1 R a d o n i n G e o r g i a GREP is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Office of Planning and Environmental Management Athens AME Health Fair Every year the Georgia Radon Program is invited to participate in the Athens AME Church Health Fair. This is a smaller health fair, but it is open to the public. Many attendees are underserved and look forward to this event every year to obtain medical information and screenings they may not otherwise get. Our program was included in the environmental health area. Many attendees had received test kits from us before and gave us updates on their previous tests and mentioned telling family and friends about testing as well. This is a great local event we are proud to be a part of each year. Atlanta Free to Breathe 5K Free to Breathe is an organization which aims to find a cure for lung cancer. We have worked with the Athens-area chapter for several years now, but this year was the first year we were able to work with the Atlanta Free to Breathe group at their 5k event. Our program had a tent & table where participants could receive complimentary radon kits and information about testing. The DJ for the event routinely mentioned our booth and the effects radon exposure can have on the lungs, so we were able to educate hundreds of people about radon at this one event in Piedmont Park.

2 2016 International Radon Symposium Presentation The Georgia Radon Program has a presence at the International Radon Symposium every year, however this year we were able to have a team member present his research at the event. Dr.Uttam Saha, with the UGA Agricultural and Environmental Service Laboratory, submitted a paper on radon in water and various sampling methods. The paper was accepted, so Dr. Uttam Saha traveled to San Diego, California, for the presentation. Dr. Saha, along with Dr. Mike Kitto of the NY State Health Department and several others, have been researching different techniques for obtaining samples of radon in water because there are no set standards as of yet. Additionally, there are no specific standards for safe levels of radon in water. With their research they are making great strides to create standards that entire nation can follow in this relatively new area of radon work. The UGA Radon Program is excited to be involved in this work and to contribute to the science field of radon. Our continued work in radon in water will help shape the future and will provide even more information to our citizens on how they can prevent their exposure to radon as much as possible.
