2 Summary of the exchange history Inspired by and developed along with the Asia-Pacific Military Nursing Exchange starting with 5 member countries in 2007 An agreement btw then-heads of each delegating group, Gp Cpt Supit Prasopsil and BG Hae-kyung Shin, in 2010, to exchange of students and faculty Official permission by authorities of both countries in 2011

13 Exploration of the cross-cultural experience Question raised by students Why some of our beliefs were the same, and some were different, and why we react differently from our counterpart even though both of the groups are educated in military nursing academy of similar types? Refined as the research question How did the student nurses of Royal Thai Air Force Nursing College (AFSNs) and the cadets of Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy (Cadets) perceive the learning experiences and the cultural difference from the exchange program?

14 Exploration of the cross-cultural experience Purpose - To explain learning experiences of the AFSNs and Cadets in relation to the cross cultural experience of the exchange program Definition of cross-cultural experience - An experience achieved through interaction with individuals from different backgrounds - Focus of this study: experience and perception on training strategies, cultural differences and training materials Methods - Purposive sampling of 12 AFSNs & 12 Cadets - Data collected through structured interview and journal writing in Analyzed by content analysis

We will be nursing officers in the military and work for the improvement of disaster preparedness It was a good opportunity to observe their classes and practicing environment because we are studying the same major, Nursing

17 Exploration of the cross-cultural experience Findings 2: Cultural differences KAFNA cadets command and control system is Seniors work harder than juniors AFSNs Senior cadets run more than junior cadets in the physical training period. Like today they woke up early in the morning and ran about 8 miles longer than juniors Senior cadets are very strict to the rule and regulation. They always do the right thing in order to be a role model for their juniors

18 Exploration of the cross-cultural experience Findings 2: Cultural differences AFSNs KAFNA cadets food and eating habit is More vegetable and less meat I am very pleased with the meal because it s tasty and nutritious. Everyday they have fresh milk to drink and I think their foods are well-prepared Since I arrived, I have observed that every meal is served with vegetable, I seldom see red meat, but still find some fired chicken. Its taste is not too salty and too sweet

19 Exploration of the cross-cultural experience Findings 2: Cultural differences Cadets AFSNs command and control system is love and respect The AFSNs have breakfast together after morning roll call, pray together before the meal, and finish their meal together. I witnessed there was a clear hierarchy of ranks but, at the same time, I saw love and respect among them I think their lives are based on gratitude, high self-esteem, and wellestablished identity as a Thai citizen

The simulator can talk and respond to nursing care. If we have one like this, it would be good Learning materials of KAFNA are very modernized and complicate. The instructors can change the simulators conditions according to the quality of nursing care provided and nurses decision making during the given situation

23 Future exchange It is a continuing and evolving exchange A Cooperation Agreement will be signed soon Based on the document, the exchange program will be more promoted and expanded
