5 President s Welcome Dear Colleagues and Professional Associates, The OOHNA Board of Directors is pleased to invite you to the 47th Annual OOHNA Conference. Keeping Workers Well 2018, being held Thursday, May 31 at the Centre for Health & Safety Innovation, Mississauga, Ontario. For 2018, the Board decided to host a one-day conference followed by a one-day workshop focusing on Managing Employees in Distress Tools to Support Emotional and Cognitive Concerns in the Workplace. January 2018 saw the start of many changes affecting Occupational Health and Safety: Bill 148, Fair Workplace, Better Jobs Act; the WSIB s Chronic Mental and Traumatic Stress policies; and changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to name a few. The mandate of the OOHNA conference has always been to provide up-to-date information on key issues affecting its members. This year s program features a new format which offers a one-day conference of informative plenary sessions addressing these important changes and their impact on the profession. WSIB CEO and former Deputy Premier of Ontario, Elizabeth Witmer, will open the WSIB s session on Chronic Mental Stress; followed by Greg McGinnis and Laura Russell, partners at the firm Mathews, Dinsdale, Clark LLP, who will address the legal and legislative issues changing the OHS landscape. As much of the new legislation amendments focus on the issues of mental stress and its impact on the workplace, we invited mental health leaders, Carlos Davidovich and Mary Ann Baynton to round out the agenda with their views on the importance of psychological health and safety. How do you manage an employee who comes to the OHS department in distress? Do you know what to do -- How to begin the conversation? Nancy Gowan s June 1st workshop will focus on managing employees is distress what tools you need to support emotional and cognitive concerns in the workplace.
