2 2018 CSUF/OCDE School Nurse Skills Lab Faculty List Christina Chalmers, MSN, CPNP, CNS University of California Irvine Department of Urology CHOC Children's Hospital Christina graduated with her BSN from Cal State Long Beach and received her dual Pediatric NP/Clinical Nurse Specialist degrees from UCLA in She worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Long Beach for almost 6 years where she had the opportunity to use her passion for teaching to serve as a preceptor to both student nurses and new graduates. She has been working as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at CHOC Children's urology office for the past year. In her free time, Christina is an avid runner and loves to travel. Michelle DeHaven RN, BSN, PHN, NCSN Lead District Nurse Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District mdehaven@pylusd.org Michelle loves being a nurse! She earned her BSN from CSULB in 1988 and has had an expansive nursing career mostly in pediatrics and pediatric ICU. In 2002, Michelle began a career in school nursing and has enjoyed the challenges of managing complicated medical conditions in the school setting ever since. She earned her School Nurse Services Credential and Special Teaching Authorization in Health from CSUF in She has completed the Preliminary Administrative Credential at OCDE and recently passed the National Certification for School Nurses. Since her daughter's diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes in 2003, Michelle has had an increased desire to educate her fellow nurses about diabetes management at school. Barbara Doyer, BSN, MS, RN, PHN, CHSE Faculty Lecturer and Nursing Simulation Center Coordinator CSUF School of Nursing bdoyer@exchange.fullerton.edu Barbara received her BSN at the University of San Francisco and Masters in Science in Healthcare Administration from the University of La Verne. Her background in Nursing Education has been a mix of teaching nursing students at the ADN level, and entry level nursing students here at CSUF. She was also a clinical educator in the service area with both experienced RN's and New Graduates. Her specialties are: Medical Surgical, Critical Care, PACU and OR. She also does legal consulting. Her faculty experience in simulation began at The Center for Medical Simulation. She then continued with Simulation Training at the California State Alliance, CSA, and is on board as faculty to train educators in simulation. She is one of the first to be recognized as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, (CHSE). School Nurse Skills Lab, 2018 Page 2

3 Dr. Kristine Huang Dr. Huang received her Doctor of Optometry degree from SUNY, State College of Optometry, where she also completed a residency in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation. She also holds a Master s Degree in Public Health. Dr. Huang is Associate Professor at the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B Ketchum University. She does didactic and clinical teaching in the Vision Therapy and Pediatric Services, where she also works with residents on cases involving acquired brain injury. Dr. Huang is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association, American Public Health Association, College of Optometrists in Vision Development and Neuro-optometric Rehabilitation Association. She serves as a clinical investigator in several NEI supported studies for the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) and for the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial-Attention and Reading Trial (CITT-ART). Dr. Huang is also a Clinical Director for the Special Olympics Opening Eyes vision screening program. Pamela Kahn, MPH, RN, NCSN Coordinator, Health and Wellness Orange County Department of Education pkahn@ocde.us As the Coordinator for Health and Wellness for the Orange County Department of Education, Pamela acts in an advisory position regarding health programs and health care services to the 28 public school districts and the approximately 300 private schools in Orange County. She works closely with the 200 or so School Nurses in the county as well as many community agencies to provide the 500,000 students in the county with the health services that they need in order to be successful in school. She has presented at State and National Conferences, and has taught at local community colleges and universities. She has held many Board positions for various professional organizations and county agencies. She has been published in Nursing World magazine, Congenital Cardiology Today, The Journal of School Nursing and has authored a chapter in the 2 nd edition of School Nursing; A Comprehensive Text and in the recently released Legal Nursing for School Health Services. She has also written a regular column on School Health for the OC Register. Danielle Knox BSN, RN Credentialed School Nurse dknoxstar@gmail.com Danielle attended San Bernardino Valley Community College and received her Associates degree while working full time for Loma Linda University Medical Center as well as being a full time nursing student, mom, wife, and president of her nursing class. Her BSN was obtained via Western Governors University while receiving her training on the Pediatric ICU floor at Loma Linda Children's hospital. Danielle has had the opportunity to experience nursing in multiple specialties including Correctional nursing, Hemodialysis, and school nursing which she has done for the last 3 years and received her school nurse credential from Cal State Fullerton. Her full time position is with San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools which focuses solely on Special Education students and she continues to work part-time in the Hemodialysis clinic. 4 Karen Manning, MSN, CPNP-PC, RN-BC, NCSN Nurse on Special Assignment (NOSA), Newport Mesa USD Karen is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist and Nationally Certified School Nurse. Originally from the East Coast, Karen completed her BSN at West Virginia University, and her MSN [Clinical Nurse Specialist Pediatrics] and her Post Master s Certificate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the University of Virginia. In addition she completed a certificate in Medical Health Care Ethics from the University of Washington, and a certificate as a Legal Nurse Consultant from UC San Diego Extension. She previously taught as a clinical instructor at West Virginia University, then joined the Pediatric Cardiology UC San Diego, and subsequently the Pediatric Cardiology Team at UC Irvine. Karen has 17 years combined experience in Pediatric Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery. In addition she also practiced as a PNP with Navy contract clinics providing general well & episodic pediatric care. Karen s current practice is at Newport Mesa USD as a Nurse on Special Assignment, after 12 years as a school nurse. She currently functions as the EHR resource nurse, data coordinator, program development, education & training. In the past she has functioned as an elementary school nurse, school readiness nurse. In 2010 she was honored as the School Readiness Nurse of the Year by Orange County School Nurse Organization. She is currently pursuing her DNP at the University of Arizona, College of Nursing (On-line) and plans to complete her studies in Rachel McClanahan, DNP, RN, NCSN Assistant Professor; Lead, School Nurse Concentration, Cal State Fullerton rmcclanahan@fullerton.edu Rachel McClanahan is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and the Coordinator of the School Nurse Credential Program at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) where she instructs and mentors school nurses working on their School Nurse Credential, MSN, and DNP degrees. Rachel is a Nationally Certified School Nurse with more than 23 years of varied professional experience. After many years in the hospital adult medical-surgical setting, and before joining the University faculty, Rachel spent 10 years as the Coordinator of Health and Nursing Services/School Nurse for the Oxnard School District in Oxnard, California. Janna L. Moore, MPA Executive Director, Epilepsy Support Network of Orange County jmoore@esnoc.org Janna received her BA in Administration of Justice at Portland State University in Portland Oregon in 1985, and earned a Master s Degree in Public Administration in 1988 from CSU Long Beach. In 1998 her 3 ½ year old daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy. Janna began volunteering for the Epilepsy Foundation of Los Angeles, as there was no local epilepsy organization in Orange County. Shortly, thereafter she joined the Foundation as a staff member to provide services for individuals with epilepsy in Orange County. In April of 2005, Janna was awarded the Women who Make a Difference in Orange County Award. In June of the same year, she was awarded the Professional Achievement award from the Regional Center of Orange County for her service to people with disabilities in Orange County. Currently, Janna works for the Epilepsy Support Network of Orange County, a 501 c3 non- profit organization which she and several parents co-founded. The Epilepsy Support Network is dedicated to building a community of support for individuals affected by epilepsy in Orange County. As Executive Director, Janna s vision is to educate our entire community about epilepsy, changing perceptions and beliefs in order to support best case outcomes for individuals diagnosed with epilepsy. Janna has 17 years experience working in the field of epilepsy as well as raising a daughter with the condition. School Nurse Skills Lab, 2018 Page 4

5 Ashley Nickell, OD Ashley received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Holy Names University. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University, where she is also currently completing a residency in pediatric optometry and vision therapy. She is currently a member of the American Academy of Optometry, American Optometric Association and College of Optometrists in Vision Development. After completion of her residency program this summer, she plans to continue her specialty care of pediatrics and vision therapy in a private practice setting. Patti Nitzel, RN, BSN, PHN Patti started her career as a postpartum/newborn nurse in 1986 at Martin Luther Hospital in Anaheim. She received her BSN at CSUF in In 1991, she started her career in the NICU at Torrance Memorial where she stayed until she decided to try school nursing in In 2009 she completed her School Nurse Services Credential at CSUF. Although she loved her career as an NICU nurse, she also loves being a school nurse and helping children and families in the PYLUSD! Melissa Perez, RN, BSN, PHN, CPN Harbor Day School Nurse mperez@haroborday.org Melissa graduated from Cal State University Long Beach with a Bachelor s degree in nursing. She is a Certified Public Health Nurse and a Certified Pediatric Nurse. Her nursing experience of 12 years began at CHOC Children's Hospital, working the Medical/Surgical unit. Melissa has been very fortunate to work with physicians of many specialties to enhance her knowledge of nursing. She has worked closely with CHOC's RN Residency Program providing hands on training and lecturing to new nurses. Melissa has been the school nurse for Harbor Day School over the last 5 years. She teaches sexual education to 8th grade as part of her role and really enjoys it. School nursing has provided Melissa with different aspect of nursing away from the bedside.
