1 Induction Week Programme & Timetable September 2012 BA ENGLISH BA ENGLISH & CREATIVE WRITING ALL SESSIONS WILL BE HELD ON THE BISHOP OTTER CAMPUS Welcome to University of Chichester. This is the Induction Week timetable for the programme of English and Creative Writing. In this first week, you will register, find your way around the campus, learn about the University s facilities and meet with lecturers and other students. If you experience any problems at any time, you can go to the Department Office (Room 221) on the First floor of New Hall. There you will find Lorna Sargent, English & Creative Writing Programme Administrator (ext. 6163) and Jane Faragher, English Programme Administrator (ext. 6479) who will do their very best to help you. Alternatively please visit the SIZ (Support and Information Zone) located in both Learning Resources Centres where a member of staff will be very happy to assist you. You can also contact the SIZ by (help@chi.ac.uk) or by phone ( ). TRANSPORTATION For all students, there is the inter-campus bus service. Buses arrive and leave the Bognor Regis Campus (BRC) from the bus stop opposite the site on Upper Bognor Road. For the Bishop Otter Campus (BOC) buses arrive and leave from opposite the Learning Resource Centre. Bus timetables can be found at the SIZ (Support and Information Zone) of both campuses, or via the Quick Links on Portia, (Open your Portia account, click the Uni Services tab, followed by the Bus Timetable title which appears under Support Services on the left-hand side of the screen). Tickets can be purchased at both SIZ counters. INDUCTION It is compulsory to attend the induction events timetabled on the following pages. A lot of vital information will be relayed during these sessions. The Induction Programme begins on Monday 24th September. Purchasing of core text for 2012 Waterstones of Chichester is offering all University of Chichester Students a 10% discount off of your core text books. The discount will only be available in the Chichester store from Sunday 23rd September until Sunday 8th October. All you will need to do is show your University of Chichester Student Card to obtain the discount. Please be aware that not all texts will be in stock, and that Waterstones may have to order in your item. They will give you a call when it is ready for collection.

3 Please note all International Students (eg. non -UK nationality, anyone for whom English is not your first language, or anyone who has lived or studied outside the UK), are required to attend either of two Orientation Programmes for International students on 7th or 20th - 21st September as advised by your communication from Admissions. This includes all International students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and is in addition to your subject Induction. Further details of the orientation programme can be found on the Admissions Portal, or please contact Julia Young at J.Young@chi.ac.uk Attention year 1/level 4 international students Please note if English is not your first/main language and you plan to combine your degree studies with International English Studies you should also attend the International English Studies Induction on Wednesday September 26th in room TBC on the Bognor campus (BRC). Academic Advisor appointments; Introduction to your Academic Advisor. These brief, 5 minute appointments, will be made for you either on Wednesday 26 th or Thursday 27 th September. These will be confirmed before or by Welcome session Tuesday 25 th September. Library Induction appointments: These will be set around your lectures, during your second week of studies and confirmed to you in week 1.

4 Health and Safety Induction Information Sheet Legislation The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the University Health and Safety Policy both require the University to: Provide and maintain safe systems of work Ensure safe means of handling, use, storage and transport of articles and substances. Provide information, instruction, training and supervision Provide safe place of work including safe access and egress Provide and maintain safe working environment and adequate welfare facilities. In return students must: Not cause harm to themselves or others through any work activity. Not to interfere with any equipment unless specifically trained to use it. To cooperate with your employer (Supervisor, tutor, or member of staff) when dealing with health and safety issues. To report any deficiencies in health and safety to a member of staff. Incident Reporting (Oops cards) Incident Report Forms are kept by first aiders, at the SIZ counters, and within admin areas and must be completed after an incident. It is important to report accidents and near misses (a near miss is an accident without injury) in order to stop the event reoccurring and possibly injuring you! Simply complete the form and hand it in to your staff or the Health and Safety Department. First Aid Maps are posted in all major buildings and in other nominated locations showing the location of first aiders. The University has both trained First Aiders, Defibrillator trained and Appointed persons who can administer first aid. To obtain First Aid help at Chichester, in the first instance, dial (5258) on an internal phone or from a mobile. For Bognor dial (5564) or State what the injury is and your location. After which a first aider will be despatched. Call the caretaker if outside of office hours ( ) on if at Chichester or if at Bognor Regis. If an ambulance is needed immediately dial 999 and then inform the caretaker. Fire Emergency Arrangements ON SEEING A FIRE, Shout Fire and make your way to the nearest fire exit. On your way out press an available call point, (red box found at every exit) to raise the alarm. Make your way to the assembly point and await further instruction. ON HEARING THE ALARM, Stop what you are doing, and make your way to the nearest escape route. Do not stop to collect valuables, do not panic. Mobility impaired students should move to an area sign posted safe refuge and await rescue. If you know of a person waiting in a refuge area please inform the person in charge (Fire Incident Coordinator, identified by a fluorescent jacket). Do not re- enter the building until you are told by the Fire Incident Coordinator or the Fire and Rescue Services?

5 Mobility impaired students are requested to obtain a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan from Student Services. Fire Alarms are tested weekly and will be heard for a length of no more than 15 seconds. Should an alarm bell sound for longer, then treat this as an actual fire evacuation and act accordingly. Many larger buildings will have more than one exit route. Learn other emergency routes and follow the green running man signage which will take you out to a safe area. Fire doors are designed to stop the spread of smoke and retain a fire for at least 30 minutes. This is why we require all fire doors to remain closed. Wedged fire doors do not protect anyone! Most buildings will have a fire action notice similar to the example opposite. This will reiterate the advice already above as to how to vacate and contact the emergency services. Also make a note of the designated Assembly Point. Personal Safety The Campus is an open site and the General Public can come onto it. Therefore please ensure you. Keep all valuables hidden or locked away. Do not leave valuables in an empty room (unless a fire emergency evacuation is required). Keep to pavements and walkways Adhere to any safety signage you come across. Other Hazards During your time at the University you will come across a variety of different hazards. At some stage of your course, you will come across the concept of risk assessment. This is a means of identifying hazards that you or another person has made, identify those person at risk of harm and the measures that are in place or needed to ensure the risk of harm is reduced to as is reasonably practicable. Such hazards could be due to Electricity, working at height, manual handling, poor ergonomics, hazardous substances, equipment use and environmental factors.
