1 ANNUAL REPORT 2016 Our mission: we develop and provide leadership for our members and community through advocacy, alliances, economic development and education to advance economic prosperity. Welcome to our friends and partners helping us drive business success in Richardson. Accredited as a 5-star chamber by the U.S. Chamber, the RCC is in the top 1 percent of chambers in the nation, recognizing high quality, expertise and strong leadership.
2 Chairman s Message Hard work by our members yielded more great success and progress for the Richardson Chamber and our community in Here are a few of the highlights from my perspective. Education We must attract and develop a qualified workforce to sustain and grow the community. I was proud that my organization, Methodist Richardson Medical Center, teamed with the Richardson Independent School District to provide real-world health sciences training to high school students. The hospital provides RISD with 7,000-square-feet of space for the RISD Health Science Program at Methodist Richardson. Students have access to work areas and operating rooms that are vacated but still operational, giving them hands-on experience in a hospital setting. Once they complete that phase, students move to rotations at the new Renner Road facility where they can be directly involved with caring for patients. The program enrolled 220 students last fall. We need to find more ways for our businesses and schools to work together to enhance our workforce. Communication We increased our effort to tell the community what the Chamber of Commerce does for them. We ran a monthly column in Richardson Today, the city s newsletter, telling residents about the benefits brought to them by Chamber programs. Chamber is 5-star accredited, again! The Chamber originally applied for accreditation in 2010 and received the highest 5-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Our staff and volunteers put in countless hours last year to bring our accreditation up to date, and for the second time, we were awarded the prestigious 5-star accreditation. Only 1 percent of the nation s chambers achieve this elite status. Ken Hutchenrider 2016 Chairman of the Board, President, Methodist Richardson Medical Center The result is a recommendation to city leaders and stakeholders to promote the area as an innovation district with access to resources, transportation and location advantages. The 1,000-acre area is bounded roughly by Campbell Road on the north, Plano Road on the east, Apollo Road on the south and Greenville Avenue on the west. Growth It is impossible not to notice all the quality growth at CityLine, along the U.S. 75 corridor and around the University of Texas at Dallas. This growth is due in part to the hard work and perseverance of the Chamber staff and volunteers during the last decade. Mobility The Chamber has worked hard for years to promote the proposed Cotton Belt commuter rail line from DFW Airport through Richardson and CityLine. We are thrilled that the efforts have paid off with DART approving the plans for funding in 2016 that will make the commuter rail service operational by Thank you to the Chamber staff and the hundreds of volunteers who worked so hard last year to move us forward in achieving our goals. It is a blessing to live and work in a community with so many people committed to making it a better place to live and work. Supporters at a DART meeting lend their support to the Cotton Belt. Collins/East Arapaho Task Force The Economic Division s 2016 targeted goal was to develop innovative ideas to improve the Collins/East Arapaho area. The East Arapaho Task Force is comprised of area stakeholders, city officials and community leaders joining to brainstorm ways to improve the area s vitality. 2
3 Economic Development Goals Attract and retain targeted companies Increase the number, quality and variety of job opportunities Market and promote Richardson The Richardson Economic Development Partnership (REDP) recorded 20 Richardson expansion and relocation projects that will add or retain 2,002 jobs and result in the occupancy of 513,000 square feet of office and flex space. The three largest projects of 2016 were Aprima Medical Software (280 employees from Carrollton), Applied Concepts Inc. (135 employees from Plano) and Qorvo (Richardson expansion for 450 workers). REDP continues to take on areas of revitalization around Richardson. A growing interest has been the revitalization of downtown, and, this year, has extended north to the single-story, office/showroom, or flex space of East Arapaho north to Campbell Road. In 2016, a Chamber task force studied the needs of the area and presented a proposal to the City Council that includes some areas of rezoning and developing a marketing campaign for the area, emphasizing its legacy as an innovation hub, and filling the area with high-quality technical jobs. The Richardson Restaurant Park on 75 is finished and new tenants are moving in. Above, the Halal Guys, a New York-based chain with gyros, falafel and rice, stands beside Wokk Asian Cookhouse and Dog Haus Biergarten. REDP launched a new talent attraction campaign and microsite in an effort to better tell the city s story and attract millennial workers to live, work and play in Richardson. REDP s microsite, RealRichardson.com, connects young professionals with job opportunities and places where they can live in Richardson. Videos showcase elements of Richardson that are fun and make it a destination for upscale urban-minded millennials. The site has had more than 4,000 visits in its first six months. During 2016, the Mayor s Office of International Business was involved in 25 international delegation visits and meetings with foreign dignitaries that included 164 foreign visitors. A recent business development trip to Asia allowed REDP VP Mike Skelton to participate in a TexasOne delegation visit to Japan with 300 executives (pictured below). 4 Events & Programs EDGE awards and Annual Meeting photos courtesy of chamber member A Perfect Foto. The Chamber hosts a number of events to educate, update and connect members. Two different events recognize the companies and individuals who contribute to growing Richardson: EDGE awards and the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting featured U.S. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (pictured above, right) and recognized our volunteers of the year (left). The Citizen of the Year was Frank Kozel, Jr. Volunteers recognized include: Bob Krombach, Preferred Office Solutions; Richardson Young Professionals (Alix Foster, Cordell Reynolds, Jon Brooks); Sandee Treptow, sponsor Reliant; Rebecca Stenoien, The Warren Center; Jolene Hersch, Argo Data; Zhenhua Yao, ZTE; chairmen Charlie Chen and Ken Hutchenrider; President Bill Sproull. EDGE awards went to Richardson Bike Mart, Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at UTD, Whole Foods, Lintec of America, GEICO, Shop Companies, Junior Achievement of Dallas, TI-RFAB. 6 Public Policy The Chamber has a particularly strong working relationship with federal, state and city elected officials. The Public Policy committee works diligently to prepare a legislative agenda to determine top priorities for our city in preperation for the biennual Texas legislative session. The Richardson Chamber is one of the few in the area that produces a scorecard of how our elected officials voted in alignment with this selected legislative agenda. It creates frank dialogue in keeping them accountable to our long-term interests. At the same time, Richardson is attactive for high-profile visits. In the past year alone, the Chamber hosted two U.S. senators, the Texas lieutenant governor, state comptroller and land commissioner. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz visited the Chamber as 8the first stop in a tour to listen to constituents. Cruz has a relationship with Richardson since making it his first major speaking engagement in Texas after his swearing in at the 2013 Annual Meeting. Legislative Alerts richardsonchamber.com/legislative Education & Workforce Goals: Develop a three-year education and workforce plan to meet the Chamber s strategic education and workforce goal Leverage existing opportunities to align community and education needs Enhance awareness of collaborative opportunities among education and the business community Leadership Richardson experienced a year of growth and had the largest class in program history. Additionally, curriculum updates were implemented to mirror the evolving complexion of Richardson and to further enhance leadership. 6 A group in Leadership Richardson XXXII introducing themselves creatively to the rest of the class through a skit.
