5 CAF Family Research Team Conduct social scientific research and analysis related to factors affecting the well-being and quality of life of CAF members and their families by informing policies, programs and services. 4
6 Military Community Wellness Aim: Measure the wellness of military communities on various CAF bases to ensure families have the assistance required to deal with the unique challenges of the military lifestyle. Pilot Survey: Development of an effective series of indices to measure the wellness of the military communities at CAF bases. Measures: Community wellness measured along seven dimensions: material well-being, health, productivity, intimacy, safety, community, and emotional wellness. 9 SSRRB Review Ethical Considerations Tri-Council Policy Statement establishes the principles to guide the design, ethical conduct and ethics review process for research involving humans Technical Considerations To ensure only high quality research is conducted with DND employees, CAF members and their families as well as CAF applicants and Cadets, which will result in reliable, accurate and valid findings Must adhere to accepted professional practices in the development of a scientifically robust research project All instruments / instructions must be clear and concise in order to provide usable and reliable data 8
10 Additional Requirements - POR and DHRIM Consideration of Public Opinion Research Significant Large N Sensitive Issues or Target Population Contracted Requires MND approval Access to DHRIM Information Application of the Access to Information Act and Privacy Acts Currently have blanket approval for POR research only 9
11 TOR and SSRRB Composition Chair is the DGMPRA Chief Scientist Five voting members and five alternates One scientist from outside DND Command Personnel Selection Officers Researcher on the hot seat 10
12 Sponsorship and Access to Participants Level 1 Sponsorship Provides Functional authority with oversight of activities for which he/she is responsible Already in place for DGMPRA research Approval to Access Participants Typically granted by CPSOs Access to participants for timings Must be in place prior to scheduling for review SSRRB Coordinator will assist with this 11
13 SSRRB Response Approval - If no concerns with the research, or only minor concerns, an approval will be provided within three working days SSRRB Observations - If the Board has concerns you will receive a response within three working days outlining their observations Two types of observations: directions are mandatory changes recommendations provided to assist the researcher in improving the overall quality of the research proposal or research instruments 12
14 SSRRB Exemptions Exemptions from full SSRRB Review: Re-administration of previously approved research, where there are no changes to the questions Your-Say Surveys Unit Morale/Climate Profiles Human Dimensions of Operations MFRC CNAs However. research deemed exempt from full SSRRB review still needs to be Coordinated This requirement is in place for awareness and tracking purposes which are aimed at reducing survey fatigue. 13
15 Preparing for SSRRB Review Normal Procedures Contact SSRRB Scy (SSRRB positional mailbox) for applicable forms, templates, information regarding the process Read the SSRRB SOP and Guidelines Understand the application of policies Understand who else is working with the same participants Enlist the support of team members who have experience preparing SSRRB submissions Prepare forms and finalise any supporting documents relevant to the research (surveys, consent forms etc) and submit to SSRRB Coord. 14
