1 Profiles of facilities, staff, volunteers, families and residents in Kentucky s long term care facilities. A Quality Journey was the theme of the 2015 Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities Annual Meeting, and the Quality Awards Banquet honored those caregivers, volunteers and supporters who build the Foundation of Quality Care in their buildings. Top 10 Caregivers, Nurses and Supportive Caregivers were recognized, as well as other honorees. Tracks provided education sessions on Life Safety, Quality Assurance programs, social media and marketing, and therapy practices. Winter 2016 The staff of Wolfe County Health and in Campton accepts their Facility of the Year trophy. Administrator Amy Prater shares her thoughts of what being named Facility of the Year means to the facility, residents and staff. Facility of the Year Wolfe County Health and Campton Nestled in the Red River Gorge area, Wolfe County Health and celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style by winning the Association s top honor based on an onsite visit and a customer satisfaction survey. Three other facilities were competing for Facility of the Year. The construction of the facility 25 years ago grew out of a need and vision by county residents for a place that could provide care for loved ones without having to travel outside of the county. That community bond is still vital today, as the facility is an active participant in several local events, and the employees exhibit that mission to caring for their neighbors every day. Receiving the KAHCF Facility of the Year award gave my staff recognition for the excellent and consistent care they provide our residents on a daily basis. It was extra special because this year we celebrated our 25th Anniversary, said administrator Amy Prater. It is also a once-in-a-career opportunity that represents an appreciation for our high standard of quality care. Winning this award is an ultimate honor in our profession and source of pride for our small community. of Long Term Care

2 Administrator of the Year Ruby Pigman Knott County Health, Hindman Anyone can be a boss but it takes someone special to be a leader and that defines Ruby. Having worked her way up from a nurse aide to administrator, she continues to make daily rounds. Ruby also knows many of the residents and their families personally. She takes those relationships to heart treating each resident as her own family just like her own mother who was cared for in the facility Administrator of the Year Paula Strunk, KAHCF Board Chair Debra Finneran and 2015 Administrator of the Year Ruby Pigman 2015 Director of Nursing of the Year Mary Arms and KAHCF Board Chair Debra Finneran Director of Nursing of the Year Mary Arms Mountain Manor of Paintsville A can-do DON who sets an example for her staff on caring, Mary personifies Mountain Manor s mission of providing the finest in daily living in a nurturing environment inspiring our residents to live life to the fullest. Mary has implemented a variety of programs including the very effective teddy bear turning and repositioning program. KAHCF 2nd Vice Chair Chris Page and Dr. Steve Morton Medical Director of the Year Dr. Steve Morton Corbin and Hillcrest health and rehabilitation centers Dr. Morton worked diligently with both facilities to decrease re-hospitalizations and use of anti-psychotics among residents. He reviewed each resident s medication list and collaborated with other physicians and hospitals. His practice also hired a nurse practitioner to make regular visits with residents to check for changes in their condition. The result is better continuity of care with residents reaping the benefits. 2 Heroes Winter

3 Better Life Marian Hayden Cull & Hayden, Frankfort She is a go-to person for the Association and many of its members when seeking legal advice on Certificate of Need process or regulatory matters. Marian s years of experience make her a strong ally for facilities. She is also a frequent presenter and develops educational sessions to help members stay abreast of recent changes. KAHCF Second Vice Chair Chris Page and Norman McKnight Volunteer of the Year Norman McKnight Woodland Oaks, Ashland Norman waited patiently for six months after Woodland Oaks opened for a spot to volunteer. Sunday school was the perfect fit and he quickly became part of the Woodland family. He has been a spiritual leader for residents and staff alike, offering prayers, teaching and baptisms. Volunteer of the Year Joy Bittner River Valley Nursing Home, Butler At 80 years young, Joy organizes and coordinates the entire volunteer program at River Valley Nursing Home. She takes her role seriously as coordinator of the 64 volunteers, but her first order of business is welcoming all new residents and their families - complete with newsletters and calendars to showcase the many activities available. She then follows up by assisting the new residents to and from activities and helping them acclimate to their new home. Volunteer of the Year Jessica Simmons Georgetown Manor, Louisville Jessica was already a familiar face at Georgetown Manor since her mother worked there as an LPN. But on Jessica s Senior Prom night, her mom had a stroke and eventually became a resident at the facility. Since then, Jessica has been there every day during the summer and as often as her class schedule permits serving residents snacks, dying Easter Eggs and assisting in resident outings. Through it all, Jessica has handled everything with maturity beyond her years. KAHCF Second Vice Chair Chris Page and Jessica Simmons Heroes Winter

4 Public Relations Award (Newsletter) Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation, Owingsville An Exciting Place to Live is the phrase that graces the cover of the quarterly newsletter that is sent to all families, local churches and businesses, and other places throughout Bath County. The newsletter profiles volunteers, residents, staff and events showcasing the important things going on at Ridgeway and inviting the public to come be a part of it. Priscilla King Public Relations Award (website) Nazareth Home, Louisville Nazareth Home s website provides easy access to everything you would need to know about volunteering, residing or working there. Prospective residents and families can learn about which Hall best fits their need and schedule a tour. Volunteers can fill out an application to help, and the latest news and events are available. Friends and family can even send an ecard to their loved one. Michael Buckman 2015 KAHCF QUALITY AWARD WINNERS Facility of the Year Wolfe County Health and Campton Facility of the Year Finalists Boyd Nursing and Ashland Essex Nursing and Louisville Morganfield Nursing and KAHCF First Vice Chair Terry Skaggs and General Manager of Dining Services Linda Wagner Public Relations Award (Community Outreach) Sam Swope Care Center at Masonic Home Louisville Masonic Home s Dining Service Department began a Thanksgiving Dinner to Your Door program providing holiday meals to families. With the help of a local church, a Masonic Lodge, staff and several residents and their families, the program has grown from feeding 25 families to 80 families. The residents get completely involved in the effort, packing the individual family s box in the dining room. This is what the holidays are all about helping your neighbors, said one resident summing up the satisfaction of helping. Winter 2016 Photograph of the Year Oakmont Manor, Flatwoods Turning 100 is quite an accomplishment and worth celebrating, but when you have not one, not two, but THREE residents 100 or OLDER, you need to celebrate. That was the case at Oakmont Manor when Clover Barber, in the center of the picture, was turning 100. Just so she didn t get too proud though, 101-year-old Goldie Curry, wanted to let Clover know she had already Been There. And 102-year-old Shirley Nicely just had to add Done That.
