3 Background Information Judgemeadow Community is a highly successful and popular Community College with over 1200 students, situated in a state-of-the art school building on a 65 acre site in vington, on the outskirts of the city of Leicester. Judgemeadow serves a diverse multiethnic, multicultural community and enjoys an excellent reputation in the local community. Centre of xcellence for Languages and Internationalism The College gained Specialist School status in September 1999 as a Centre of xcellence for Modern Languages and Internationalism. Judgemeadow has achieved the Full International School Award. This is only awarded to schools which have an international ethos embedded throughout the school and have curriculum based international work across a range of subjects. Impressive xam Results In the summer 2016 exams, 71% of Judgemeadow Year 11 students gained 5 or more subjects, including nglish and Maths, at grade A*, A, B or C in their GCS exams. There were also some excellent individual student results and, in addition, using the measure known as the nglish Baccalaureate, 37% of Judgemeadow students achieved the required level. Awards and Accreditations The College has been named as one of the first 20 Lead Behaviour Schools with exemplary behaviour. Lead Behaviour Schools have proven expertise in behaviour management and the promotion of positive pupil behaviour in their school. Judgemeadow was awarded 'Investors in People' status in This has been reconfirmed at regular 'IIP health checks'. We were also delighted to achieve National Healthy School Status for our principles of developing healthy bodies, healthy minds and healthy attitudes. We have also been successful in achieving the British Dyslexia Association Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark award for the school, the BDA s sign of approval of a dyslexia friendly organisation.

4 Science Department We are a forward thinking and dynamic team comprised of 14 teachers and 2 technicians. Our aim is to ensure that all students make the very best progress that they can in a positive and enjoyable environment. Our five labs are modern and well equipped and the remainder of our teaching space includes a breakout area and four classrooms. We are very lucky to be in a new building set in beautiful grounds. The view from the main science windows as the sun rises is stunning. 5 Science Technician Level 1 Further information about the Post The Post The provision of technical and general laboratory support and administration within the Science Department. Responsibilities/Duties The construction and repair of equipment. nsuring chemicals are safely stored and maintained. Preparation of chemical solutions. Collection of equipment and materials from storage and their organisation for staff use. Preparation of equipment, including ICT equipment, and materials for lessons both for demonstration and class use. Checking materials and equipment, before and after use by a class, for quantity and damage. Care and maintenance of audio-visual equipment and associated aids and the organisation of specific maintenance to equipment/apparatus. Care of plants kept in the Science department. Maintenance of the laboratories to ensure a clean, safe, orderly environment. Advising science teachers on safety matters or potential problems with equipment, providing a risk assessment has been made. Routine checking of apparatus/equipment/laboratories especially with regard to safety and the reporting of any Health and Safety risk to the Head of Science/ Principal/ Premises Officer, as necessary Assisting Science staff with class practical work when necessary, including lessons using ICT. The clearing away, cleaning and storing of glassware and other equipment. The safe disposal of chemical and biological waste. Placing orders and checking deliveries. Mounting displays of materials and pupils work. Duplicating and photocopying, when necessary. Maintenance of an inventory of materials and equipment and associated stock taking duties Liaison with external contractors. Preparation of paper materials for lessons e.g card activities. Pay and Conditions Salary, LG Band 3, point 11-14, 16,481-17,547 (Actual salary 9, ,776.19). 4 days a week - Mon, Wed-Fri - 6 hours a day plus ½ an hour for lunch, term time plus 4 teacher days. 7 Job Description and Level Criteria Matrix Post Title: Science Technician Post Number: 9019 Date: SPTMBR 2009 Department: Children & Young People s Services Division / Branch: School/College Section: Technical Support Staff Responsible to: Varies Overall Purpose of this Post: To develop, manage, organise and co-ordinate the physical and human resources used to support the teaching of science in the school. Major Objectives: These will include, as appropriate, those that reflect key corporate priorities, for example, Cultural Diversity, Social Justice, nvironmental Quality and conomic Prosperity. 1. To ensure that the technical staff and their procedures meet the needs of the Science Faculty/Department s staff and students. 2. To ensure that the Science Faculty/Department s apparatus, equipment, chemicals, compounds and other material resources are accounted for and are stored or maintained in accordance with national and local policy and procedures. 3. To assist teachers in the provision of high quality science lessons by providing and setting up practical resources as requested. 4. To optimise the use and availability of science materials and equipment and maintain the highest standards of safety. 5. To ensure that classrooms, preparation and storage areas are kept clean and spillages and waste are properly disposed of. 6. To develop technical expertise in the equipment and apparatus used in science teaching and new techniques that facilitate practical and investigative work in science teaching. 7. To ensure that the School s/college s policy and procedures are followed in dealing with parents, staff and pupils. 8. To maintain good relationships with parents, staff and students. 9. To implement and promote the School/College & Leicester City Council's policies and procedures relating to all areas of employment and service delivery. 8 Summary of job tasks: The tasks listed are, generally, only those taking at least 10% of the postholder's time. 1. Manages all resources within the Science Faculty/Department designating classes, tasks and responsibilities as appropriate to assigned technician staff. 2. Oversees, records and accounts for any apparatus, equipment, laboratory services, facilities, stationery, schemes of work, etc and monitoring stock levels and assisting with the planning of new or replacement needs/requirements and budget process etc. 3. Orders new and replacement materials/equipment and checks invoices from suppliers in accordance with annual budget/plan, using petty cash for consumable purchases. 4. Prepares and sets up equipment, apparatus, materials, solutions and stationery for use in demonstrations or practical science classes, assisting where appropriate. 5. Retrieves and clears away apparatus after classes, disposes of waste laboratory materials and spillages in accordance with guidelines. 6. Organises and monitors the storage of equipment, materials and apparatus in the preparation areas and records use of appropriate hazardous materials according to departmental procedures. 7. Assists with resolving difficulties with equipment & apparatus used in science lessons. 8. Develops new science practicals/demonstrations and trains staff in these and in the use of science equipment/apparatus. 9. Covers in the absence of any other science technician staff. Assists with demonstrating experiments for new /temporary staff including PGC students. Supports organisation and administration of trips. Deals with parents/guardians on the telephone in absence of the teacher. Supports teacher in the classroom and occasionally pupils in their projects.
