3 WHAT IS UCD IN THE COMMUNITY? UCD in the Community is an initiative which aims to promote greater civic engagement through its core activities. It strives to strengthen relationships with the community in a mutually beneficial way. There are four main components of the promotion of civic engagement - community or service based learning and research, engaged research, student volunteering and metrics and evaluation. In UCD, civic engagement could be Student volunteering Staff placements with community based organisations (CBOs) Capacity building Outreach programmes with marginalised groups widening participation Events and activities that promote awareness of civic engagement UCD in the Community wishes to promote and support students, staff and alumni involved in civic engagement 3

4 STUDENT VOLUNTEERING ON STUDENTVOLUNTEER.IE Studentvolunteer.ie is an online tool that supports students wishing to volunteer in their communities. It is a national volunteering database specifically created for higher education students. Students simply register online by entering their contact details. From there you can browse and apply for volunteering opportunities based on your needs, interests and/or location! UCD students can access the website at Studentvolunteer.ie is a useful resource, which allows students to to Browse opportunities Apply for once-off and long-term opportunities Track your volunteering hours Receive updates on any opportunities that might be of interest to you Connect with local, national and international organisations 4

5 WHY SHOULD YOU ADVERTISE ON STUDENTVOLUNTEER.IE? Ongoing campaign to encourage all UCD students to register this will continue for 2017/18 Currently over 260 UCD students registered since Dec Accessible way to keep track of volunteers List of volunteers & their hours worked available to you at any time Volunteers can add ad-hoc hours for work done outside registered opportunities An easy way to keep up to date with all your volunteers! 6 UCD CLUBS, SOCIETIES AND VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES PROFILE ON STUDENTVOLUNTEER.IE UCD Clubs, Societies and anyone in UCD who has a volunteering opportunity for UCD students can register volunteering opportunities in their organisations by contacting ucdic@ucd.ie or completing the Google form at Their opportunities will be posted under the University College Dublin Clubs, Societies & Volunteering organisation profile page on studentvolunteer.ie 6

7 HOW TO REGISTER YOUR OPPORTUNITY Designate who will be responsible for student volunteering opportunities in your club/society e.g. auditor/activities officer This individual can access and complete the Google Form UCD Clubs and Societies Volunteer Opportunties at Your form will be reviewed by Holly Dignam (Student Volunteer Officer) and she will any questions to you Your opportunity will be posted on studentvolunteer.ie, under UCD Clubs, Societies & Volunteering students will apply to volunteer Holly will contact you to inform you of volunteer s details It is the responsibility of the club/society to contact volunteers once they have received these details. 7

8 ELECTIVE MODULE OF INTEREST TO VOLUNTEERING STUDENTS Community, Volunteering & Leadership Module (SCI20030) This community-based learning module provides students with an opportunity to reflect in a structured way on their learning from their volunteering and community experience(s). Students should have prior (50 hours) and on-going experience of volunteering. Core topics include leadership, project management, the nature of community, the role of volunteering and the interlinking of these areas. Students will consider these themes and topics with reference to their own community participation, such an involvement in clubs and/or societies or with a community-based organisation, locally, nationally or internationally. Students will be guided to develop a portfolio to document their volunteering and community experience, reflect on key learning from this experience and consider how this has helped form personal and professional values and competences (e.g. communication, negotiation, teamwork and problem-solving skills). Students will have an opportunity in this module to learn about themselves as learners, engage their critical hinking and broaden their social awareness. 8
