2 Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School, Huddersfield Health & Safety Policy This is a statement of policy with regard to the health and safety of pupils and Staff in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School. It does not replace the L.A. s safety policy but is in addition to it. This statement deals with those aspects over which the head has control and covers safety associated with the building structure, plant, fixed equipment and services, for which other officers of the Authority also have some responsibility. It describes how the Head is discharging his responsibilities in respect of pupils, visitors and other employees, who are present on school premises, in the internal organisation, management and discipline of the school. The aim of the statement is to ensure that all reasonably practical steps are taken to secure the health, safety and welfare of all persons using the premises. Our aim is to: 1. Establish and maintain a safe and health environment throughout the school. 2. Establish and maintain safe working procedure among staff and pupils. 3. Make arrangements for ensuring safety and absence of risks to health, in connection with the use, handling, storage and transporting of articles and substances. 4. Ensure the provision of sufficient information, instruction and supervision to enable all people working at school, and pupils, to avoid hazards and contribute positively to their own safety and health at work and to ensure that they have access to health and safety training as and when provided. 5. Maintain a safe and healthy place of work and safe access to it. 6. Formulate effective procedures in the case of fire and other emergencies and for evacuating the school premises. 7. Lay down procedures to be followed in case of accident. 8. Provide and maintain adequate Welfare facilities. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES A. Headteacher The ultimate responsibility for all school safety organisation rests with the headteacher, with day to day management actioned by the site manager, who liaises closely with the headteacher. 1. Be the focal point for day to day reference on safety and give advice or indicate sources of advice. 2. Co-ordinate the implementation of the approved safety procedures in the school. 3. Maintain contact with outside agencies able to offer expert advice. 4. Report all known hazards immediately to the authority and stop any practices considered to be unsafe.

3 5. Make or arrange for investigation of premises and ensure that he is kept informed of accidents and hazardous situations. 6. Review from time to time the provision of first aid in the school and emergency regulations. 7. Inform the governors of the safety procedures of the school from time to time. 8. Health and Safety issues are dealt with at the staff briefing each Monday morning by the site manager. B. Class teacher The safety of pupils in classrooms or other areas generally used by the pupils is the responsibility of the class teachers, who have traditionally carried the responsibility for the safety of pupils when they are in their charge. Class teachers are expected: 1. To exercise effective supervision of the pupils and to know the emergency procedures in case of fire, bomb scare and first aid and to carry them out. 2. To give clear instructions and warning, as often as necessary, to avoid potentially dangerous situations. 3. To follow safe working procedures. C. Pupils Pupils are expected: 1. To exercise personal responsibility for their own and others safety. 2. To observe standards of dress consistent with safety and hygiene. 3. To observe all the safety rules of the school and in particular the instructions of staff given in an emergency. 4. To avoid wilful misuse of, or interference with, things provided for safety reasons. D. Visitors Visitors are also required to observe the safety rules of the school and in particular parents and students working in school should be made aware of the health and safety arrangements applicable to them through the class teacher to whom they are assigned.

4 Procedures Accidents to employees and other adults: Minor injuries are recorded in the Staff First Aid Accident Book and first aid is administered by qualified first aiders. Major injuries are reported on the Kirklees Council incident reporting site: Pupil Accidents: Minor injuries are recorded in the First Aid Accident Book and first aid is administered by qualified first aiders. Major injuries are reported on the Kirklees Council incident reporting site: In the case of illness, asthma attacks etc. medication will only be administrated on the clear instruction of the child s parents. Fire: (See Fire Policy). Hazards: All staff to be aware of minor hazards spillages, blocked passages, loose equipment on the floor etc. and deal with them accordingly. More serious hazards damage to property, loose fittings etc. to be reported to the head teacher, deputy head and/or caretaker. All cleaning materials and chemicals to be stored safely. COSHH Regulations strictly adhered to. Safety of Electrical and Other Equipment: The fire alarm, security alarm systems all electrical equipment and P.E. equipment to be regularly inspected by L.A. approved contractors. Infectious diseases: (Follow L.A. guidance). Smoking Policy: It is the policy of the school that smoking does not take place anywhere on school premises.

5 Security: The caretaker, deputy headteacher and headteacher are the three emergency contacts registered with the security alarm company and with the police. The site supervisor is generally responsible for the un-locking and locking arrangements of the school. Keys to the school are held by the caretaker, head, and deputy headteacher.
