2 Evidence-Based Practice: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM AND TARGET AUDIENCE The purpose of this research day is to provide Registered Nurses, graduate students, and student nurses with information regarding specific research findings that contribute to the enhancement of nursing practice and education. Selected scholarly activities conducted in Southeast Louisiana will be explored. Individuals who have an interest in disseminating and incorporating evidence-based findings into their practice are invited to attend. OBJECTIVES At the end of the activity, the participant should be able to: 1. Explore knowledge and research findings that contribute to enhanced nursing practice with selected client populations. 2. Utilize relevant evidence-based research findings to enhance nursing practice, education, and research. 3. Discuss past and present nursing research and scholarly activities conducted in Southeast Louisiana. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Jennifer Robinson, RN, PhD Dr. Jennifer C. Robinson currently holds the position of postdoctoral research fellow in Health Promotion and Risk Reduction Interventions at the University of Michigan School of Nursing through funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research (T32 2-year training grant). During her training, she is focusing on developing her program of research in health disparities, physical activity, and the effect of neighborhood on individual health and health-related behaviors. In addition, she is becoming involved in Detroit, MI with Dr. Kimberlee Gretebeck s physical activity intervention clinical trial to increase activity in older African Americans with type 2 diabetes. Over the past few years, Dr. Robinson has received funding to support her research. In 2004, she was awarded an individual Ruth Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities for two years to complete her dissertation research. Her dissertation was entitled, Physical Activity as a Function of Social Status and Neighborhood Context. She has also received funding under a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development training award to study geographic information systems for population scientists, as well as having been recently selected to attend the 10 th Anniversary Conference of the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research at the NIH campus. She currently has a $10,000 internal University of Michigan pilot grant under review. ENDNOTE SPEAKER Sandra Brown, RN, DNS, APRN, FNP Dr. Sandra C. Brown is a Professor and Coordinator of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is also a research consultant at Woman s Hospital and an Ambassador for the United States Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Health Professional National Service Corps Campus- Based Ambassador Program. Some of her selected research has been in the fields of cardiac assessment, risk evaluation of African American college women, conceptual frameworks in undergraduate nursing curricula of the nation, chest pain and cocaine use in year old persons, and enhancing selfesteem among cardiac patients. Dr. Brown is well published and has presented nationally on these areas of interest.
