City Manager Briefing Report April 2010 Eric M. Soroka, ICMA-CM City Manager This report is prepared in order to inform the City Commission of the status of major projects and ongoing matters.

South Stormwater Collector Repairs The following repairs were completed to address deficiencies in the drainage system: NE 188 St: repaired collapsed pipe and removed obstructions.

South Stormwater Collector Repairs The following repairs were completed to address deficiencies in the drainage system: NE 188 St: repaired collapsed pipe and removed obstructions. NE 29 Ave: Repaired three sections of damaged and collapsed pipe and installed conflict box where utilities have been installed. NE 29 Ave: Repaired section of damaged outfall pipe and connection from Harbor Center. NE 191 St: Removed obstructions. NE 191 St/29 Ave Intersection: Repaired damaged, obstructed and collapsed pipe. Cost of above repairs: $86, Go Green Applications The City received 8 applications for utilizing Go Green efforts. The winners will be recognized at the Arbor Day event on April 29, Arts and Cultural Center Note: Construction updates appear under the Major Capital Improvement Projects section in this report. The Honor Roll Founder and Walk of Arts programs are available on the website and have generated a lot of interest. Registration is underway for the Summer Theater Camp. The updated Website went online this month. The Technical Director was hired. Plans are also underway to organize the Curtains Up open house in September and the opening event in October At this point we have 129 confirmed bookings. Police Department Statistics & Highlights Monthly Crime Overview Crimes from February 2010 to March 2010 that increased: Murder up by 1; Burglary up by 1; Larceny up by 30; Theft-Auto up by 3. Crimes from February 2010 and March 2010 that decreased: Simple Assault down by 1; Aggravated Assault down by 1. Crimes from February 2010 and March 2010 that have no change: Robbery February March **Totals for the Larceny category for the month of February were erroneously entered for the amount of 42 instead of the correct amount of 163. 4 Recovery Act Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Application The City has filed a grant application on December 14, 2009 with the Department of Energy for $4,217,000 for funding for the following components: Solar energy retrofit for Community Recreation Center and Charter School. Retrofit City Streetlights with LED or Induction Lighting. Community Outreach Programming- Go Green Efforts. Energy Audit for all City Buildings. State Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Application The City has filed a grant application with the state for $1,119,000 for the installation of solar panels on the Community Recreation Center and Charter School. City Guide Complete: The City Guide was distributed this month to the community. Website Information The City s website averages 32,000 visitors a month. The Charter School s website averages 12,000 visitors a month. The new website for the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center received 1,600 visitors for the month of March. We have 250 Twitter followers. Aventura City of Excellence School Highlights The Middle School Field Day was a huge success for students and staff alike. The event fostered competition, team building, good sportsmanship and a great deal of enthusiasm. Fourth and fifth grade students competed against peers in ACES 4 th Annual Spelling Bee. A total of 107 words were used to find a winner. 4 th grader Ian Baracco won first place. 5 th grader Santiago de Urbina won second place and 5 th grader April Ansari won third place. The finalists will go on to compete in the 5 th Annual Charter Schools USA Spelling Bee competition in mid-may. The Middle School Drama students performed a play for ACES elementary students entitled The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring. The play was about a beautiful Queen that lost her royal ring and in desperation summoned all the detectives back to the castle to search for her ring. On April 15 th ACES hosted its first Alumni Return Luncheon. Former ACES graduates were invited back to ACES to share their high school experiences and insights with current 8 th grade students. Over 90 former ACES students attended. Ives Dairy Road / US 1 Intersection Improvements The study recommended the creation of an additional southbound turn lane and signage improvements to expedite traffic. The City Commission agreed with the City Manager Briefing Report 4

5 recommendations and FDOT had been formally requested to expedite the project. 6 Biscayne Boulevard Intersection Traffic Improvements Phase II NE 191st Street The bid was awarded at the April 6, 2010 Commission Meeting. Don Soffer Exercise Trail Improvements Project The first phase is complete. Project completion is scheduled for August Hospital District Asphalt Overlay Work on this project began this month. Project completion is scheduled for August A meeting was held with Aventura Hospital to clarify and discuss areas of work, lane closures, time frames of construction and emergency vehicle ingress/egress. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and ACES Informational sign The City Commission authorized the Administration to proceed with placing a digital information sign at the intersection of NE 188 th St and NE 29 th Avenue. This project is currently in design. Aventura Arts & Cultural Center (AACC) Theatre seating has been installed and the wood stage floor will be complete at the end of the month. Terrazzo floor prep work continues and terrazzo work will be complete by May 17, Other interior finish work including ceiling tiles, flooring, paint, cabinetry and electrical and communication wiring is progressing and on schedule. Brick pavers are scheduled to be completed on May 7, Site landscaping and irrigation work progresses. All curtain wall glass is up as is exterior glass and window work.
