9 Developing A Social Strategy Start simple! Have a clear purpose in mind for how social networks will integrate with daily processes (including learning). Start by identifying where employees already communication/collaborate/learn with or from each other. Determine where social software can augment existing collaboration. 11 Example Implementation Paths Option #1: The PILOT Build a comprehensive community around single, highvalue learning program using all functions. Provides easy entry. Drives deep participation. Add users over time. Option #2: The WEDGE* Use only one function to serve a single purpose (such as Q&A) across entire audience. Spreads exposure to system rapidly. Drives wide participation. Add uses over time. (-) May not self-sustain. (-) May not have enough applicability beyond scope of project to spawn further use. (-) May not adequately prepare for using each feature. 12 Best Practices Develop a strong governance model. Focus on developing a selfpolicing internal culture. Utilize moderation functionality in online blogs and forums. Identify leaders and SMEs to serve as community moderators, instigators, and stewards. Don t forget to provide this group training in these roles. Place thoughtful limits (as needed) on content authoring, sourcing, and rating. Use version control schemes. Publish clear Safe Harbor Statements. Do not allow anonymity. Encourage freshness and frequency with content updates. Provide incentives for utilization and good behavior. Keep social tools focused on specific projects, initiatives, or business issues.
