7 Strategic Initiatives Ignite has formed a number of task forces, developed strategic initiatives, and formed partnerships to drive priority sector growth. Some highlights include: Arts & Culture Current arts and culture initiatives led by Ignite Fredericton and Planet Hatch include: Established Artrepreneur-in- Residence program. Member of Culture Connect, Fredericton Arts Alliance, and Makerspace Advisory Committee. Development of a cultural hub in Knowledge Park. Partnership with ArtsLink NB to bring a permanent arts and culture business accelerator for emerging artists (Catapult) to Planet Hatch. Promotion across marketing channels. Craft Alcohol Producers Ignite Fredericton has been advocating on behalf of the craft alcohol producers sector with respect to updating policies and regulations. In Canada, craft alcohol has evolved from a basement hobby to a new, highly technical industry impacting multiple sectors from agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and tourism. Although the craft industry did not emerge in New Brunswick until the 1990 s with early trailblazers like Sean Dunbar of Picaroons; today, Fredericton alone is home to a growing cluster of craft beer, craft cider, wine and mead producers. The industry currently generates a direct economic impact of $8.3 million annually, which is projected to grow, with policy and regulation reform, to $42 million in five years and $144.5 million in ten years. Natural Resource Development Ignite Fredericton formed this taskforce to maximize economic opportunities with respect to near-term, responsible natural resource development. Specifically, the taskforce focuses on: Connecting local businesses with supply chain and procurement opportunities. Skilling up for jobs and creating specialized, expert world-wide talent within our region. Facilitating a clustering environment to attract FDI and spur growth of new start-ups. Natural resource sub-committee work continues for: Communications & Advocacy: Developed comprehensive communications plan, which includes an enhanced web portal, strategic social media engagement of stakeholders, and proactive advocacy efforts. Business Development: Leveraging project supply chain opportunities for the benefit of the community, as well as attracting new companies and expertise to the region. Long-term, we could envision a new building in Knowledge Park with a natural resource focus. Policy: Influencing policy with respect to resource development, i.e. a harmonized EIA process. Workforce Readiness: Via task force representation on the provincial workforce readiness initiative. Business Stage/Life Cycle [i] Broad Industry Representation [c] Business Retention & Expansion Survey The purpose of the survey was to garner business intelligence with respect to growth opportunities and challenges in the Fredericton Region. The project was split into two phases: online (118 responses); and face-to-face, in-depth interviews (50 companies). The final report was completed, and highlights published. Ignite also designed and produced a postcard sent to all companies as a thank you and follow-up. 8 Infrastructure Innovation District: 60+ R&D organizations within a 2km radius Staff Unit: Wade Harrington, Accounting & Operations Michelle Hull, Administrative Assistant Knowledge Park, Atlantic Canada s largest technology and research park, is a clustering environment for knowledge-based companies. The park is home to more than 37 companies and over 800 employees generating an annual GDP impact of $145 million. Knowledge Park is located within the heart of the Innovation District which is a two kilometre radius encompassing over 60 R&D organizations including the University of New Brunswick, which outputs over 75% of the province s university-related research. Through Ignite and Knowledge Park, we are continuing to leverage Innovation District assets in terms of the Digital Product Development Living Lab, by positioning Fredericton as an ideal development and testing ground for a much wider array of gamechanging technologies and services. Cybersecurity In 2016, Knowledge Park proposed phase three of its planned expansion in order to meet the demand of the growing cybersecurity sector. The expansion would include 20 additional acres as a dedicated cybersecurity zone, controlled access, and a security perimeter. This initiative leverages UNB s Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity and the efforts of Opportunities NB s CyberNB to put Fredericton in a national leadership position re: cybersecurity. Fredericton s Product Development Living Lab Multi-sector product development opportunities Innovative companies whose success depends on keeping ahead of the curve in product development see the value and opportunities in Fredericton and its Living Lab Product Development ecosystem which includes: In-market global leadership in diverse sectors High value, world leading research expertise An innovative and entrepreneurial culture A deep talent pool Advanced digital infrastructure A right-sized market testing arena that s readily accessible A repeatable and scalable experience Turn on a dime access to decision makers and stakeholders Digital Product Development Living Lab Fredericton, with its world-leading digital infrastructure and R&D capacity, has become an ideal user-centred development and validation market for a wide array of game-changing technologies and services. From smart grid energy products to cyber security software, Fredericton leverages its small city nimbleness and its globally competitive intellectual and digital assets to provide the perfect environment for digital innovation. We can talk to innovators in the marketplace, to leaders at the university, we can talk to leaders of the utility, the provincial and municipal governments. And we can do it all in one day.
