SPECIAL HOLIDAY EDITION Volume 2, Special Holiday Issue ume, Issue I December 2009 Inside this issue: DIRECTOR S CORNER The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. -- Helen Keller As I reflect on the past year, gone by far too rapidly, I could not be more proud of all that we have accomplished. We now have over 180 PA s in main campus practices and over 100 PA s in our regional hospitals. This makes us the largest full time employer in Ohio and one of the top employers in the U.S. We have 37 PA positions available for hire, and are presently interviewing for these. We were highlighted once again in the AAPA News magazine for the innovative work done in Plastic surgery. We welcomed Mt. Union s inaugural PA class to our campus for the first of a kind Cadaver lab for gross anatomy. The instruction was inter-twined with residents and medical students. An extremely valuable learning experience for all. 75% of our PA s now have their Certificate to Prescribe and are obtaining their DEA numbers. We offered our first LP cadaver lab in conjunction with our multiple joint injection cadaver lab. (One of its kind in the U.S.) PA PRACTICE UPDATE 2 COMPLIANCE 3 STATE LEGISLATION 4 Important Notices: CTP, Licenses 5 Joint Commission Update 6 PA Week Awards Ceremony 7 Job Postings / Future Events 8 We have joined the Allied Health Services under the direction of Dr. Stoller of Medical Education and Dr. Group to integrate the PA student clinical experience with all of our Health System practices. And we had one of our most highly rated CME programs held at the InterContinental Ballroom., offering 20 Category I CME s. This past year, you have given so much of yourselves to our patients. It is evident in the patient satisfaction scores, in the physician s satisfaction with their practices, and evident within your peers engagement. Without you, PA Services would not be successful. Without you, the Cleveland Clinic would not be heralded as a flag ship for PA student training. And most of all, without you, there would be a great fracture in the delivery of quality health care to our patients. You have made a difference, not only to the patients, but also to me. I am truly thankful for all of you. Have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Thanks for reading, and Seize the Day! Josanne

P AGE 2 PA PRACTICE UPDATE 2010: All PA s will be re-privileged Two cycles of privileging: June and December You will receive your packet in March and September depending on your privileging date. 2010: All supervisory agreements must be renewed (Oct. to Jan. 2010) PA Services will be handling this for all of main campus agreements (included FHC, ASC). 2010: No plans for a CCF PA CME for OAPA Pharmacology CME: April 16, 17, 2010; Cuyahoga Falls 12 hrs OAPA CME: Fall of 2010; site TBA; 20 hrs. JCAHO may be on site at any time now until March, 2010 See JCAHO readiness online:

P AGE 3 COMPLIANCE Verbal orders: If you have not obtained your CTP yet, please update PA services as to when you will be obtaining it. If you have not obtained your DEA; please do so. We are continuing weekly monitoring of ALL Verbal orders with reports to admin. JCAHO mandate: NO (or limited) Verbal orders Competency: The competency profile must be filled out and turned in to PA Services along with your re-privileging packet. QA: A completed QA form must also be turned in with your re-privileging packet.

P AGE 4 STATE LEGISLATION OAPA is working on legislation for Ohio PA s to include but not limited to: Schedule II authority Out of state PA hiring practice Medical Home model to include PA s Transparency Immunity of Health care workers in emergency / disaster settings

P AGE 5 IMPORTANT NOTICES Certificate to Prescribe Deadline License Renewals Renewing Your Certificate to Prescribe As you know, you are now required to have 12 pharmacology specific CME hours over and above the required 100 CME hours in order to renew your Certificate to Prescribe. During your first renewal cycle after receiving your Certificate to Prescribe you may only need a prorated amount of pharmacology CME. CTP received between February 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009 you need 6 CME hours. CTP received between February 1, 2009 and July 31, 2009 you need 3 CME hours. CTP received between August 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010 you need 0 CME hours. You will receive a renewal application for your Certificate to Prescribe and you will not need to submit verification of the pharmacology CME but verification should be retained in case you get audited. Applying for your Permanent Certificate to Prescribe Please note that there could be a window of time when you cannot apply for your permanent CTP until you have renewed your license. This shouldn t cause too much concern because you can still prescribe under your provisional CTP until your license is renewed and permanent application can be made.
