A study which looked at more tha 1,000 me ad wome admitted to the hospital with chest pai foud that a ew, more sesitive blood test doubled the diagosis of heart attacks i wome, brigig the proportio of wome diagosed with a heart attack i lie with the diagosis amog me. The research, which was fuded by the British Heart Foudatio ((BHF), discovered that the ew test could look for miute traces of the protei tropoi, which sigals that the heart muscle may have bee damaged. 3 Health lik Sprig 2015 NEWS 3 Materity staff sig up more families for a Healthy Start Efforts by NHS Lothia see 17% rise i pregat mums registered for food vouchers MORE low-icome families across Lothia are ow receivig free food vouchers through a govermet scheme, thaks to a drive by NHS Lothia. Materity staff who have bee workig with families to improve access to the scheme, have see a 17 per cet rise i the umber of pregat mums gettig the Healthy Start vouchers a UKwide iitiative providig food ad vitami vouchers for pregat mums ad families o low icomes. Food vouchers worth 3.10 a week, which ca be used to buy fresh ad froze fruit ad vegetables, milk or ifat formula feed, are available through the scheme for pregat wome ad families with childre up to the age of four. Families with childre aged uder oe ca get two vouchers totallig 6.20 per week. Families also receive vitami vouchers every eight weeks. After fidig that just three quarters of those eligible i Lothia were registered for Healthy Start, midwives made a few simple chages to improve access to this service. Sig-up has sice jumped from 14 per cet to 21 per cet of pregat wome bookig for ateatal care i Lothia, although ot all of these wome are receivig vouchers yet. Dr Graham Mackezie, Cosultat i Public Health, said: Although the Healthy Start programme has bee ruig for may years, we kew that oe i four families i Lothia who were eligible were ot siged up for vouchers. Those that were eligible ofte experieced delays i sigig up or missed vouchers at key poits, icludig whe their baby was bor. We started makig small chages to address some of the barriers that we felt might be stoppig more families accessig the scheme. For example, our midwives started to sig pregat wome up to Healthy Start at their bookig appoitmet istead of waitig util their first sca. Midwife teams also followed up with eligible wome at 16-week ateatal visits to see if they had received their vouchers. We also discovered that may families missed out o valuable fiacial support after their baby was bor because they did t kow that they eeded to call the Healthy Start helplie ( ) ad give them the baby s ame ad date of birth otherwise the vouchers stop. Pregat wome ad families strugglig to complete the applicatio form are offered support from literacy ad paret support workers. Dr Mackezie added: The vouchers ca make a real differece to those facig fiacial hardship. EDINBURGH MUMPS OUTBREAK AT UNIVERSITIES MORE tha 200 cases of mumps have bee detected i Ediburgh sice September last year. The outbreak, which has affected more tha 100 studets, is cotiuig to circulate amog those i the age group. The first cases were foud at Heriott-Watt Uiversity at the begiig of the uiversity term last year. The outbreak has ow bee declared over at the uiversity, but it had see aroud 66 cases. A further 48 cases have bee detected at other uiversities across the city. Dr Lora Willocks, Cosultat i Public Health Medicie, NHS Lothia, said: We ve see 223 cases of mumps i Ediburgh sice the start of the uiversity year i September. Most of these are youg adults, 117 of whom are uiversity studets. The ifectio is still circulatig i the city amog studets ad those i their late tees ad early 20s. Specialist cliics offerig the MMR vacciatio have bee orgaised ad NHS Lothia s Public Health team has provided iformatio posters to uiversities ad has also cotacted all GPs to make them aware of the outbreak. Mumps is a highly cotagious viral ifectio which is most recogisable by the paiful swellig it causes at the side of the face uder the ears. Dr Willocks added: People should look out for headache ad fever, which are the first symptoms of the ifectio, with swellig of the glads o oe or both sides of the face usually developig a day or two later. Those who come dow with mumps are ifectious from about oe week before their symptoms start util up to 10 days after the swellig starts, ad therefore as soo as they otice symptoms they should ot atted work or uiversity ad seek advice from their doctor. The Scottish Natioal Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) Test Service was established to help cut the amout of time it takes to get test results for patiets i Scotlad. Previously, samples were set to the Rare ad Imported Pathoges Laboratory at Porto Dow i Wiltshire, Eglad. The Ediburgh laboratory is equipped to test for viral haemorrhagic fevers, which iclude Ebola, Marburg, Crimea- Cogo haemorrhagic fever ad Lassa fever viruses. Staff provide a roud-the-clock service, ad oce a blood sample arrives, a result ca be kow withi about six hours. Professor Aliso McCallum, Director of Public Health ad Health Policy at NHS Lothia, said: We re delighted to be operatig the first VHF Testig Service of its kid orth of the border to help protect Scotlad from the threat of these viruses, which iclude Ebola.
