1 TM MUSIC EDUCATION INNOVATOR AWARD CALL FOR APPLICATIONS Give A Note Foundation invites proposals for the Music Education Innovator Award that demonstrate school music programs led by creative music educators utilizing innovative and sustainable strategies in non-traditional or traditional secondary music courses that attract students not typically enrolled in music education courses, in efforts to increase access to music education through diversity in curriculum and approach. Thank you to founding sponsor, the CMA Foundation. Awards will be granted to schools with programs that have significant potential for utilizing $4,000 grants to build upon programmatic successes to date, in efforts to create lasting change in a school or district. Minimally intrusive reporting requirements will be developed to allow for other schools and districts to learn from the resulting models, with associated music educators serving as Innovative Ambassadors to the field. FINANCIAL GRANTS $4,000 grants to school music programs led by creative music educators who are utilizing innovative instructional strategies in non-traditional or traditional secondary music courses that attract students not typically enrolled in music education courses $20,000 total amount to be distributed over 5 grants during this initial cycle PROJECT SCOPE & CRITERIA As stated above, the purpose of this funding cycle is to identify school music programs led by creative music educators utilizing innovative and sustainable strategies in non-traditional or traditional secondary music courses that attract students not typically enrolled in music education courses, in efforts to increase access to music education through diversity in curriculum and approach. Awards will be granted to schools with programs that have significant potential for utilizing $4,000 grants to build upon programmatic successes to date, in efforts to create lasting change in a school or district. Innovative, in this context, means reflecting an instructional and/or organizational approach to music instruction that is new for the school system in which the program is to be instituted. That is, a program could be considered innovative if it takes lessons learned from a different school or school district and applies that idea in a new context for example, the context of an urban as opposed to suburban district, to a different grade level, or to a set of students not formerly served by the approach. 2 Sustainable, in this case, means reflecting a high likelihood that the applicant will be able to use the support offered to put in place an innovative program that survives the grant period, thus bringing lasting change to the school and to the student population served. OTHER POTENTIAL ELEMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION MIGHT INCLUDE: Community or parental involvement in a program Funding directly resulting in an increase in programmatic enrollment Replicable management of a program A program creating opportunity for student leadership skills to be utilized A program demonstrating diversity of enrollment in any of the following areas: 1. Students without a formal music education background 2. Students trained in non-traditional instrumentation 3. Utilizing culturally diverse repertoire A program providing opportunity for students to experience real world applications A program supporting the concept of literacy growth A program demonstrating arts integration in any of the following areas: math, science, sports, history, other ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Applying schools must be supported by public funds. Applications must be completed in their entirety. APPLICATION GUIDELINES Applications must adhere to the project scope and criteria to warrant consideration. All applications must be completed and submitted prior to 12:01 AM ET on April 1, There will be no exceptions. KEY DATES Applications will be accepted and reviewed beginning February 15, 2018, with a close date of March 31, Juried Committee will convene April 5 April 12, Announcement of awardees will take place on April 19, One music educator from each grant recipient school will be honored at the 2018 CMA Music Teachers of Excellence Dinner in Nashville, TN, on May 8, 2018, and will present on their school s program to attendees at the 2018 NAfME National Conference in Dallas, TX, on November 11-14, 2018 (all-expense paid). 3 REPORTING & AMBASSADOR ROLE Minimally intrusive reporting requirements will be developed to allow for other districts or schools to learn from the resulting models; these requirements will involve tracking of associated metrics widely used across school programs, including grade averages, attendance, disciplinary referrals, and potential measures of social/emotional learning. Each program will be required to submit a final report including a) specific ways that program goals were met or not met, b) unexpected results or unanticipated challenges, c) future plans for the program, and d) suggestions for bringing the program to scale in the district or in other districts across the nation. These awards, the results of the programs funded by the awards, and the associated music educators (Innovative Ambassadors) will be leveraged to build the knowledge of the music education field regarding varied approaches through: Social media Linking to events, including the 2018 CMA Music Teachers of Excellence Dinner and 2018 NAfME National Conference in Dallas Participation as mentors and providers of professional development on NAfME s Amplify Online All-Member Community FURTHER INFORMATION For questions regarding the Music Education Innovator Award, please contact Ashley Wales at info@giveanote.org MUSIC EDUCATION INNOVATOR AWARD 3

7 QUESTION #8 Music literacy is no longer simply about reading musical notation. In today s world, a musically literate person can create, perform, and respond to music, in addition to being able to make connections to the other arts and disciplines outside of the arts, whether or not the musical encounters involve notation. Please explain how your program supports the concept of literacy growth. Has your program helped your students understand and engage with music? Does your program utilize music literacy by creating, performing, responding, or connecting? 9 LEGAL INFORMATION LOBBYING No part of a Give A Note Foundation grant shall be used for any activity intended to influence a member of Congress or state legislature to favor or oppose any legislation. INELIGIBLE ACTIVITIES The Give A Note Foundation does not fund: costs of parties, receptions, fund-raising benefits, etc. endowments, capital campaigns activities that are primarily religious in purpose any activity that can be viewed as discriminatory in nature or intent, including activities restricted to sub-groups of students or parents based on ethnicity, race, gender, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF GIVE A NOTE FOUNDATION SUPPORT In all published material regarding the particular activity supported, acknowledgment must be made that the activity is partially supported by a grant from the Give A Note Foundation. This acknowledgment should be included in programs, print and online newsletters, educational materials, brochures, posters, news releases, web sites, catalogues, and videos. Upon receipt of a grant from GAN, appropriate, camera-ready logos and materials, including a draft press release announcing your award, will be provided. GRANT CONTRACT Each grant application must be signed by an individual with the authority to act on behalf of the applicant organization or school. A signed application form is the applicant s agreement to do what is described in the application and to comply with the Grant Conditions contained in the application form. When the Give A Note Foundation awards a grant, a letter is sent to the applicant with the payment schedule for that grant. Major changes in activities, personnel, or budget must be approved in advance by GAN in writing. REPORTING REQUIREMENTS The Give A Note Foundation requires a final report on each grant within 30 days of the end of the grant period, and no later than June 1, Final report forms, if required, can be found on the Give A Note Foundation Website. Each grantee must maintain accurate financial records for any activity supported by GAN funds. The Foundation or its authorized representative shall have access to these records upon request.
