From the Editor Thank you for picking up this issue of The Times, a newsletter designed with employees in mind to keep you informed about the great things happening at Florida Hospital. There s a lot going on, and we don t want you to miss a thing. Always remember -- this is your newsletter. So, if you have ideas for stories or features you think other Florida Hospital employees would enjoy, we d love to hear from you! You can send your feedback to Stephanie.Wright@FLHosp.org. Thanks for reading! United Way Campaign is One for the Record Books The numbers are in, and Florida Hospital employees have once again revealed their generous side by contributing $430,671 to the 2014 Florida Hospital United Way Campaign the largest amount ever donated in the history of our campaign. In addition, the hospital made a corporate gift of $35,000, bringing the total to $465,671. Congratulations to the Courtland campus, which had the highest participation rate among all locations for the second year in a row, but not without some stiff competition from the Maitland and Altamonte campuses, which finished second and third respectively. Courtland will maintain the large traveling trophy cup, awarded each year to the campus with the highest participation rate. A special thanks to those employees who helped make this year s campaign a success. Your gifts continue to demonstrate your continued commitment to our culture of service and the importance of giving back to our community. PAUSE PEACE for Knots By Todd Chobotar Mission and Ministry In our home, horizontal blinds cover the windows. Pulling the three cords on the right of the window raises the blinds. In truth, we rarely use these cords. Yet somehow, every few weeks, a hug knot mysteriously develops about six inches from the end of the cords. Not a neat little knot, but a big, tangled, messy ball of a knot. It takes quite awhile to untangle it. Then, several weeks later, it s back. So where did it come from? While pondering the meaning of this mystery, a thought struck me. Sometimes my life feels a lot like those cords. I often get twisted into knots of stress, tangled in emotions of doubt, or snarled in sour situations that I don t know how I got into. Like these knots in my blinds. I m incapable of untangling myself. I need outside help. In truly troubling times, there is only one person who can untwist, untangle and unsnarl me, God. There are some things that people cannot do, but God can do anything. (Matthew 19:26 CEV) He can loosen my anxieties, unjumble my emotions, and straighten out my life. If you know a good detective who can solve The Confounding Case of the Naughty Knotty Knots, please let me know. In the meantime, let s you and I place our knotted lives in the hands of a skilled Savior who specializes in untangling tangled up lives. 2 THE TIMES

Lasting Impression By Dallas Sachse The Florida Hospital Compassion Behaviors teach us the importance of introducing yourself and smiling, actively listening, projecting a positive image and energy, anticipating needs and going above and beyond, and being a team player. These behaviors are emphasized throughout multiple system-wide trainings, as well as when new employees attend orientation. It is one thing to educate about their importance, but they take on new meaning when we see the impact they make with real patient and family experiences. The Patient Experience Department hears the voices of patients and families on a daily basis, in s, letters and survey comments. We recently received a letter from a patient who stayed at our Celebration campus. She not only returned her completed patient satisfaction survey, but went beyond that and personally wrote a letter to the administration regarding her experience, which follows: Dear Administrator, I would like to take this opportunity to express my feelings on my recent admission to Florida Hospital in Celebration. Your staff and doctors were absolutely incredible! I am a health care professional and work in a hospital that is part of a large health care system; therefore, I do know the ins and outs of health care and hospital admissions. Your team goes above and beyond to guarantee the comfort, safety and complete understanding of the treatments provided to your patients. I would like to thank each and every staff and team member who provided me with excellent care. I wish I could remember all of the names of the people involved in my treatment, but unfortunately, that is not possible. Everyone involved in my care provided me with extraordinary care. This includes everyone from admissions, the ER, nurses, doctors, patient care techs, lab techs, radiology techs, housekeeping and food services. Your administration should be very proud of the exceptional team you have working in your facility. With Regards, Georgia When the voices of our patients are expressed in letters like this one, it confirms that our team members are the extraordinary world-class staff that we hope them to be. The patient not only raves about how many different team members positively impacted her experience, but literally references a Compassion Behavior going above and beyond. It is clear that by following the Compassion Behaviors, Celebration team members were able to positively influence this patient s experience and leave a lasting impression. THE TIMES 3

Caring for the East Orlando Community By Albalis Santiago Oliveras Cuidate Community Program Manager Each year, Florida Hospital East Orlando provides care for more than a third of its community. In caring for these patients, the staff encounters many who are uninsured. Our mission calls us to extend Christ s healing ministry in all we do, and not one person is refused care. With the help of programs like Cuidate (Take Care), we are able to help those who do not know where to go for help to manage their illnesses. They often cannot afford medications and desperately need access to primary and secondary services. Last year, this program assisted more than 7,000 of the uninsured patients who came through the Emergency Department. The Cuídate/Take Care Program is an initiative developed at East Orlando to provide health education and promote chronic disease self-management techniques. This initiative was created in response to the large number of people in East Orlando with no health insurance and a significant history of illness, especially heart disease and diabetes. The program also connects uninsured individuals with community clinics for primary care services, affordable medications, prescription-assistance programs, specialty services and other health care resources. During their stay, patients receive assistance and access to primary care services and affordable medications and are connected with specialty services. In addition, 524 people from our community successfully completed the Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-management Workshop. By fulfilling our mission, no patient is turned away for care. Cuídate/Take Care helps individuals learn to take better care of themselves by providing free training on chronic disease and diabetes self-management, including heart disease, lung disease, arthritis and other illnesses that persist over time. Our staff and volunteers have been trained by Stanford University to deliver the six-week self-management training either in English or Spanish. FHEO is blessed to be part of a program that helps so many individuals access the care they need to continue healing and attain better health. Since the beginning, the Cuidate/Take Care Program has made a difference in countless lives in the East Orlando community, and it s very rewarding to know that we are carrying out Christ s example each day by connecting our uninsured patients with the support they need. 6 For Whom the Bell Tolls Janina Ozim, middle, is joined by Imaging Director Ann Hester and Winter Park Administrator Ken Bradley during the Cancer Institute s celebration. Janina Ozim has a new perspective on a woman s journey with breast cancer. COVER STORY In the lobby of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, there is a brass bell on the wall that has a special significance for its patients. The ringing of the bell is a tradition that symbolizes not only the completion of a cancer patient s treatment, but his/ her renewed hope for the future. During a recent event to mark the Cancer Institute s renovation, the ceremonial bell- ringing tradition continued, with one of Winter Park s own employees performing the honor in celebration of her own personal victory with the disease. Janina Ozim, an ultrasound technologist, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of She says her experience not only gave her a newfound appreciation for what breast cancer patients go through, but also served to redefine the word family. Any cancer patient understands the importance of having a team of people to encourage them during their journey. In addition to her own family, many of Ozim s faithful supporters came from her Winter Park family: from the administrators and her work colleagues, to employees she had never met, who would come up to her and let her know they were praying for her. When you have cancer, the Cancer Institute becomes your new home, said Ozim. Besides the physical side effects, you experience so many emotions -- from anger to the fear of what s next. It you don t have people around you who can stick by you, it s very tough. Ozim explains that her co-workers didn t waste any time in reminding her that they were going to be there for her. She soon became the recipient of many spontaneous acts of kindness. Co-workers adjusted their schedules so they could pick her up and take her to and from her treatments, and one night when she returned home totally exhausted from the day s events, she was greeted by a sea of pink flamingos covering every corner of her yard, as if to smile at her and remind her that everything was going to be alright. I never knew what to expect, Ozim said. Even though this was my problem, from the very beginning, I was reassured by my colleagues I was not alone and that we were going to go through this together. Today, Ozim is cancer free. She admits that having cancer has changed her for the better. She celebrates each day of life and now more than ever appreciates the love of her Winter Park family. 6 THE TIMES

Florida Hospital Innovation Lab Partners with GE Healthcare Florida Hospital s Innovation Lab (FHIL) has had many success stories since it opened its doors more than three years ago. Nearly 300 internal teams have used the lab to come up with innovative solutions to their problems using the Design Thinking approach to problem solving. But recently, the FHIL celebrated a new milestone when GE Healthcare became the first company to sign up for a million-dollar collaboration to work with the FHIL over the next three years to find mutually beneficial solutions to problems they believe will impact health care worldwide. We knew we wanted to involve external companies when we launched FHIL, but we thought it would take at least five years, said FHIL Cofounder Karen Tilstra. We re thrilled to be here at the three-year mark. Top executives from GE became acquainted with the lab at Florida Hospital in the spring of 2013, when Florida Hospital s Chief Strategy Officer David Banks introduced the idea of a joint innovation project when they expressed their desire to improve the quality of women s breast care. The company participated in a two-day innovation session to discover ways they could improve the delivery time of a women s diagnosis with breast cancer and shorten the entire breast care process. GE executives went back to their world headquarters armed with viable solutions that opened the way for revolutionary changes for breast care for women. We ve done a lot of work with GE over the years, said Banks. What s different about this partnership is that we re working together to create a new type of working relationship that focuses on delivering value to patients and aligns our vision with GE s to make a positive impact in health care for people. During their most recent trip to the FHIL, GE executives continued to be impressed with how they could come together and develop ideas in the lab and then test those outcomes right down the hall in real-life situations with patients. Banks believes that the Innovation Lab experience provides a seamless and transparent way to leverage the collective strength of both companies to identity what s in the best interest of the end user the patient and identify what the real issues are. The end product will result in improved processes that lead to a better patient experience. 10 THE TIMES

Tis the Seasoning of the Heart By Sherri Flynt, MPH, RDN/LD Manager of the Center for Nutritional Excellence Every February, we are reminded why it s so important to live heart-healthy. Heart disease continues to be the number-one killer of adults, the leading cause of disability and costs Americans more than $300 billion each year. While there are a number of risk factors for heart disease, one thing we can do is season our food differently. Using herbs and spices, instead of fat and salt, is a tasty way to add excitement to your dishes and eat heart-healthy at the same time. Here are some tips to get you started: Basil. Basil goes well with tomato sauce, pastas, soups and chicken dishes. Fresh basil is best added right before serving. Dried basil should be added 15 minutes before cooking is done. Cilantro. This spice fits nicely with beans, tomatoes, avocados and rice. Do not cook fresh cilantro, just add before serving. Oregano. Oregano is great in Greek dishes when combined with mint and lemon. Add to potatoes, mushrooms, eggs and beef. Cumin. This is a great addition to Mexican and Indian dishes and on fish, such as tilapia. Smoked paprika. This seasoning adds smokiness without extra fat or salt. Use as a rub for meats or tofu, and in fruit salsas. Herbs and spices typically last for one year, but some may last even longer. It s best to store in a dark, cool, dry place (not by the dishwasher or over the stove). Air-tight containers are also best for storage. How do you know when it s time to replace your seasonings? Take a whiff. If they don t smell like the day they were purchased, it s time to replace them. Also, fresh herbs are not as potent as dried herbs. If your recipe calls for fresh, but you only have dried on hand, use one-third of the amount called for. Black Bean Spread 1 cup black beans (drained and rinsed) 2 tablespoons water 3 tablespoons yellow onion, chopped 1 ½ teaspoons of fresh garlic, chopped 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon chili powder 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin Pinch of ground bay leaf DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth (no chunks).
