EMDC Workforce Provides Resume Review Services Completing a resume from scratch can be a daunting task. Updating an existing resume, particularly if it's been awhile since your resume was "dusted off", can be just as challenging. That's when the Career Advisors from EMDC's Workforce Department can help. One of the services offered through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), a federally funded program implemented locally through the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board (TCWIB) and EMDC, is a resume and cover letter writing workshop. Designed for individuals currently enrolled in the WIA program, these workshops help those who are looking for work--some of whom have been out of the workforce for an extended period or who were recently separated from

2 EMDC Newsflash December 9 2 of 5 12/9/2013 3:47 PM a job they held for a number of years--learn how to best market their talents and skills. A two session workshop, Resume & Cover Letter Writing provides valuable information and the opportunity for attendees to leave with a completed resume, ready to send to potential employers. "There are a number of individuals in our communities who are exceptionally talented, but who, for one reason or another, have either never created a resume or haven't had a need to update an existing one," EMDC's Deputy Director of Workforce Development, Nancy McKechnie said. "These workshops help guide them through that process." Workshops are held twice a month and usually last between 1.5 and 2 hours. Attendees would need to pre-register and bring a notebook, pen/pencil and a flash drive, if they have one. The Resume & Cover Letter Writing workshop is part of a nine workshop series for job seekers. Customers enrolled in WIA programs are not required to attend workshops, but it is encouraged. The workshops are open to the public, although priority registration is given to WIA customers. Our employees are deeply involved in their communities and give countless hours to a wide variety of organizations. In the spirit of the holiday season, we'll be highlighting those organizations so that the greater EMDC community may learn about the organizations and individuals serving others each day. Seamus Higgins and Habitat for Humanity Most people have heard about Habitat for Humanity, but many aren't sure exactly what the non-profit does. As Board President for the Greater Bangor chapter, Seamus Higgins says its many things. Habitat is Is a charity, a contractor, a financial institution, a retail store and a community organizer. That's a lot of hats for one organization but Habitat has been wearing them in Greater Bangor for more than 25 years. Below Seamus provides information on the organization and its work. Habitat Homes Habitat homes are purchased, not donated. Habitat functions as the General Contractor, the mortgage broker, and the loan underwriter. Our homeowners have a mortgage and pay property taxes and insurance just like everybody else. Here in Bangor, the local affiliate typically underwrites a 30-year mortgage at 0% interest. We strive to reduce the cost of the home by utilizing donated labor and materials when possible, but there are still significant costs with each home we build. Our target customer is often a family of limited means who has some credit and has income, but can't quite access traditional bank financing. It's a narrow niche, but it works. Homeowners help in the construction process. As we build, the eventual owners of the home help pound nails, paint walls, and do whatever else they're comfortable with. They also help the affiliate with fundraising campaigns, the retail store, or anything else they're willing and able to do. Part of the "deal" with a Habitat home is that you're involved in the process and that you help us help the next guy. An Independent Non-Profit Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor is not the same as Habitat for Humanity International. We are a local affiliate of a large international organization, which does provide oversight and support to our work, but at a cash cost to HFHGB. HFHGB functions as an independent nonprofit corporation with our own Board of Directors. Housing...and so much more We do more than just build houses. Here in Bangor, we typically build one new home a year, but offer many other services as well. Our "A Brush With Kindness" program provides assistance with minor repairs and will hopefully serve over a dozen individuals and families in the year ahead. Our Weatherization services will provide energy efficiency improvements at low or no cost. This summer, we took ownership of an existing home for the first time, which will be remodeled and repaired for future sale. We sponsor financial literacy training seminars, construction and safety workshops for kids, and other civic-minded programs and events throughout the year.

4 4 of 5 12/9/2013 3:47 PM We have a retail store. Think Goodwill meets Lowes meets the Furniture Gallery (the latter two both great sponsors of our local affiliate, btw!). It's open to the public, and we encourage everyone to stop by and shop or donate. We sell and accept new and gently used furniture, appliances, tools, building materials, and other home goods. Donations are tax deductible and sales benefit our construction (and other) programs. 83 Washington Street in the plaza with Dunnett's and Hero's (also both HFHGB supporters!). One last thing to note, Habitat even has a program where individuals can donate an old car or truck and the proceeds will benefit the local affiliate.
