doctors ad urses who helped me i my recovery, says Mallorey. 9 MANY VOICES, ONE MISSION This is the toughest jourey I ve ever bee o. GARY FORGET Gary ad Marie have bee married for 29 years. They have always ejoyed travellig to Mexico, spedig the past 22 years explorig the may resorts ad vacatio spots. Te years ago, they fell i love with Ixtapa, which has bee their aual destiatio every year sice. But their travellig days came to a halt whe Marie was diagosed o July 13, 2015 with lug cacer, ad they focused their eergies o Marie s rouds of radiatio ad chemotherapy treatmet that fall. The, the day before Remembrace Day, Marie lost feelig i her arm, ad was admitted to hospital i Calgary, where she was diagosed with brai cacer. Marie moved from the hospital to Dulcia Hospice i Jauary, as the rouds of treatmet eded ad the couple focused o spedig quality time together. Dulcia is a bright ad upliftig place, cosiderig the circumstaces, says Gary. Families are able to share meals together i oe of a few commuity spaces, ad there is a suite available for those wishig to stay close by. The staff ad voluteers offer comfort to residets ad their families durig what is ofte a difficult ad heartbreakig jourey. Marie had a few good moths whe she first arrived at the hospice, but the tumour is ow back, says Gary. It is a slow process ad very tough to watch. She s a fighter. Marie has bee at Dulcia Hospice the logest of ay residet. The couple s two grow childre live i Otario, ad Gary makes the jourey each day from their home i Cochrae. The staff are like family to us ow, ad the voluteers are amazig, says Gary. Beig with Marie here, I have see what the voluteers do. Oce my wife has passed ad I go through my grievig process, I will look ito voluteerig my time here. I have to come back ad see these people, they ve bee through so much with us. From the chaplai, to the medical director, the doctors, RNs, LPNs, RAs, ad voluteers they ve all bee woderful, shares Gary. My wife gets such good care. KIRSTIN HUBERT I March, Kirsti sought a last ditch effort for treatmet at the Grey Nus Commuity Hospital whe the wouds o her feet cotiued to erode due to complicatios from diabetes. After a decade of tryig to maage her coditio, Kirsti s wouds were so advaced that the mother of two struggled every day to live with wouds that would t get better. At the Grey Nus she fially foud the healig she had bee seekig. I am grateful, says Kirsti. It was closer for my family, but I did t realize the level of care I would fid with Marlee Varga, Cliical Nurse Specialist, Ski ad Woud Care. Marlee was at my bedside every day for three moths, sometimes for hours at a time, says Kirsti. This was the first time I did t feel I was to blame. Havig thigs explaied made me feel like I had a part to play i my care ad recovery. Marlee also helped Kirsti create as ormal a life a possible for their family durig the time she was i the hospital. She helped ease Kirsti s axiety by brigig activities for her two school-aged childre to do, makig them comfortable i the cliical settig. Marlee is a miracle worker! I am so glad our paths crossed. It took a log time to figure out what would heal ot oly my wouds, but also my heart. She ever gave up o me. Marlee helped Kirsti receive cousellig through the hospital, recogizig that while she could address her physical wouds, there were deeper issues that also eeded healig. The progressive eurodegeerative disease that causes parts of the brai to die has ow progressed to a poit where it has robbed James of his mobility ad ability to speak. James moved to the complex care uit at the Edmoto Geeral two years ago. Before movig James here, the place he was livig looked great, but he did t receive the level of care that he ow experieces, says Betty, James log-time fried. The facility was t fully equipped to care for a patiet with Hutigto s ad as a result, James physical cotrol lesseed. Sice movig to the Edmoto Geeral, his coditio has stabilized. This is a much better home for him; his care comes first. The dedicated team cotacted the Hutigto Society to access resources ad traiig. His cheerful eergy ad opeess are a testimoy to how far Jerry has come from the dark days of his childhood i care ad a adult jourey shaped by the devastatig impact of violece ad crime. Jerry s life took a uexpected detour three years ago whe he was ivolved i a hit-ad-ru accidet as he was ridig his bicycle. He suffered a broke jaw, cheekboe ad ose ad a brai ijury. He had two hospital stays before he was admitted to Villa Caritas, a acute metal health facility that specializes i carig for seiors with complex metal ad medical health issues. It was a life-chagig experiece. I met three wome, he said. Dr. Harper, Dr. Walker ad social worker Amada who accepted me just the same as everyoe else. Everythig they said to me made sese, like othig ever had before. I saw so much more of myself through these wome. Thak God they pulled me out of it, Jerry says with a laugh. OLGA DUBUC & EILEEN LEFFLER Faith has always bee a itegral part of Mary Homeick s life. At 102, she cotiues to fid deep joy i attedig regular masses ad commuio. Whe Mary fell ad broke her hip, daughters Olga ad Eilee decided it was time to discuss movig her from her seiors residece to a care facility. We told her it was time to start lookig, says Eilee. Her reply was, I ve already looked, I ve doe my research, I m goig to the Mary Immaculate Care Cetre! Mary had lived i the Vegreville area all of her life, but felt that the Mary Immaculate Care Cetre i Mudare offered what she had bee lookig for. Cotiuig care provides a rage of medical ad social services for those who do ot have, or have lost some capacity for self-care ad require assistace i activities of daily livig. KILLAM HEALTH CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT Coveat Health is workig with Alberta Health Services o a $13-millio redevelopmet of the Killam Health Cetre campus of care to be completed i The project icludes ew costructio ad reovatio of the existig log-term care area to create a expaded 50-suite multi-level care cetre.
