In 2009 I began an uncertain search for a career outside of acute care at the hospital. I was then hired to work at a busy industrial plant. I gained both interest and experience in this role. I changed positions to a new company in 2012 and now work in my own clinic covering two manufacturing sites. Occupational Health Nursing is a unique specialty, one that even many nurses know little about. I wish to promote our specialty in addition to gaining further experience and knowledge within the occupational health realm. Furthermore, I would like to help facilitate the sourcing and communication of the most up-to-date information to members regarding practice regulations and more. Thank you for your consideration. 3

My role included a wide variety of Occupational Health Services including auditing, writing policies and procedures, providing training, claims management, and cost containment to present - Samuel, Son and Co. Limited- Working with the Corporate Health, Safety and Environment Dept. my role encompasses management of Health and Safety issues specifically focusing on return to work, modified work, training and wellness promotion for each of Ontario's fourteen sites. Professional and Community Affiliations College of Nurses of Ontario Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association 1986-present Canadian Nurses Association American Board for Occupational Health Nurses In addition to the work experience outlined above, I am often praised for my loyalty and diligence when it comes to the commitments I make. One of Occupational Health Nursing's biggest challenges, in my opinion, is the feeling of isolation and having to work alone. Occupational Health Nurses are so fortunate to have OOHNA to support and guide us through our various challenges. I will use my energy and passion for Occupational Health to work for the Board and OOHNA to continue to provide OOHNA members with opportunities for networking and continuing education in our field of nursing. In my opinion, OOHNA needs to strengthen our relationships with Colleges and Universities and make Occupational Health an integral part of their nursing curriculum. Much of the current curriculum could be linked to Occupational Health but at this point it is not. OOHNA can help Colleges and Universities bridge this gap in their nursing education. It would be an honour and a privilege to serve on the Board of Directors for OOHNA, an organization I have been a proud member of since I cannot think of a better place for me to share my passion, vision, organizational and leadership skills. 4

I am a St. Michael's Diploma RN, BA. Wrote my COHN(C) in 1992 and am a Nurse Clinical Specialist with the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses. I volunteered for a number of years as President of TOHNA (Toronto Occupational Health Nurses Association). A variety of employment experiences -- IPO lead for Public Offering at King's Health Centre. Programme Development and Facilitation for TDCanada Trust -- have always been enhanced by a solid relationship with OOHNA. I feel that now, with my experience and my eternal enthusiasm for the Occupational Health Nursing Profession, I am very happy about the possibility of learning more and sharing more. 7 It is my privilege to submit my name for your consideration to support and serve on the Board of the Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association in its continued evolution. I trained as a Legal Secretary out of high school and then took distant education classes to upgrade my science courses before applying for the Diploma Nursing course. I have worked in general surgery/trauma/surgical ICU, Transplant Donor Coordinator before becoming an occupational health nurse in Through my career as a transplant donor coordinator I had to work independently and as part of an intricate team. It provided me the knowledge and skills to work in high stress situations and use my critical thinking in various situations. As an Occupational Health Nurse, I have found that these were transferrable skills. I would like to assist new OHNs expand their education and knowledge base to become a specialist in a field that is growing every year. By being a member of OOHNA and having a network of OHNs I have been able to share/collaborate with others and pay it forward from the OHNs that did this for me. At the last conference and by newsletters sent to the members, the President of the organization has stressed the decline in membership. I feel very strongly that OOHNA is a leader in influencing the image and growth of occupational health nursing. I would like to aid in promoting the growth of the Occupational Health Nursing field and the Association by holding a position on the Board of Directors. By assisting in promotion and implementation of new ideas to increase the visibility of OOHNA to new nurses, nursing schools, nurses looking for a change in career and to the working world - we will not only benefit by increasing membership of the Association but also introduce Occupational Health to new Nurses. I would like to share my expertise in the various occupational health areas that I have experienced and support and mentor new occupational health nurses. I would like to assist with the collaboration in the organization to provide information, educational opportunities and resources to practice as an occupational health nurse. 7

It is my belief each person can be a healthy, productive and valuable employee in the workplace. The word disability clearly has ability in it. The Occupational Health Nurse has the advantage and best opportunity to educate and provide awareness, with tools, resources, etc. to enable employees to be healthy while at work and outside of work. 12 SAYANISA SUTHANTHIRAKARAN (Nisa Karan), RN, BSCN, OHN Waterloo, Ontario Bachelors of Science in Nursing - Ryerson University Additional continuing education/certifications from Conestoga College, Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences and Ryerson University I have several years of experience in Occupational Health as well as Public Health in various Settings. I have worked in communicable disease control with the municipality; and have worked in several disability management positions for major insurance companies. For the past two years I have been working with a national occupational health nursing organization by the name of Wellpoint Health where I have served multiple realms of manufacturing including motor manufacturing. Professional Affiliations I am a member of the College of nurses of Ontario in Good Standing as well as the Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association. Over the years, I have held many leadership positions including those that contribute to the development of nursing students. I was the former President of Ryerson s Inter-Professional Student Educators (RISE), I have presented at many workshops and seminars as well as national conferences. I have held over a dozen leadership positions with Ryerson University as well as Centennial College and have travelled across Ontario as a delegate for Conference such as the Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Healthcare, Canadian National Community Health Nursing Conferences, and the Occupational Health Nurses Conference to name a few. Currently I am the employee Co-Chair of WellPoint s Joint Health and Safety Committee as well as a member of their Health and Wellness Committee. Ultimately, my goal as a member of the Occupational Health Nurses Association is to bring forth my leadership skills to enhance change and innovation. The workforce is something that cannot be avoided and worker health is a topic that remains minimal. A healthy workforce contributes to optimal productivity. Working is a huge part of a person s life, ensuring a worker is healthy will improve their quality of life overall; this is the essence of nursing yet the topic of workers health is commonly dismissed. What I have noticed over the years especially as a person who is very engaged in mentoring up and coming nurses, is that Occupational Health Nursing is a field of nursing that remains unnoticed. Many people only know the surface of Occupational Health Nursing, and have yet to realize the true importance of it. What is even more critical is to note that nurses take care of people but in order for those people to be taken care of by our nurses, our nurses need to be healthy themselves; both physically and mentally. My goal is to ensure that the voices of the nurses who are apart of OOHNA are heard. To ensure each concern it addressed, and to ensure a plan is put into place to foster continuous support of our own nurses. My goal is to ensure that continuing education for our nurses is available and to place importance on support and mentorship. By using an upstream approach, my goal is to identify the needs of our occupational nurses and fill in those gaps; whether it is their own health or if it s the needs of their clients. My goal, as a member of the board of directors is also to focus on the organizations ability to bleed into the minds of the younger generation. Not only utilize my knowledge and leadership skills to improve the organizations current position but also to encourage the up and coming generation to learn more about the field, participate, and ensure Occupational Health Nursing continues to hold its strong position in the Nursing world as a whole. My goal is to build healthy partnerships, not only with those already in the field to continue their growth but within institutions that house the minds of the future generation. 12

Learning opportunities facilitated through OOHNA also assist us to deliver quality services to achieve a healthy and safe workplace. These endeavors are significant to the growth of our profession and we need to continue to advocate the importance of our role and scope of practice in the business environment and government.
