1 MSU NURSING SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION I. Criteria for Student Scholarships/Awards Students are directed to the MSU Financial Aid Office to complete the MSU Scholarship Application annually to be eligible for awards. The Minot State University Undergraduate Catalog provides an overview of scholarships and awards available to students enrolled in the nursing major. This information is found in the Financial Aid Section of the catalog. Award decisions at the Department of Nursing will be determined each February with the allocation of the award money for the following academic year. This process complies with the MSU Financial Aids recommendation. A scholarship/awards ceremony for the Department of Nursing is held in conjunction with the fall Nursing Convocation. The Student-Faculty Affairs Committee will distribute scholarship information at the end of the fall semester. The student is responsible for completing the application process by the designated deadline date. Applications and nominations for scholarship/awards are submitted to the Student- Faculty Affairs Committee by the designated deadline date. The Student-Faculty Affairs Committee brings recommendations to the Department of Nursing Faculty Committee for final decisions. The Student-Faculty Affairs Committee and Faculty Committee bring recommendations to the Department Chairperson for final selection of the Awards. II. List of available scholarships A. Betsy Nokleby Scholarship Established by the Student Association, in honor of the late Betsy Nokleby, who served as a College Nurse for 26 years. Scholarship monies are provided from the accumulated interest on memorials and other donations. The scholarship is awarded to one or two second semester junior or first semester senior students currently enrolled in the nursing curriculum. The student selection is based on financial need and work output as opposed to GPA. The minimum amount of each award will be $ a. Second semester junior or first semester senior student. b. Need not be a North Dakota resident. c. Full or part-time student. a. Second semester junior and senior students and faculty may submit names of nominees to be considered by Student-Faculty Affairs Committee. B. Betty Halvorson Scholarship Charlotte Thiemecke-Floyd, Ed. D. established this endowment in memory of her sister Betty Halvorson who passed away in Betty served as Director of Nursing Service

2 and Education at Bismarck Hospital before moving to Minot where she taught at Trinity School of Nursing and became the Director of Nursing for ten years. Betty taught at Minot State University in the Nursing program from 1980 until retiring in Selection Procedure a. Must show academic excellence b. Have a broad perspective of nursing c. Demonstrate leadership qualities, i.e. decision-making, organizational skills, social skills, responsible dependable. d. Is ethical and morally strong e. Prepare a brief essay describing the characteristics she/he believes are required to be an outstanding nurse. C. Chair s Award The Chair s Scholarship from the Fabricius-Steinle Endowment. a. Available to one or more students who have benefitted nursing or made a lasting, positive effect on nursing by: i. Displaying innovation, creativity, or leadership; ii. Communicating an idea or raising a question; or iii. Implementing a project. a. Students are recommended by the faculty. Selection is made by the Chair of the Department. D. Department of Nursing Alumni Scholarship Established in 1995 from funds donated by alumni of the Department of Nursing to benefit nursing students. a. Any student who has received a formal letter of acceptance for admission by the Department of Nursing and has begun the nursing major (currently enrolled in or completed Nursing Foundations or higher course) is eligible to apply for the scholarship. b. The student must submit an essay (1 or 2 typed pages) to the Student Faculty Affairs Committee. The essay title may change from year to year. c. The SFA committee is responsible for establishing and publishing the criteria by which the essays are evaluated. a. The student Faculty Affairs Committee will appoint the selection committee made up of alumni and faculty. b. The appointed committee will review the essays and make a selection using established criteria: c. Clear articulation of personal factors that came to bear on your choice of nursing as a career. d. Collegiate level communication abilities should be demonstrated in the essay.

3 e. The committee will rank essays based on these criteria and make a recommendation to the SFA Committee. f. The SFA Committee will bring the recommendation to the Faculty Committee. E. Elizabeth Pross Scholarship Endowment Dr. Pross (Beth) dedicated her life to helping others. She was a nurse/nurse educator for over 30 years. Beth found her passion in researching and implementing the Caring Nursing theory. She also loved teaching and interacting with her students. She was dedicated to her students and their success. Her colleagues described her as a bright light, driven and a warm-hearted person. Beth s dedication was not only prevalent in her profession but also I her family life. Nothing was more important to Beth than her two daughters, her siblings and the members of her extended family. Beth loved to travel, visit family and spend as much time as she could at the beach near the ocean she loved so dearly. This fund was established to continue the work and keep the memories of Dr. Pross alive. a. Nursing student must be female. b. Student must show evidence of community service during previous semester (minimum of 10 hours). c. Student must explain how they have implemented the caring theory or how they plan to implement it in their career in the future to improve the quality of nursing. F. Emma Misner Scholarship Endowment Established in memory of Emma L. Misner by her nephew and his wife, Don and Deb Wahus of Williston along with their daughter Elisabeth Wahus Davison who is a 2003 BSN graduate. Both Don and Deb are 1972 grads in Psychology. Two scholarships are to be given annually. a. North Dakota resident. b. Recipient must be in 2 nd semester (second half of their junior year). a. Students applying must submit a one page essay answering the question, "What is the most important quality of a nurse and why?" This will be reviewed by Ms. Davison and after her review, she will submit recommendations to the nursing department. G. Evelyn R. Nielsen Scholarship Established by her family in memory of Evelyn Nielsen, a registered nurse who was a member of the World War II Nurse Corps, and a long-time member of District #2 of the North Dakota Nurses Association. a. Full time MSU undergraduate in the nursing major. b. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Preference is given to an officer or member of the Nursing Student Association- Minot State University who has made an active contribution to and/or held a leadership position in the NSA, Department of Nursing, nursing profession, or community service. a. Students and faculty may submit names of nominees to be considered by the Student Faculty Affairs Committee and submitted to faculty. H. Francis Svee Scholarship Established by Harvey Svee of Lansford, North Dakota, in memory of Francis Svee who was MSU Director of Nursing from Scholarship monies are provided from the interest on memorial gifts and other donations. The scholarship will be awarded to the student contingent upon continued enrollment. The student is selected on the basis of consistent demonstration of attributes that indicate an understanding of the psychosocial aspects of their fellow man -- characteristics of caring and unconditional acceptance, displayed by Dr. Svee during her lifetime and in whose memory the scholarship is given. The value depends upon the amount of money in the scholarship fund. The minimum amount to be awarded will be $ a. North Dakota resident. b. Full or part-time student. c. Second semester junior or first semester senior (including NURS 354) in nursing major. d. Meets identified psychosocial criteria: i. Caring ii. Unconditional acceptance a. The students and faculty may submit name(s) of nominee(s) in writing to the Student-Faculty Affairs Committee. I. Grace Fisher Nursing Scholarship Endowment Established by Grace Fisher May Grace Fisher was born and raised in Minot. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history from Minot State University in She worked at Minot Daily News for many years. Later, she worked with her husband Thomas A. Fisher at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Minot. Grace was a member of the MSU Board of Regents and involved in various other activities at MSU. The scholarship will be awarded to students in the Nursing or other health related field of study. a. Student must be enrolled in the Nursing program. b. Student must be sophomore, junior or senior J. Gunnar Solberg Scholarship A trust fund established by Gunnar Solberg, a long time farmer/rancher. The number of scholarships depends on trust fund income. Each scholarship is approximately $1000.

5 a. Nursing students eligible for the junior or senior year. b. Students must be a citizen or an eligible non-citizen. c. Student must demonstrate financial need as determined by an approved needs analysis service. The Gunnar Solberg Scholarship Committee uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form of needs analysis. The needs analysis results will be used in combination with other information that the university has regarding the student's eligibility and financial status. d. Students must be maintaining satisfactory progress as defined by the University and Department of Nursing. Satisfactory progress is maintaining a 2.0 grade point average and completing 66% or more of the credits attempted. e. Students must be enrolled full time in a nursing program leading to a degree, and be under the supervision of area hospitals. f. Student must not be in default on any educational loan funds received while attending any institution or owe a refund on any educational funds received while attending any institution. g. Student applying for the Solberg Scholarship must complete the following forms each year: i. A Gunnar Solberg Scholarship Application ii. FAFSA a. Applications must be submitted to the Financial Aids Office. The deadline for submitting applications is February 1 of each academic year or as designated by the Financial Aids Office. b. Students selected to receive the Gunnar Solberg Scholarship fund will be selected based on gross need. Gross need is defined as the estimated cost of education less the expected family contribution, as determined the FAFSA. All students applying for this scholarship will use the estimated cost of education figure as assigned by Minot State University. The estimated cost of education figure will include the costs of the student only. The estimated cost of education includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, board and room, transportation, personal expenses, additional nursing costs, and child care cost. This will allow all students applying for the Gunnar Solberg Scholarship to be evaluated on an equal basis. Once the students have been selected to receive a scholarship, the Financial Aid Office at Minot State University will send notification to the students. K. Halvor and Orma Nesheim Scholarship Established in 2008 by Mark and Noel Nesheim, this scholarship honors Halvor and Orma Nesheim. Halvor was an electrical and general contractor and Orma had been a nursing student and valued the nursing profession.

6 a. Must be resident of Mountrail or Ward County, North Dakota. b. Must maintain GPA of 3.0 or higher. c. Preference given to a student intending to stay in ND following graduation. L. Helen Chatfield Shurr Endowment Scholarship One or more scholarships ($300 or more) honoring a pioneer registered nurse who was a member of the first graduating class of the Sisters of St. Francis School of Nursing/St. Joseph s Hospital School of Nursing in Recommendations are made by either faculty or the individual student. Funds may be used to support specific Nursing Program needs. a. Student admitted to nursing major. b. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. c. Plans to enroll in four (4) to six (6) credits of nursing courses toward the BSN degree. d. Be eligible to enroll in 400 level nursing courses at Minot State University. e. Completion of at least 38 semester hours in nursing courses f. A North Dakota resident. g. Preference is given to an RN or LPN pursuing a BSN degree. h. Writes one page on the topic Describe your professional growth since your decision to obtain a BSN. a. The Student Faculty Affairs Committee will review the applicants essays and make recommendations to the Faculty Committee. M. Janice Smith Nursing Scholarship Endowment Established October, 2011 in memory of Janice Smith. Janice was born on August 24, 1937 in Rugby, ND. She was a lifelong learner, she had a 50 year career in nursing with degrees that included registered nurse, bachelor s degree in nursing and nurse practitioner. a. Full-time MSU student in the nursing major. N. Jim and Karen Jensen Nursing Scholarship Endowment The Jim and Karen Jensen Nursing Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 to support scholarships to benefit nursing students at Minot State University. Jim and Karen Jensen have been distinguished supporters of MSU and have been leading donors in numerous MSU fund drives including the McFarland Auditorium Campaign honoring Karen s teaching career with a classroom established in her name. Jim Jenson is a lifelong Minot resident and has served on numerous Board of Directors including Trinity Health, Dakota Boys Ranch Foundation, Minot Area Chamber of Commerce, Minot Area Development Corporation, All Seasons Arena Committee and Zion Lutheran Church. In addition, Jim has served on the MSU Board of Regents since 1979.

7 O. Joan Love Christianson Scholarship Established by her family as a memorial to Joan who died in July 2000 from a chronic illness. Joan was a dedicated registered nurse who served in the USAF Nurse Corps, in the Minot area, and in Georgia. a. Full-time MSU student in the nursing major. b. Maintain the minimum academic standards required by MSU Department of Nursing. a. Students and faculty may submit names of nominees to be considered to the Student Faculty Affairs Committee, who will then make a recommendation to the Faculty Committee. P. Keith & Elema Cunningham Endowment Elsie Cunningham established the Keith and Elema Cunningham Endowment in memory of her husband Keith and his first wife Elema who passed away when their two sons, Chuck and Shan were 11 and 9 years of age. Chuck was a 1968 MSU graduate. Elsie served in the USAF as a non-active duty nurse for 10 years. In June 2012, she moved to Bakersfield, CA at the age of 88. a. Recipient must be a nursing student. b. Recipient must show financial need. Q. Lois Bellet Williams Nursing Scholarship Endowment Lois Bellet Williams was born September 20, 1941, in Williston to Kenneth L. and Esther Bellet. She attended school at Springbrook and graduated from Epping High School in Lois enrolled in the Trinity Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in She married Robert B. Williams June 17, 1962, in Williston. Lois pursued her career working as a nurse when the couple lived in Minot, Newfoundland, Williston, and Anchorage, Alaska. They returned to Springbrook in 1976 approximately two years before she passed away on January 4, Lois was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Professional Nurses Association and Springbrook Homemakers. She has two children, Kenneth and Sherry. a. Preference given to applicants who are from Williams, McKenzie, Burke or Divide counties, North Dakota. b. If no applicants are from the above mentioned counties, the chair of the nursing department will first consider other ND students. a. Recommendations will be made to the Financial Aid Office by the chair of the nursing department. R. Loretta F. Holub Scholarship Loretta Fern (Hoover) Holub was born February 15, 1930 on the family farmstead in Logan, ND to Ray and Martha Hoover. She graduated from Minot High School in 1947 and graduated from Trinity School of Nursing in She married Lyle Chester Holub

8 at Minot in They lived at Crosby where Loretta worked as a registered nurse at St. Luke s Hospital until 1957 when they moved to Minot where she worked as a registered nurse at Trinity Hospital until her retirement in During Loretta s years of nursing she held head nurse positions on the medical and surgical floors. She also served as House Supervisor prior to becoming head of the emergency room at Trinity. Loretta was very involved in the plans for the major remodeling done to the ER in Loretta was also instrumental in starting Lifeline, a personal medical alert service for seniors in the Minot area. Loretta was a member of the District 2 Nurse s Association and was chosen nurse of the year in She was also the main fundraiser during her many years of membership. Loretta was a heritage Nurse who is one that has worked in nursing more than 40 years. After Loretta retired she continued her nursing profession by working for Portamedic and other insurance agencies performing insurance physicals and drug screens. Loretta loved nursing and always felt she had the best job in the world. This endowment was established in 2010 by Loren Holub to honor his mother. Allocation is based solely on financial need. S. Maloney Scholarship *Awarded to ND residents on basis of financial need, academic excellence, character and citizenship. *At least one half of the awards are made to students enrolled in the nursing, medical technology, radiologic technology curriculum at MSU. *Apply to Financial Aid Office, Minot State University for consideration T. Margaret Bruce Nursing Scholarship Established by a bequest from a Minot resident, Margaret Bruce, because her career in nursing was an important part of her life. Margaret s intent is to provide the means and opportunity for others to pursue similar dreams of careers in this field. a. Full time MSU student in the Nursing program. b. Student must demonstrate a financial need. c. Student must be from one of the following counties: Divide, Williams, McKenzie, Burke, Mountrail, Renville, Ward, Bottineau, McHenry, Sheridan, Wells, Rolette, Pierce, and McLean. d. Recipient must demonstrate good character, citizenship and academic promise. a. Students must apply for this and be selected. Funds will be disbursed to the University in July of each year. The annual disbursement will be awarded to the qualified nursing students for the preceding year. U. Mark Ronde Memorial Scholarship This award was established by relatives and friends of Mark Ronde who died in a tragic accident and who was the husband of a MSU alumnus, Nancy Strong Ronde. Nancy received her Master s degree in nursing and has worked in neonatal intensive care. Her mother was a Board of Regents at MSU.

9 a. Preference is given to an RN returning to school for BSN. b. Cumulative GPA at least 3.0. c. Financial need will be considered. d. Apply to the Department of Nursing. a. Students and faculty may submit names of nominees to be considered by Student-Faculty Affairs Committee and submitted to faculty. V. Minot Moose Lodge Scholarship Awarded to MSU students perusing nursing, radiologic technology, medical technology, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, or pre-pharmacy. a. Awarded to ND residents on basis of financial need, academic excellence, character and citizenship. a. Apply to Financial Aid Office, Minot State University for consideration. W. Nels T and Oline Blikre Scholarship *Awarded to student who is a resident of Mountrail County, with an interest in nursing or teaching and demonstrates financial need. *Apply to Financial Aid Office, Minot State University for consideration. X. Otto and Irene Ella Johnson Endowment Scholarship Scholarships of $100 or more, honoring Irene Ella Johnson, who dedicated her life to her family and to her husband, Otto R. Johnson. a. Older than average student (24 years or older). b. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. c. Must be "caring," supportive, concerned and personable as judged by the faculty. d. Financial need may be a consideration. e. Must be a nursing major who has completed the first group of nursing courses that include a clinical "hands-on" nursing care component. a. Recommendations are made by Nursing Foundations faculty at the completion of each Foundations course; the names are then submitted to Student-Faculty Affairs Committee. b. Nursing Foundations faculty will submit potential recipient names at the end of each spring and fall Nursing Foundations course to ensure fair representation of all sophomore level students. Awards will be allotted to a student from each spring and fall semester group of Nursing Foundations students (two monetary awards per year).

10 Y. PBC Scholarship *Students from the College of Business, College of Education and Human Services or the Department of Nursing. *Apply at Financial Aid Office, Minot State University for consideration. Z. Patrick Kelly Muus Nursing Scholarship Established by his family in his honor, Patrick died in 1994, after a battle with Myelodysplasia. Patrick graduated from MSU in 1981 and continued his education at UND and earned his designation as a certified registered nurse anesthetist. He practiced in Twin Falls, ID until his health deteriorated. a. Full time MSU student enrolled in the College of Education and Health Sciences. b. Student must be a North Dakota resident. c. Student must be planning a career as a CRNA. a. Students and faculty may submit names of nominees to be considered to the Student Faculty Affairs Committee, who will then make a recommendation to the Faculty Committee. AA. Patty Lou Pietsch Trzpuc Memorial Scholarship Established by Dennis J. Trzpuc in memory of his wife, Patty Lou Pietsch Trzpuc, for the benefit of the top nursing student attending Minot State University. a. Four year nursing major. b. Top academic student in the junior year of the nursing program. c. The scholarship is to be awarded and used during the senior year of the nursing program. d. A regularly enrolled full-time MSU student. e. In case of a tie the scholarship will be split between the students. 2. Selection process a. The Junior (Semester 2 or Semester 3) with the highest GPA at the time of selection will be awarded. b. Student-Faculty Affairs Committee will determine eligibility and bring names forward to Faculty Committee. BB. Randy and Pat Burckhard Scholarship *Established by Randy and Pat Burckhard for the benefit of nursing students. *Scholarship is awarded on a quadrennial basis. *Apply at Financial Aid Office, Minot State University for consideration. CC. Dr. Richard Dormont Nursing Scholarship Endowment Dr. Richard E. Dormont was a legendary pediatrician in Minot, ND for 57 years. He retired at the age of 95 and was one of the oldest practicing pediatricians in the United States. He died on July 5, 2010 in Minot following his retirement in May, He was a dedicated pediatrician who devoted his professionalism and lifesaving skills to healing

11 five generations of children from a wide region. In 2004 he estimated he had reached 400,000 patient visits in his lifetime. He was born June, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from the Yale School of Medicine in He was a captain in the army in World War II serving in the South Pacific and completed his service with the rank of Major. Dr. Dormont interned at the Johns Hopkins and taught pediatrics at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He was on the staff of the Kimbro Clinic in Cleburne, Texas before joining Northwest Clinic in Minot in He was a lifelong learner who daily spent hours studying advances in diagnosis and medical treatment. Dr. Dormont had an extensive library and read math for fun, studied philosophy and history, spent weekends bird watching and enjoyed Japanese Haiku poetry. a. Student must be enrolled in the Nursing Program. b. Student must have an interest in pediatrics. c. Student must be from NW North Dakota. d. Student must show financial need. e. Student must maintain excellent scholastic record. f. Student must submit essay of a history of involvement and achievement that benefits the community. DD. Rubbelke Scholarship--Nursing Established in 2000 in memory of Leona Rubbelke who passed away in Leona graduated from St. Joseph s School of Nursing in She received her BSN in 1942 at the University of Minnesota. In 1974, Leona returned to Minot where she taught at MSU. a. Recipient must be working on degree in a health services field. b. Must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate or graduate student. c. Scholarship may be renewed dependent on the student s maintenance of satisfactory academic progress. 2. Selection Process a. Preference will be given to any of Leona Rubbelke s nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, etc. who may apply for scholarship. EE. St. Joseph s Community Foundation Scholarship The St. Joseph s Community Foundation Scholarship honoring Sister Mabel Meng was established to award five $2000 scholarships to benefit MSU nursing students. Sister Mabel Meng received her nursing degree in She worked as a nurse and was also an instructor at the St. Joseph s Diploma School of Nursing. In 1969 Mabel was offered a position at Minot State, the first Director of Nursing. She continued in that role through a. Students must be from the counties of Bottineau, Burke, McHenry, McLean, Mountrail, Pierce, Renville, Rolette, Sheridan, Ward or Wells; or evidence an interest to work in one of the eleven counties. b. Students must be enrolled in the Nursing Program 2. Selection Process

12 a. Academic performance, financial need, financial circumstance, family status and other factors determined by the nursing scholarship committee. FF. Tracy Petersen Snyder Endowed Scholarship Established in memory of Tracy Petersen Snyder, a graduate of the MSU Department of Nursing, by her husband, Donald R. Snyder, Jr. and her parents, Lawrence and Vida Mae Petersen. This scholarship is to benefit nursing students accepted into the nursing major at Minot State University. a. Junior or Senior status in the nursing program at the time of selection. b. Demonstrates excellence in scholarship. c. The scholarship is not to be given solely on the basis of need. d. Display attributes of being a dedicated, qualified student of professional nursing. e. Consideration may be given to attributes reflecting Tracy s professional skill and interest in the nursing care of children. a. Students and faculty may submit names for consideration to the Student Faculty Affairs Committee who will make recommendations to the Faculty Committee. GG. William N. Skip Shirley Memorial Nursing Scholarship Endowment Skip Shirley was the father of current Minot State President, Dr. Steve Shirley. Skip passed away in October, 2012, following a very long battle with Multiple Myeloma (a cancer of the blood). During his many years battling the disease, he treated regularly at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Throughout his many years of treatment, Skip was always fond of his nurses and so appreciated the great care and service they delivered. He had terrific admiration and respect for the nursing profession. Skip was also a native of Minot (graduate of Minot High School) and maintained a great affection for his hometown throughout his life. The annual allocation from the fund will support scholarships to be awarded through the Financial Aid Office on the basis of the following criteria: a. Recipient must be a graduate of a North Dakota high school. b. Recipient must be a Nursing major at Minot State. HH. Yvonne Falstad Hoover Yvonne Lorraine Falstad Hoover was born November 28, 1929 in Garrison, ND on Thanksgiving Day. She was delivered by Dr. Agnes Stucke, a woman who was married to the town physician. Garrison did not have a hospital at that time, so she was born at her grandparent s home. The Stucke s were Yvonne s long time family physicians and encouraged Yvonne to attend nursing school. Yvonne graduated salutatorian from Garrison High School in 1947 and attended Trinity School of Nursing where she graduated with honors in That same year she married her classmate Loretta Holub s brother, Melvin Hoover. They made their home in Minot where she worked

13 occasionally for St. Joseph s Hospital and Northwest Clinic physicians and some private duty. Melvin and Yvonne had seven children, so most of her nursing experience was put to good use at home and for the neighborhood children and friends. Their seven children are Stephen Hoover (deceased), Eugene Hoover, Ford Hoover, Melanie Cathy Carrie Folkert, Spencer Hoover and De Ne Kurpiel. Eugene and Spencer both married nurses. St. Paul s Lutheran Church was an important part of their family life and still is today, 60 years later. Allocation is based solely on financial need. II. Roger Drobash Nursing Education Scholarship Awarded to a relative of a current or former member of either Trench Rat Dugout No. 436 or Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 4. JJ. Others: a. Amvet Sad Sacks of ND: Application can be picked up from the Department of Nursing. b. Nursing Student Loan (NSL): Apply at Financial Aid Office, Minot State University. c. ND Nursing Scholarship Loan Program: Apply to the ND Board of Nursing, Bismarck, ND. d. ND Nurses Association: Apply to NDNA.
