What is Perianesthesia Nursing? Nursing care of clients who will, in the imminent future, or are presently or have just been under the influence of a sedative or anesthetic agent. Perianesthesia nursing is considered a specialty area of nursing practice and the Ontario Perianesthesia Nurses Association (), as the provincial professional association, has taken responsibility to define the scope of perianesthesia nursing practice. Nursing roles include patient care, education, administration, management, consultation, advocacy and research. Our nursing practice is comprised of nursing processes, decision making, critical thinking, and inquiry. 3 What is? is the professional association founded in 1985 to represent all nurses involved in the care of a client in the postanesthetic phase following a therapeutic procedure. In 1989 nurses working in Day Surgery Units were invited to join. Presently, is working towards developing a certification exam in collaboration with associated professional groups (i.e., CNA, NAPAN ). was created to provide PACU and DS nurses with a means to network with colleagues across the province in regards to practice, education, and research. We have over 500 members from all regions of Ontario. Our membership has grown to include nurses in the community involved with perianesthesia. These include dental suites and plastic surgery centers. In 2001, the National Association of PeriAnesthesia Nurses of Canada, NAPAN, was officially recognized by the Canadian Nurses Association. This uniquely Canadian body advocates for our clients from a national perspective. All members are members of NAPAN. Standards of Practice has developed professional benchmarks for the profession. The Standards are utilized by virtually all Ontario hospitals with PACU, Day Surgery or Pre Admission departments.
