2 Call for Abstracts The Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine (CSHM) Annual Conference will once again include a scientific session, featuring Abstracts and Posters. We are pleased to invite all individuals and organizations involved in Hospital Medicine in Canada and internationally, to submit their projects and research activities for publication in the Annual Conference Proceedings. Abstracts will be chosen by a panel of experts from the CSHM Research Committee on the basis of originality and scientific excellence. We are inviting submissions in two categories: 1. Quality and Safety in Hospital Medicine 2. Hospitalist Model / Inpatient Care Innovations We would like to encourage hospital-based practitioners to submit their improvement projects to the conference. Submissions should highlight the work of hospitalists and other inpatient care physicians and health practitioners in the design and implementation of quality and safety improvement projects that form part of Inter-disciplinary improvement teams. We also welcome submissions that study the various ways in which Hospital Medicine programs impact the delivery of healthcare in acute care settings. 6 *Activity subject to change Pre-Courses - Thursday, September 24, MOC Section 1 Transitions of Care and Physician Roles in Quality Improvement Moderator: Christine Soong, MD, MSc, CCFP 08:30 16:30 This full-day interactive pre-course will expose participants to key concepts in patient safety and quality improvement (QI) with a focus on Transitions of Care (in the morning) and Physician Roles in QI (in the afternoon). This pre-course has been collaboratively developed with the Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine Quality Improvement Committee, the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) and McMaster University. Objectives for this pre-course include: 1. Using realistic examples, recognize and manage high risk situations that arise during transitions of care in an acute care inpatient setting 2. Develop methods to effectively communicate and document transitions of care to patients, families and other healthcare practitioners 3. Appreciate successes and challenges when participating in quality improvement (QI) projects 4. Recognize the role of hospitalists and hospital-based physicians in leading QI projects 5. Be able to elicit the patient s previous advance care planning and incorporate it from admission, to inpatient decision-making, to post discharge care 3. 7 *Activity subject to change 3.75 MOC Section 3 Introduction to Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) for Inpatient Care Moderator: Khalid Azzam, MBBS, FACP, CPE Part 1: 08:00 12:00 (Limit: 20 participants) Introduction to PoCUS Part 1-08:00 12:00 Agenda This hands-on interactive Part 1 workshop will introduce participants, with little previous knowledge or skills in ultrasound techniques, to the basics of using bedside ultrasound for diagnostic purposes on the general medical ward. By attending this morning s session, participants will: 1. Learn the basics of ultrasound technology, indications for use, and overview of common clinical protocols (e.g. FAST, BLUE and FOCUS) 2. Appreciate how PoCUS can assist in answering focused clinical questions and augment physical examination and bedside clinical care 3. 8 3.75 MOC Section 3 Part 2: 13:00 17:00 (Limit: 20 participants) Part 2 of this workshop will be of interest to participants who have attended Part 1 (above) or individuals with previous experience in PoCUS in an inpatient setting. Also, in a hands-on format, participants will work with instructors and simulation to: 1. Practice the focused cardiac examination (FOCUS) 2. Use PoCUS to diagnose pulmonary conditions such as pneumothorax, pneumonia and pulmonary edema 3. Apply ultrasound guidance to procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis and lumbar puncture NOTE: Maximum registration for each of Part 1 and Part 2 will be twenty (20) participants. This course is not a certificate course and though it may assist participants in obtaining hospital privileges for ultrasound-guided procedures, awarding of privileges is a hospital regulatory function and individual hospital policies will vary. 9 Post-Course - Sunday, September 27, MOC Section 1 Wound Care Basics Moderator: Stephan Landis, MD, FRCPC 08:30 11:30 This half-day hands-on interactive workshop will expose participants to the general concepts of wound assessment and management. It will focus on common presentations seen in acute inpatient care. Extensive opportunity will be provided for asking questions, discussing and handling common types of wound dressings. Participants will be able to: 2.5 MOC Section 1 1. Identify and control (as best as possible) underlying causes that lead to development of wounds 2. Support patient centered concerns 3. Optimize local wound care through review of best evidence recommendations for effective practice in diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers, preparing the wound bed and the principles of wound healing CSHM Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine Workshop Moderator: Marcel Dore, MD, FHM 09:00 11:30 This workshop will focus on the presentation of the newly developed Canadian Society of Hospital Medicine Core Competencies. Participants will be able to experience and discuss the use of the CSHM Core Competencies in their own environments. Examples will be provided on how the CSHM Core Competencies can be used for education, human resource planning, evaluation and establishment of standards of hospital medicine practice. 9

Written by an award winning author and writer, this book explores the evolution of aging, frailty and the end of life experience in the context of what modern medicine can and cannot do. He puts forth ideas on how we can do better. Hosted by the Royal Columbian Hospital and Area Physicians Advocating Wellness Group, all are welcome. We request registration as space is limited.
