We were privileged to have Ms. Stewart as our speaker for the July 2010 Board Surprise Meeting and are looking forward to January s presentation titled Ten Commandments of a Good Organization. ABWA Mission Statement To bring together business women of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition. 2 P a g e 2 PRESIDENT S CORNER The La Luz Vision Statement Within the next five years, La Luz will be a Best Practice Level I chapter and have a reputation in the community for Empowering our Membership through Education and leadership. New Mexico Flag Salute I salute the flag of the State of New Mexico and the Zia symbol of perfect friendship among united cultures. ABWA Proud Code of Conduct 1. All members will serve as goodwill ambassadors for ABWA 2. Members will not allow their personal beliefs and convictions to interfere with the representation of ABWA s mission 3. Amen President s Message Dear La Luz Chapter Members, It s time to start our new year. We are going to have a wonderful year. We have some wonderful speakers scheduled for this year. Be sure to invite your family, friends and business associates to attend a meeting. Please remember, if you are a member and you RSVP to a meeting, but are not able to attend, you will need to pay for your meal anyway. You can mail your check to JoAnn Torres, La Luz Treasurer. JoAnn s address is in the committee reports section. Regional Conference will be in Santa Fe this year. Please let me know if you are planning to attend. It would be great to have all of our members there. There is also volunteer opportunities available, contact Kerri Crarven at KCraven@abwa.org if you would like to volunteer. Area Council received a very nice Thank you from the family that we adopted during the holidays. I want to thank everyone for their generosity. We changed a families life that day. 4 P a g e 4 Committee Square Woman of the Year and Top Ten Business Woman of ABWA- Could This Be You? WE WANT YOU! It s time for LaLuz to recognize exceptional achievements in our ABWA group through nominating a Woman of the Year and a Top Ten Business Woman of ABWA. The Woman of the Year award is given to a member who embodies the ABWA mission through their local chapter involvement: Leadership, education, networking support and national recognition. The Top Ten Business Woman of ABWA award is a national recognition for exceptional achievements in not only their ABWA local chapter but also in their personal life encompassing both their profession and their community serving as a role model for the members. To be an eligible candidate the member must: Be in good standing in the organization by having both their national and local dues paid. Be a member of ABWA for at least three years as of May 15, Be a member of the nominating chapter for at least one year as of May 15, Complete the application paperwork and have it signed by one of three people: Nominating Committee Representatives: Holly or Marlene; or the President of La Luz Chapter, MyChelle Andrews. Submit the completed and signed application to either Holly or Marlene by the March 10, 2011 board meeting. Application packets will be available from Holly at the January 27, 2011chapter meeting. Please Holly at hollys@swcp.com for an application if you re unable to attend the meeting. We wholeheartedly encourage the following eligible members to apply. Please encourage your fellow members to apply. Express your appreciation for their contributions and encourage them to complete the application. By applying you will be helping our chapter remain in good standing as a Best Practices chapter. Past Top 10 nominees may be nominated even if nominated in the past. Past Top 10 recipients may not apply for that award again. Woman of the Year award recipients may win the local Woman of the Year award more than once. For those of you who have not yet become eligible, we invite you to review the blank application forms so you may prepare to be a strong candidate in the future. Both applications are looking for Leadership involvement in your chapter, offices held, committee chair positions and/or committee involvement. Major contributions to your chapter, your education, continuing education and any ABWA Continuing Ed Credits earned. Have you completed any of the courses offered for free on WIN? You can still log on and do that! Have you attended any of the ABWA District and/or National conferences? The candidates will be judged on a point system as outlined in WIN by the national organization. A panel of five of your peers will choose among applications whose names and business affiliations have been coded numerically to provide anonymity of the candidate. The panel will be comprised of both senior and new members with the election process facilitated by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee: Holly Sylvester and/or the Chapter President, MyChelle Andrews. Please let Holly or Marlene know if you re able to serve on the review board. You will be required to attend the selection meeting March 17. Due Dates: Applications are due no later than Thursday, March 10, and will be reviewed Thursday, March 17, The chosen candidates will be announced at the March 24 meeting and will be submitted to National for final review no later than May 2, 2011.

6 P a g e 6 Committee Square Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund Outright Grant Application Process Following is the process to submit s to the SBMEF Grant online system. Outright grant applications completed by March 1, 2011 will be reviewed for an additional $500 incentive. In order to be considered, both the applicant and chapter/ network must be eligible and complete the online process by that date. Your February meeting will be the last opportunity to vote approval of an applicant to sponsor by March 1. Applications submitted after March 1, 2011 and before June 1, 2011 will be reviewed for the amount of $1500. The steps La Luz members will follow are: 1. We enter the names and addresses of up to three applicants online. a. SBMEF web site is ID is LaLuz; password is SBMEFALBQ b. Click on the words Outright Grant c. Then click on SET UP A NEW APPLICANT to enter applicants name and Using the online system, each applicant will be sent an . The system will include her personal username and password that she will use to upload information. 3. The individual listed as the contact for the Chapter will receive an automated when the applicant has completed all steps. 4. Applicants are required to provide a current official transcript to the Chapter. Once we receive that transcript, we are to add the information to the web site school name, hours completed and GPA as shown on the transcript). We must then upload the transcript to the online system or mail it to SBMEF 5. When all steps for all applicants have been completed, La Luz must verify eligibility and vote to submit our choice to SBMEF at the February business meeting. 6. We will then report this action using the Chapter/Network Sponsorship Form which we obtain from the SBMEF website. We will then either mail or upload the Sponsorship Form. 7. After the Sponsorship Form has been mailed or uploaded we submit the grant application by clicking a button by the selected applicant s name. 8. Approval of the application is indicated on the web site by a specific icon by the student s name. 9. Our last step will be to purchase an ABWA student gift membership ($50) which we can do online or by mail. We add this information to the web site. 10. When the student gift membership has been received, the grant check will be issued and mailed to the La Luz President for presentation.

Secretary Report o Chapter Minutes Approved with change. Member of the Month o Member selected We will be changing when we giving the award to during dinner. Area Council o o Holiday Party Dec 12 - this weekend, remember to bring a food donation Shopping for family (mom) Kathy will buy the gift certificates and hair dryer, Barbara will buy the pants. Website Updates o MyChelle sent website updates to Robin o If anyone has ideas for a new front page, please send them to MyChelle December Treasurer Report o Verbal report from JoAnn, balanced checkbook. JoAnn will get the written report to Inga. Publicity Plan Reviewed the plan MyChelle submitted during her Top Ten interview. MyChelle submitted the plan to National and received a response. MyChelle will start researching what it will take to do a YouTube channel that includes our website and a way to donate money to our chapter. What does La Luz need in the up coming year There was a lot of discussion about whether it would be better for MyChelle to run for national office or focus on chapter growth, publicity, and fund raising. It was determined that there were pros and cons each way. MyChelle to talk to Patty (current DVP) to see what her recommendation would be. Chapter will support with any decision. Fund Raising Committee Report o Fund Raising by Category - see newsletter for report o Concessions do we want to do it next year we had a lot of discussion on what we want to do, think about what to do next year. Need a committee to look at other options. 8 P a g e 8 Executive Board Meeting Minutes - January La Luz Business/Executive Board Meeting January 13, 2011 Meeting began at 5:30 p.m. Attendees: MyChelle, Michelle, Marlene, JoAnn, Margaret, Dana, Jeanne, Inga, Holly, Anne Member of the Month Chosen Area Council: Upcoming regional conference reviewed. Need for volunteers at regional conference discussed. It was agreed that La Luz chapter would assist members who want to attend with registration fees. Details and amount will be finalized once final number of attendees is determined. Decision made not to host a VIP party or VIP transportation. Website Updates: MyChelle will send out an Evite for members to join a brainstorming session. Michelle will help. Treasurer Report: JoAnn Need to reflect donation of speaker gifts on report was discussed. JoAnn will change name of report to November/December report. All dues are now paid. JoAnn will adjust spreadsheet so all columns are visible and total correctly. JoAnn noted that all outstanding banking will be done 1/14/11. District VI Vice-President office discussed. Attendees agreed to support MyChelle running for this office. Jeanne will nominate MyChelle at January chapter meeting. If vote passes, MyChelle will campaign at the Santa Fe regional conference. MyChelle is responsible for fund raising to support her campaign. Some members will help campaign for MyChelle during the regional conference and others will serve as volunteers at the conference on behalf of the chapter. Marlene and JoAnn agreed to volunteer for Newsletter committee. Margaret has also volunteered for the conference. Jeanne, Holly and Michelle will campaign for MyChelle at the regional conference in April. Holly will serve as MyChelle s campaign manager. Governor s Award for Outstanding New Mexico Women is now accepting applications. MyChelle wants to apply and Jeanne will assist with application. La Luz chapter will cover the application fee. Business Plan: MyChelle Vision Statement final two selections discussed. It was agreed to accept a combination of the two. MyChelle will adjust and post revised vision statement in the newsletter. Decision made not to change previous newsletters but to use Vision Statement going forward. Fund Raising Committee Report Jeanne Working on UNM concessions in the future was discussed. Other fundraising ideas will be considered to potentially replace this activity. Yard sale will be in May either before or after Mother s Day. Program Committee Report Holly and Marlene January Guest speaker was noted. Holly reported that Holiday Inn Xpress has offered their conference room free of charge for future meetings. Outside catering would be required. This will be discussed further and considered in the future. Article for newsletter for Woman of the Year and Top 10 Candidate was reviewed with suggestions for changes made. Marlene to send final copy to Inga for publication. Membership Committee Report Jeanne for Sharon and Kathy Social events are being finalized and will be posted in newsletter. Orientation Jeanne will design an Orientation Program and publish a schedule in the newsletter. Professional Development Committee Report - Dana SBMEF candidates will be processed through ABWA National. Dana will develop local process further. Process of education reimbursement and current chapter binder discussed. Meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Does not need to be a member of ABWA Have a 2.5 or better GPA on a 4.0 scale Must be seeking a baccalaureate degree or higher Process 1. Complete the candidate information section of the SBMEF application in full. 2. Provide official transcripts of grades from all colleges attended. 3. Write a one-page biographical summary 4. Submit three current letters of reference from persons other than relatives.
