UNITED WAY 101 WHAT DOES UNITED WAY DO? United Way of Southwestern Indiana makes strategic investments in our community with the ultimate goal of improving lives in our community and building a stronger southwestern Indiana. We accomplish this by helping individuals and creating community level change. Our strategies include leading cross-sector collaborations, advocacy for public policy changes, and funding direct services provided by partner agencies and the United Way of Southwestern Indiana. WHERE DOES UNITED WAY FOCUS? The building blocks of a quality life are education, financial stability, health, and community essential services; United Way focuses our investments in these strategic areas with the intention that all of our citizens will attain self-sufficiency. We work collaboratively to ensure that children succeed in schools, individuals lead healthy lives, and everyone has the opportunity to achieve financial well-being. Key strategic investments include: Programs that help to ensure kids are ready to enter school and are reading on the proper grade level. Kids are more likely to graduate from high school if they enter school ready to succeed. Programs to ensure that children, adults, and families access needed health care services. Poor health contributes to an individual's ability to thrive in school, at work, and at home. Programs that help to ensure individuals and families have the needed resources that they need to secure affordable housing and a stable income. WHY IS UNITED WY THE BEST WAY TO MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE? United Way has the scope, expertise and influence to bring together hundreds of human service agencies, government, businesses, private foundations, an dedicated volunteers around a common vision of crating maximum impact and achieving long-lasting results. Supporting the United way is an intelligent investment. We identify, understand, and prioritize ongoing and emerging needs We recruit the people and organizations who bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done We are trusted by our partners and the community because we ensure transparency, efficiency, and accountability in our work. We regularly evaluate and assess the effectiveness of the programs that we support, identifying where there is redundancy and opportunities to improve efficiency. 3

UNITED WAY 101 HOW DOES UNITED WAY MAKE INVESTMENTS? United Way convenes various constituencies to understand the greatest needs in our community and makes strategic investments in programs that support our greatest needs. We rely on more than 70 community and corporate volunteers to determine how funds raised are distributed. Funded programs focus on outcomes that lead to participants self sufficiency. United Way s goal is not to serve more people year over year, but to move as many people as we can from dependency to self sufficiency. Approximately eighteen percent of the funds raised support operations. WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF UNITED WAY AT WORK? 4

UNITED WAY 101 OUR MISSION TO IMPROVE LIVES BY MOBILIZING THE CARING POWER OF COMMUNITIES. United Way of Southwestern Indiana is working to advance the common good. WHY UNITED WAY? 10 ALICE Alice is an acronym that stands for Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. In 2015 United Way of Southwestern Indiana introduced the ALICE Report; a data-driven, comprehensive research project that tells the story of hard-working people in Indiana. The data shows a signifcant number of Southwestern Indiana households can t afford the basics of housing, food, health care, child care and transportation, despite being employed with one or more jobs. This is the ALICE story. What is the ALICE Story? More than 4 out of 10 of our neighbors and friends are working hard but cannot meet all of their basic needs This story explains a great need that is prevalent in our community Many ALICE individuals are invisible, yet we encounter them everyday-neighbors, co-workers or family members Many ALICE famlies hold jobs that are critical to the success of our communities - child care workers, laborers and movers, home health aides, heavy truck drivers, store clerks, repair workers and office assistants- yet, they struggle to make ends-meet 29% of individuals in Spencer County are below the ALICE threshold. 24% of individuals in Warrick County are below the ALICE threshold. of individuals in Vanderburgh County are below the ALICE threshold. 43% How is United Way changing the ALICE story? United Way of Southwestern Indiana s focus, is shifting to not only giving people a fish, but teaching those indviduals in need how to fish United Way is uniquely positioned to convene the resources, the organizations necessary to impact aspects of their lives, especially in the areas of education, income and health This is an opportunity with more that one solution to improve lives in our community. It will take policy makers, educators, business and social service agencies uniting together to change the ALICE story Our ultimate goal is to change the story for those in need and put them on the path to self-suffiency. Changing the ALICE story benefits the entire community. It benefits the individuals and families in need and it provides employers with a healthy, educated, available work force. It also provides the community with a reduction of support dollars that can be used elsewhere. 9

FAST FACTS ABOUT UNITED WAY 1. We do not financially support abortions and we do not financially support any organizations that do abortions. 2. Each United Way is a local organization, independently incorporated and governed by a local volunteer Board of Directors. We are part of a global network of local United Ways. There are 1800 United Ways around the world all working to change the conditions in their local community. United Way Worldwide sets the general focus of the network which is driven by the work of local United Ways. We are a bottom up network not a top down. As a network, we focus on education, income and health. Each United Way can decide how that work will be done in their local community. Money raised stays in the local community. 3. Over 70 volunteers from all backgrounds determine how the money raised in the annual campaign will be invested in programs that focus on education, income and health. Volunteers spend many hours reviewing the funding requests, agency program outcomes, visiting the agencies, reviewing financial information to make a well-informed decisions to invest the money in programs that have the greatest impact. 4. Our United Way treats designations as a separate pool of funding. If the volunteers determine an agency will receive $100,000 and the agency has $50,000 in designated gifts the agency will receive $150,000 from United Way. Designations are paid quarterly and fund distribution amounts are paid monthly. 5. United Way does raise money and distributes it to programs in our partner agencies that focus on education, income, health and essential communtiy needs and we do so much more. 6. The United Way of Southwestern Indiana s administrative costs are 18%. The Better Business Bureau says 35% administrative costs is an acceptable standard. 7. United Way of Southwestern Indiana does support faith based organizations whose missions are to serve all people. We fund several faith-based organizations such as Catholic Charities, Boy Scouts, YMCA, Christian Resource Center, and Evansville Christian Life Center. United Way was founded by religious leaders in Denver in

MAKING THE ASK Start BIG with Leadership Giving -- focus on those who have given $1,000 or more per year in the past, and those who have given close to that, to increase their gift Be sure to ASK every employee for a gift Always be respectful of the fact that giving is a personal matter -- whether a person wishes to give and the amount they choose to give is up to the individual Research shows that the number one reason people don t give is because they are not asked! Describe and explain any corporate match that may be offered through your company Explain the convenience of payroll deduction (if appropriate) for the donor Recognize commitment and make everyone feel appreciated Submit completed FINAL campaign report envelopes to your United Way rep as soon as your campaign is over SAY THANK YOU Celebrate success and say thank you to all your donors. Share your results with everyone who participated Help us say thanks by sharing your donor information with us. Donors feel more connected when we thank them directly.
