1 NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release SMALLER COMPANIES ARE THE BIG IMPROVERS IN THE 2014 FASTEST GROWING 50 AWARDS Chemical giant LANXESS is the fastest growing company in Singapore Record number of companies receive a DP1 Credit Rating 19 August 2014 [SINGAPORE] Smaller companies outshine billion dollar companies this year in the Fastest Growing 50 (FG50) Awards. Seventeen companies with turnovers of less than $100 million made this year s FG50 winners list, and of these 10 are home grown SMEs 1. The FG50 is compiled by DP Information Group (DP Info) and it identifies companies that achieved a minimum of 10 per cent turnover growth every year for the last three years while remaining profitable each year. The qualifying companies are then ranked by their three-year Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), with the top 50 receiving a FG50 Award. 1 The Singapore 1000 ranking body defines an SME as an enterprise that (1) has an annual Sales/Turnover of less than SGD 100 million, (2) has at least 30% Singapore equity ownership and must not be a subsidiary of a Singapore Public Listed Company.

2 Ms Chen Yew Nah, Managing Director of DP Information Group said the return of the SMEs to the winners list was a good result for Singapore as SMEs are the country s major source of employment. Last year the list was dominated by large multinational firms with 20 companies on the list with sales of more than $1 billion. This year the number of billion dollar companies has fallen to 15. At the other end of the sales scale, companies with sales of less than $100 million have increased their representation from just six in 2013 to 17 this year. The key to growth for SMEs is usually carving out a niche in the market by doing something better, faster or more economically. So achieving fast growth is a reflection of the company s innovation rather than its market dominance. Given the high level of merger and acquisition activity in Singapore lately, these SMEs may be prime targets for larger companies looking to rapidly grow sales, while others may decide to do the acquiring themselves. So these fast growing SMEs have the potential to become large international players in years to come, Ms Chen said. 3 LANXESS TOPS THE FG50 WINNER S LIST German chemical giant LANXESS is growing quicker than any other company in Singapore, according to the 2014 Fastest Growing 50. The company has enjoyed phenomenal sales growth since opening its new butyl rubber plant on Jurong Island last year. LANXESS recorded a 3-year CAGR of 6,246.8 per cent the highest growth rate recorded in the Award s 13-year history. Up until now, the fastest CAGR was 3,136.0 per cent recorded in Ms Chen said the speed at which LANXESS has established itself in Singapore has been phenomenal. In just three years, LANXESS has gone from a revenue of a few thousand dollars in 2010 to sales of more than S$1.6 billion in The efficient way LANXESS got the new plant up and running and the sales flowing is impressive, and that s why they have shattered the 10-year old record for the fastest growth achieved by a FG50 company, Ms Chen said. 4 CREDIT STANDING OF FG50 COMPANIES CONTINUES TO IMPROVE The number of FG50 companies with the prestigious DP1 Credit Rating climbed to a new high of 13. A DP1 Rated company has a probability of default on a debt of less than 0.1 per cent. Table 2: DP1-Rated Fastest Growing Companies ( ) Thirty four of the 50 companies were ranked DP1-4 which makes them comparable with investment grade rated securities. Only one company was considered to have a high-risk credit rating of DP7-8. This year s FG50 winners are among the most creditworthy companies in Singapore. The FG50 proves that growth does not have to come as a result of increased debt and risky financial management, Ms Chen said. Page 4 of 10

5 ANALYSIS OF THE FG50 WINNERS Singapore companies did well in this year s rankings, with 23 home-grown companies up the list, up from 16 last year. The Wholesale Sector had the largest number of winners with 19 on the list. However this is down from the 28 wholesale companies in the FG50 last year. Property companies continue to do well with eight making this year s list seven of which are development companies with the other being in real estate sales. Only one Finance sector company made the list in This is the first time a Finance company has made the FG50 since The Fastest Growing 50 is organised and ranked by DP Information Group, the ranking body of the Singapore 1000 Family of Rankings. 8 APPENDIX 2 FASTEST GROWING 50 AWARDS METHODOLOGY Ranking period is for 4 financial years. For the 2014 FG50 awards, the financial years considered are from 1 June May In addition to the ranking criteria of the Singapore 1000 and Singapore SME 1000 (ref for full ranking methodology and criteria), companies need to fulfil the following to qualify for consideration as a Fastest Growing 50 company:- 1. Must fulfil 4 full years of operations. 2. Be ranked in the Singapore 1000 and Singapore SME Must demonstrate 10% sales/turnover growth or better every year for each of the 3 years and must be profitable for all 3 years. 4. Companies financials must be certified true and fair according to auditors for all 4 years. The final order of position is from the last 3-years CAGR growth (in percentage) in sales/turnover, in descending order. Page 8 of 10
