Chair s Message The Many Faces of Long Term Care By Wanda Meade KAHCF Board Chair The residents come first, but you cannot talk about long term care without mentioning their families, our caregivers, our vendors and the communities we serve. If someone were to paint a picture good experience for the resident and depicting the faces of long term their family. In addition, it is not just one care, they would likely paint elderly day our caregivers do this. It is every residents. day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year in While true that we wouldn t be here if it weren t for our residents, we providers also know that the faces of long term care would be more than residents. The residents come first, but you cannot talk about long term care without mentioning their families, our caregivers, our vendors and the communities we serve. If we were to paint a picture depicting the faces of long term care ourselves, we would start with the residents in the middle. They are our sole reason for being in this profession. Our residents truly need us in their most vulnerable of times, whether it is recovering from surgery and rehabilitating a knee or hip, or because they can no longer care for themselves at home. Even the picture of the residents themselves is changing. Instead of the elderly resident, many of the residents in our facilities are younger and there to receive rehabilitation after an illness or surgery. Many of these residents are able to return home and resume their normal lifestyle. Branch out from the middle and you would find a picture of our employees the residents caregivers who give tirelessly providing quality care to those in their charge. And it is not just the nursing staff, but everybody in the building. Every single employee has a role in providing quality care and a rain or snow or heat. When weather wrecks havoc in the Commonwealth, our facilities cannot just shut down. After all, we are home for our residents while they are with us. The residents families are another vital piece in this picture of long term care. They have entrusted us to care for their loved ones and they expect a high quality of care from us. We make them part of our family by including them in conversations about the plan of care for their loved one and involving them in activities and daily life in our facilities. For as long as their loved one is with is and oftentimes after they leave they are part of our family. These family members, in turn, become some of our biggest advocates in our communities. Our vendor members make up another part of the long term care portrait, for without their support and products, our jobs would be almost impossible to do. From food service providers to medical suppliers, these vendors may stand in the background of our daily efforts but are no less an important part. Imagine making a meal without the food they deliver or working with our residents in rehab without the equipment and therapists. ts. The final part of this picture is the communities muni we serve. e. Long term care facilities are located in every Kentucky county, providing care, jobs and an important tax base to their local governments. In many areas, the long term care provider is the largest employer in the county next to the school system. Just as important is the social role our facilities fill in their respective communities. They are the hub of activity not just for our residents, but the whole community as school children, churches and other groups participate in daily life in the facility. These are the faces of long term care. Taken together, they make a portrait of our importance to the lives of our communities and how many lives we touch every day. On behalf of the Association, soc thank you for being part of this painting we call the faces of long term care. 6

President s Message Our Profession Is Important to Kentucky By Ruby Jo Lubarsky KAHCF President But our story is even bigger. Our industry employs more than 30,000 well-trained professionals and has an overall economic impact of more than $2.5 billion. The Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities is proud to represent the people and organizations that care for the more than 23,000 residents who depend on us to provide a safe and caring environment. Our facilities serve the young and old alike, both those who expect to recover fully as well as those in need of extended long term care services. A nursing facility s purpose is to help individuals meet their daily physical, social, medical, and psychological needs and to return home whenever possible. Our first priority is our residents. We understand that in order to provide quality care to residents we must promote the type of environments that accommodate the best possible patient care. The long term care industry is heavily regulated and we work diligently with federal, state and local officials to ensure the proper standards of care are met or exceeded. We are proud of our well trained staff and take pride in the work and service they provide. That s why Kentucky consistently ranks above the national average for quality of care standards, compliance and staffing. But our story is even bigger. Our industry employs more than 30,000 well-trained professionals and has an overall l economic c impact of more than $2.5 billion. According cordi to a recent en report released by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living, our industry has helped create or sustain over 58,000 jobs (both direct and indirect) resulting in $1.8 billion in annual wages. The long term care industry has also contributed more than $213 million in tax revenue to Kentucky. In many communities, the nursing facility is not only the largest employer, but the jobs are in highest demand. Inside this issue, you will meet former Dawson Springs Mayor Ross Workman. Mayor Workman touts the benefits of having facilities in this small Hopkins County town and how the benefits from the two long term care providers there trickle down economically and socially to improve the quality of life for all Dawson Springs residents. This issue of CareLink shows the many faces of long term care. You will meet residents whose quality of life improved dramatically just from being around other people e after they moved into a Bowling Green en facility. You will hear the gratitude of a daughter for the caregivers who tended to her mother. Those same caregivers recognized that her mother was having a stroke and, thanks to their skill and care, prolonged her mom s life. You will also hear from caregivers at our member facilities whose love and devotion to the residents demonstrates just how committed they are to caring for our residents. These are just a few examples of the many different people long term care providers touch every day. Not only should we take great pride in the world-class care that we provide for our residents, but we should also remember the economic benefit we provide for Kentucky. Our facilities create professional careers for many Kentuckians and provide terrific working environments in every county in Kentucky. The long term care industry is good for Kentucky because we provide terrific care while making an economic omic impact. Thank you for all that you do. 7

The Faces of Long Term Care A Glimpse Inside The Faces of Long Term Care 8 When gears aren t grinding, locking or screeching to a halt, it is easy to forget the amount of effort that goes into making them work together in harmony. Each gear has to precisely mesh with all the ones around it, which can only happen if every single one is in the right place at the right time. That is what it is like in the long term care profession, only the gears are the people and vendors involved in making sure our residents receive the best care possible. They include the families, the caregivers, the vendors and the communities we serve. Read these personal stories to see glimpses inside these gears and to see not only what keeps them moving but the benefits this movement has on everyone involved.

The Faces of Long Term Care RESIDENT PERSPECTIVE Close Enough to Home Contributed by Resident Vallie Roark, Administrator Jonathan McGuire and Activities Director Nolly Costello Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bowling Green, Ky. My name is Vallie Roark and I have been living at Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for about two years now. Prior to living here, I lived at home by myself for a year after my husband had passed away. Those days were the loneliest days I have ever experienced in my life. I mostly kept house and occasionally would sit outside, as my husband and I had done in the past. But I felt like I was smothering. I wasn t taking care of myself like I should have been doing and came down with a really bad kidney infection, which landed me in the hospital due to not drinking enough liquids. I spent around a week in the hospital and was transferred to Greenwood because I wasn t well enough to go home at that point. When I arrived I thought I had died and gone to heaven. There were people everywhere, to meet and to talk to. That meant the world to me because I love to be with people. I even got a roommate. Her name is Peggy and we are like two peas in a pod. I take care of her and she takes care of me. Living here is a pleasure and I have not once thought about returning home. I am always busy doing some kind of activity provided by the center or I keep busy in my room with crocheting or chit chatting with my neighbors. I never again have to worry about my health and the best part is I never ever have to cook again. Don t get me wrong, I enjoyed cooking but cooking for one is no fun. The meals here are great and I have plenty of choices to choose from. Everyone here has been as cordial to me as they could be and I couldn t ask for anything better. I love my new home and family at Greenwood. Dramatic Changes Administrator Jonathan McGuire said the change in Vallie s health and quality of life has been dramatic since coming to Greenwood. She is a happy person, open and friendly to everyone, he said. She was a bit timid at first, but she has definitely come out of that. She visits other residents and is a welcoming committee for new residents on her hallway. Vallie Roark (standing) and her friend and roommate at Greenwood, Peggy White. Her daughter loves the change she has seen in her mom. She says that Vallie is enjoying life and doing the things she liked to do before her husband died and she became ill. 9

The Faces of Long Term Care FAMILY PERSPECTIVE The Heritage Staff Saved Mom s Life Contributed by Donna Sams (daughter) and Administrator Cathy Willis, The Heritage Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility, Corbin, Ky. My mother, Phyllis Bowling, was admitted to The Heritage in August She had lived independently at home for as long as she could safely. Deciding to put her in a nursing home was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. My mother was my best friend. I saw her almost every day of my life and it was so hard to see her lose the ability to live alone and do the things she loved doing. It really did not take me long to realize that as hard as the decision was, I made the right choice to take her to The Heritage. She fit right in and was happy in her new home. She enjoyed the activities, rarely missing any of them. She actually was busier after admission than she was the last few months in her home. She came to love the staff and they loved her. They became an extension of our family. They must really know her well to have been able to detect the problem so early. They saved her life. Doctor at Central Baptist Hospital She did very well for several years, but in 2011, she began to decline somewhat. That was, after all, seven years later! One evening, the nurse called me and told me that mother just was not right, that she had called her doctor and they Phyllis gave her admiring approval for Crystal Brewer s gown. Crystal and her husband, Josh Warman, both employees of The Heritage, were married in the facility s courtyard. Phyllis and other residents, staff, families and friends attended the ceremony. Donna Sams with her mother, Phyllis Bowling were sending mother to the emergency room. I was to meet her there. Upon arriving there, it was apparent that mother was having a stroke. Fortunately, she got there in time for the ER staff to administer tpa (tissue plasminogen activator). The severity of the stroke, however, did necessitate her being sent on to Lexington to Central Baptist Hospital. While there, the doctor told me that he was amazed that the nursing home staff was able to get mother to the ER in time for the shot. He said, They must really know her well to have been able to detect the problem so early. They saved her life. He didn t tell me anything that I didn t already know. While at Central Baptist, mother drove the nurse crazy, wanting to go home. When the nurse asked her where home was, she always answered The Heritage. Upon her return to The Heritage, she did very well much better than expected. She did, after several weeks though, develop complications and passed away on November 19, The staff at The Heritage never gave up on her and fought to save her. Everyone at The Heritage is like family to me. We listed them as family in her obituary and named them honorary pall bearers at her funeral. I will never forget them. 10

The Faces of Long Term Care CAREGIVER PERSPECTIVE More Than A Job. A Calling to Serve. Contributed by Cynthia Foster, Superior Care Home, Inc., Paducah, Ky. Each day in nursing facilities across Kentucky, compassionate professionals care for one of our most precious resources our seniors. With knowledge, skill, commitment and a passion for service, they heal, enhance health and optimize quality of life. While some staff may come and go, for many a career in long term care is a calling for service and quality care that becomes their mindset, culture and way of life. It is the stability, experience, expertise and selfless service of those individuals that creates communities where residents thrive. Facilities become places of enduring relationships, generous smiles and fulfilled lives. And lives of staff are enriched and blessed. As the lives of residents, families and staff become intertwined on a new journey, hope is restored, lives are renewed and joy is found in the genuine care and concern of extended family. While there are many stories that could be shared reflecting the faces of long term care professionals, a nurse and nursing assistant share how they have met their call to service. My greatest sense of accomplishment and satisfaction comes from knowing I have a staff who has done what each of them is called to do each day provide nothing less that superior care. Doralyn Warren individuals on the team give their best, she leads by personal example. Through the years, she has learned that to provide excellent care, she must listen, communicate and educate every day with her staff, and each resident and family member. Despite her busy schedule and responsibilities, she is often at a resident s bedside or talking with a family member about what might be the smallest of concerns. She understands that no task, issue or concern is too small to have her undivided attention. CAREGIVER PERSPECTIVE continued on page 13 Doralyn Warren, RN Superior Care Home s Director of Nursing, Doralyn Warren, began her nursing career in a hospital setting. Following a break after the birth of her son, she accepted a nursing position at Superior Care Home, motivated primarily by a curiosity about long term care. She quickly found that caring for the elderly within a facility committed to quality care ignited her passion. That was 34 years ago. I found my niche, and with each passing year, my passion for serving the elderly has grown, she said. Doralyn s dedication to serving the elderly is steadfast. As Director of Nursing, she is responsible for leading a nursing team in providing quality care. She not only expects that all Doralyn Warren, RN; Dr. Richard Smith, MD (Medical Director); Nelle Kester, Resident Reimbursement policy changes. Hefty tax repercussions. A major missed opportunity. 13 The Faces of Long Term Care CAREGIVER PERSPECTIVE continued from page 11 Often residents will express their appreciation for the care they receive. While it is gratifying to hear those accolades, my greatest sense of accomplishment and satisfaction comes from knowing I have a staff who has done what each of them is called to do each day provide nothing less that superior care, she said. I have found that helping individuals on a new journey in life has blessed my life and career. Each day I learn something new through the life experiences, knowledge and wisdom of our residents. do whatever is necessary to ensure the residents needs are met. Her reputation as an extraordinary nursing assistant among residents, families, peers and students is the result of her serving residents with skill, integrity, compassion and respect. She sees each task as an opportunity to be better than the day before rather than a routine. You can count on her not only to be present, but to be present each day with an extraordinary sense of responsibility, commitment to give her best and a positive attitude. Her focus is clear the resident. As Teresa reflects on her career as a nursing assistant, she thoughtfully responds: I love helping people. It s who I am. It s my calling. Knowing that I have a part in making our residents happy and being there when I m needed is rewarding to me. I love our residents and everything they have to give to me. Each day as I listen to their stories, they teach me valuable lessons about life. You must truly care about people and take the time to relate to them as the special individuals they are. 15 The Faces of Long Term Care COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVE Long Term Care Facilities a Vital Part of Community Life Contributed by Ross Workman Former Mayor of Dawson Springs, Ky. Our little town in Hopkins County knows first-hand the importance of long term care facilities in a community. Dawson Springs has two long term care providers in Dawson Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center and Tradewater Health and Rehabilitation, and they are true neighbors and key parts of our community. I can truly say that having these facilities in our community, with the leadership and skills that they possess, is something that Dawson Springs is very proud of. The impact of having long term care facilities in Dawson Springs are tremendous, particularly economically. The facilities are the second largest employer in the city, and the economic impact they provide is significant. They provide a stable tax base that helps fund the city s responsibilities. There s Ross Workman also a trickle-down effect from their employees spending money at local restaurants, shopping and using local contractors when possible. The residents definitely win from having these facilities in our town. It makes it easier for visitors to meet the residents in the two facilities, since they don t have to travel out of town. Also, the opportunities for people to volunteer are made so much easier by having not one, but two, facilities right here in town. These volunteers bring so much joy to the residents with their songs, crafts and smiles, and the added bonus of our own schools means children get to spend precious time with our elderly citizens who have given their lives to our community. The quality of life at the facilities is very good. Each resident is treated with respect and dignity. Their needs are addressed and taken care of to the best of the staff s abilities. The management and staff at the facilities are top-notch and truly care about the well being of the residents and their families. And by having these jobs in our own community, Dawson Springs Health & Rehabilitation Center is one of two long term care facilities in Dawson Spring. The other is Tradewater Health and Rehabilitation. many of the employees are taking care of their relatives, friends and neighbors. I can truly say that having these facilities in our community, with the leadership and skills that they possess, is something that Dawson Springs is very proud of. The facilities present themselves in a very welcoming manner. The management and staff are always very kind to the people who come through their doors. Whether it is a family member of a resident or members of the community coming in to present a program, everyone is always welcomed with a genuine smile. Dawson Springs definitely would not be the same without them as part of our community. 330 FREDERICA STREET OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY PHONE Jeffrey W.
