INTRODUCTION ChinaAccess4EU aims at increasing the awareness and dissemination in the Member States and Associated Countries of access opportunities of European researchers and research organisations in Chinese national research and/or innovation programmes. The overriding purpose of the project is to help develop the reciprocity aspect of the EU-China Science and Technology agreement by identifying the Chinese programmes open to EU researchers and promote their participation, and to provide outputs useful in the context of the Joint Committee meetings of the EU-China Science and Technology agreement. To this end the project will focus on the mapping of the access opportunities in China, dissemination of the results to European research organisations and multipliers, monitoring of the participation of researchers from the EU in Chinese programmes, and provision of feedback and recommendations to the EC. The first project workshop took place on 29 September 2010 in Stuttgart. The detailed results are presented in the following sections. 2. PROJECT WORKSHOP, 29 SEPTEMBER 2010, STUTTGART The first project workshop was held on 29 September 2010 at HAUS DER WIRTSCHAFT BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG in Stuttgart, Germany. The event was chaired by Mr. Robert Sanders from EBN, and included the following presentations: Prof. Norbert Höptner, Director : Prof. Höptner welcomed all workshop participants. The workshop should be considered an open exchange of information, and to increase the velocity of innovation. Prof. Höptner wished participants could obtain more information on how European researchers can access funding opportunities in China. Mr Michele Genovese, Scientific Officer from DG Research of the European Commission: Mr. Genovese made a presentation on the strategic European framework for international S&T cooperation. Relevant EU initiatives, such as BILAT-SILK , ERA-NET - Co-Reach 2, INCO-LAB China, EURAXESS Links China were introduced. EU / China cooperation in FP7 statistics were introduced. These statistics showed the funding distribution according to different categories, such as success rate from Chinese applicants, funding for different thematic areas, amongst others. Dr Sara Medina, Member of the Board - SPI (Project Coordinator): Dr. Sara Medina from SPI made an introduction to the ChinaAccess4EU project. SPI is the coordinator of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação 1

4 ChinaAccess4EU project. Dr. Medina introduced the project background, objectives, consortium, methodology and main outputs/results. Dr. Zhengping Liu, Deputy General Manager - International Technology Transfer Center (ITTC) of Tsinghua University: Dr. Liu first provided an overview of S&T development in China. Out of more 10 national funding agencies, Dr. Liu introduced in detail international cooperation opportunities of Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). At the end of the presentation, Dr. Liu provided some suggestions to EU researchers on how to participate in Chinese funding programmes. Ms Shuyu Xie, Project Manager - SPI: Ms Xie provided an overview of the ChinaAccess4EU portal ( In additional to this portal, two additional public documents, ChinaAccess4EU Monthly Alerts and ChinaAccess4EU Bi-annual Newsletters were introduced with great detail. Four invited speakers presented their success stories in EU/China cooperation in research and innovation programmes: 1) Dr Marion Tobler, National Contact Point, EU Research Head Office Swiss Information Network: Dr. Tobler explained the types of researches and cooperation with China in Framework Programmes. A practical example: ENV-NCP-TOGETHER was discussed. 2) Dipl.-Ing. Dietrich Schneider, Stuttgart University of Technology: Dipl.-Ing. Schneider provided insights on the Robert Bosch Stiftung funding opportunity. This is an ongoing project with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a leading Chinese university. 3) Mr Andrew Tonks, Business Development Manager - Institutes and Global Challenges, Coventry University: Mr. Tonks explained a Soft Landing Zone project in Qingdao University. This project allows UK companies to gain access to Chinese partners 4) Prof. Dr. Günther Klotz, CCC - China Cultural Consulting, Ulm: Prof. Dr. Klotz provided some concrete suggestions on how to build intercultural sensitivity and competence in cross-cultural activities based on his 35 years extensive experience with China.
