3 INVITATION IFHE PRESIDENT SIDIGA WASHI ( ) Dear IFHE Members, On behalf of the IFHE Executive, I am pleased to invite you to the IFHE 2018 Council and Symposium, which will take place at Ahfad University for Women on 25 th February 1 st March, 2018 in Khartoum, capital city of Sudan. The IFHE Council, which is the highest governing body of IFHE, will be an opportunity to discuss many important issues for the Sidiga WASHI future of the organisation since the last one in Daejeon. IFHE President Your presence will ensure your commitment to the advancement of our Home Economics Federation in a changing world. Beside IFHE Strategies of the Programme s and Working groups for the future important topics for example will be the introduction of a new IFHE Executive Director, the election of the IFHE President-Elect as well as the new IFHE Treasurer and most of all the planning processes of topics and activities at the IFHE World Congress The Symposium under the theme Never too late for elderly well-being: a Home Economics Perspective will bring together IFHE Members and fellow Home Economists from all over the world and national representatives from related fields to explore and discuss opportunities and strengths related to our field in order to improve the quality of life for elderly in our societies. More specifically, it will look at potential solutions along the way for offering our elders a quality life to enjoy. The Symposium will also identify how our profession, and in particular the various areas of studies, can be best supported to meet the challenge of meeting demands in ways which also deliver on social and environmental needs of our elderly to enjoy their old age. The Symposium results will be taken forward to shape the further work of our different program committees and will inform future policy and research debates, including the work on those relevant sustainable development goals. High-level international experts working on gerontology will open the symposium as keynote speakers. An important aim of this Council and Symposium is to offer networking opportunities and foster debate among up to 200 participants from all over the world. We very much hope that you are interested to participate. Through your participation, you can help developing issues to be explored further by the IFHE, and be fed into to the elderly policy debate. 4 WELCOME MESSAGE AHFAD UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN (AUW), KHARTOUM, SUDAN Welcome to Khartoum, Sudan and to Ahfad University for Women for IFHE Council 2018 and Symposium. As the Chairperson of the IFHE Council 2018 and Symposium Organising, it is an honour to invite you to the 2018 Council and Symposium, which will take place at our friendly campus at Ahfad University for Women from 25 th February 1 st March, 2018 in Omdurman, National capital city of Sudan. The IFHE 2018 Council is organising a wide range of sessions focusing on the role of IFHE to advance the Home Economics field to ensure better quality of life for individuals and communities now and in the future. Manal ABDEEN The Symposium which will be held under the theme of Never too late for elderly well-being: a Home Economics Perspective will comprise: 1. Insights into different Home Economists perspectives. 2. Expert views on the challenges for elderly to have a quality life. 3. An update on the work of various Home Economists on elderly. 4. Expert presentations on the potential responses and opportunities to changing global views and resource scarcity, on families and public best practices to care of elderly, research potentials and ways to meet elderly societal needs. The Council and Symposium aim to provide opportunities through practice, research, and professional sharing that lead to improving the quality of everyday life for individuals, families, and households worldwide and specifically for our elderly. In addition, the IFHE focuses on promoting the recognition of Home Economics in the everyday lives of individuals and families. With its efforts, the IFHE holds the IFHE Council every two years and approximately 200 Home Economics professionals, including IFHE Members, are expected to participate in the Council and Symposium. We believe the Council and Symposium will be a highly rewarding networking and educational experience for all participants. Furthermore, the Organising will offer the most enjoyable and exciting opportunities for all participants as we plan an array of social programs filled with the unique and fascinating culture and history of Afro-Arab Sudan. 5 INFORMATION AT A GLANCE Venue The IFHE Council 2018 will be held at the Ahfad University for Women, Khartoum, Sudan. The Ahfad University for Women (AUW) was established in1966 with the aim to train and equip women to become active change agents in the development of Sudan. AUW is a pioneer higher education institution in Sudan whose philosophy is women s education, development and empowerment. Its history goes back to 1907 when the first school for girls was established in Sudan. Currently AUW has 6,533 students from all parts of Sudan, neighbouring countries and from all around the world. Students are enrolled in one of seven schools, which are organised along practical professional lines, rather than the traditional academic fields. Address Ahfad University for Women (AUW) P.O. 6 IFHE Council 2018 Organising Chair: Dr Manal ABDEEN and an Organising of ten Faculty member plus a scientific committee of five persons committee for the one-day symposium. Registration for the Council and Symposium will be opened on the IFHE Website in October 2017 under Meals during the Council and Symposium are available at no cost. Information on submitting abstracts is as follow: Those willing to participate in the symposium are expected to submit Abstract/s not later than 15 th September, Abstracts should be in Microsoft Word (not in pdf format) Times New Roman size 12 and not more than 300 words, abstracts should include: Objectives, Methodology, Results, Conclusions and or Recommendations. Abstracts must be submitted to shs.she@auw.edu.sd Abstract should address one or more of the sub-themes of the Symposium. More details on the symposium matters will follow on website: and will be found on IFHE s Website in the 2 nd week of July The closing date for submission of symposium abstracts is 15 th September

9 SYMPOSIUM The Symposium will be hosted by the Ahfad University for Women in co-operation with IFHE. Theme: Never Too Late for Elderly Well-being: a Home Economics Perspective Sub Themes: 1. Sustainable Healthy Lifestyle for Elderly a. Elderly friendly cities and towns. From a Home Economics perspective, there are many aspects, which should be considered to develop: age-friendly surroundings and infrastructures: age friendly super-markets, transportation, information points and related services. b. The role of governments, civil society and individuals to ensure healthy life for elderly. c. Demographic changes changes for families and communities affects the quality of life of elderly. d. Elderly Health and nutrition. e. Elderly Housing and care homes. f. Psychological effects of neglect and social exclusion (exercises and social inclusion for elderly to promote health and prevent dementia). g. Quality and suitable textiles for elderly. 2. Ethics, Rights, Policies and Laws for Elderly Well-being (UN and especially The WHO policies for elderly). 3. Understanding the Elderly Needs in normal Life and during Emergencies. 4. Cancellation and No Show Policy Please note that all reservations must be guaranteed by L.P.O or Cash. If there is a cancellation within 24 hours of intended arrival or if the reserved room is not occupied (no show), the Hotels reserve the right to charge 100% of the amount due to them for the first night s stay. D. Early Check-In Policy Requests for early check-in are subject to room availability. For guaranteed early check from 00:00 to 05:00, 100% of room charges will be applied and from 05:00 to 10:00 50% of room charges will be applied (based on the confirmed rate). 14 CITY OF KHARTOUM n (Sources: City of Khartoum Khartoum is perhaps best known as the mythical location where the two great strands of the River Nile combine before heading northwards into the ancient lands of Nubia and Egypt. The city straddles the banks of this famous water way, and even pokes out into the famous confluence at the headland known as Al-Mogran (Joining point). In the heart of the town, strips like Nile Street (which unsurprisingly run alongside the Blue Nile) are packed with pretty buildings of arabesque design. This is also where you will see the grandiose Presidential Palace, protected religiously by zealous guards. Nearby is the hustle and bustle of Souq Arabi the more frenetic and mercantile hub of the capital. However, where Khartoum comes crowned with old palaces and blue-domed mosques, Omdurman is peppered with throbbing souqs and bazaars. The most impressive of these is surely the eponymous Souq Omdurman, which is said to be the single largest market in all of Africa! The house of the old Khalifa is also located here, and makes a perfect stop for those interested in unravelling tales of Sudan s colonial relations with the United Kingdom. Be sure not to miss the shows of Twirling Dervishes that erupt here each Friday! 14
