1 R a d o n i n G e o r g i a GREP is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Office of Planning and Environmental Management NRAM at the Capitol As is now tradition, our program was able Georgia Radon Symposium The largest event our program conducted during NRAM was the Georgia Radon Symposium. This event was advertised to radon professionals throughout the state and had a wide variety of presentations. We had contacts from the EPA, DCA, CDC, certified mitigation and measurement specialists, local government workers, codes, extension agents, and more in attendance and giving presentations on the state of radon in Georgia. We invited Dr. Kitto (seen below) from the New York State Department of Health to talk about the radon findings for Georgia he has come across in his research. This symposium was a great contact source for the radon industry of Georgia and provided excellent discussions on next steps we need to take in terms of testing, mitigating, and creating regulations for the state. We hope to be able to offer this event on a regular basis. to honor Radon Poster Contest winners at the State Capitol during National Radon Action Month. Our program representatives, along with Adriane Wood (DCA), Henry Slack, Carol Kemker, and Amber Davis (EPA), the poster contest winners, their families, and their teachers or 4-H agents met Governor Deal and had photos taken with him for our Radon Proclamation. This proclamation, which we have been receiving for several years now, is an official acknowledgement of radon and the work we do throughout the state to promote testing in order to keep our citizens healthy. We always enjoy being able to honor the winners at this event and to gain more attention at the Capitol in order to promote what we do.

2 Carroll County Radon Program The UGA Radon Program combined efforts with the UGA Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratories (AESL) to provide citizens of Carroll County a Radon in Air and Water class. This was the first combined class we have done in a few years. The first half of the class went over the basics of radon and home air, and then the second half was devoted to radon in water and how it can effect the levels of radon in the home. There were several questions from attendees since radon in water is a much newer concept to most individuals than radon in air. Participants were given the opportunity to purchase radon in air kits and had the chance to win a radon in water test kit in a drawing. This joint program clearly illustrated how radon can affect the health of an individual through multiple ways. It is our hope that we continue to work together and do joint presentations in the future. As an added bonus for our programs, a local newspaper featured a blurb about the class on the front page of their paper the day following the class. Milton Library Program The UGA Radon Education Program traveled to the Milton Library in Fulton County to provide a radon education class at the request of a local real estate group. Our program thoroughly enjoys every opportunity we have to work with real estate groups sine radon is gaining more and more of a presence in home buying and selling transactions throughout the state. This program allowed us to directly interact with and make contacts with real estate professionals who were able to make plans for future radon programs. This particular group has come up with innovative ways to get the word out about radon, including using radon kits as door prizes for their clients. They are helping to spread the word about radon to their clients and coworkers so that everyone is more educated about this gas when it comes to buying or selling homes.
