1 NEWTON COLLEGE AND CAREER ACADEMY September 2014 Quarterly Report This report consists of informational fact and any activities completed during the quarterly months of July September NCCA Vision The Newton College and Career Academy envisions being a premier teaching and learning environment which prepares associates to be college and career ready in a global market. NCCA Mission The mission of Newton College and Career Academy is to enhance academic achievement and provide associates with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in postsecondary education and the workforce.

2 Newton College and Career Academy S E P T E M B E R Q U A R T E R L Y R E P O R T Vision Statement The Newton College and Career Academy envisions being a premier teaching and learning environment which prepares associates to be college and career ready in a global market. Mission & Goals The mission of Newton College and Career Academy is to enhance academic achievement and provide associates with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in postsecondary education and the workforce. Goals Goal I: To provide students in Newton County high schools with the requisite skills and knowledge to exceed the majority of USDOE performance indicators in Perkins accountability measures in every year of this Charter. Goal II: To increase the number of students in Newton County high schools receiving postsecondary credits through courses offered through DTC and/or jointly through NCCA and DTC and/or other local postsecondary partners. Goal III: To increase the number of instructors with industry experience and to improve the faculty retention rate. Goal IV: To increase the business engagement between industry-based programs and their related business partners. Needs Stand-alone computer monitors for trainers are needed. Office supplies such as storage cabinets, bookshelves, and additional cork boards are needed for the classroom. Furniture is needed for the media center to properly shelf books. Page 1

Internships include: Honda of Conyers in the Automotive Pathway, Newton Medical Center in the Healthcare Pathway, Nisshinbo in the Engineering Division in the Engineering Pathway, and others. Additional interns are employed at the Newton County Board of Education, Porterdale Elementary School and NCCA s The Lounge. Five of our associates have been hired as part of Home Grown Digital and are working through the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI). The Home Grown Digital associates were chosen from the business, marketing and video broadcast pathways. Their clients are businesses who belong to the Covington/Newton County Chamber. Eight associates are also working through the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI) with their company, Music & Memory. See more information below about Music & Memory. Jared Rutberg, president of JRJ Construction, LLC, recruited onsite and hired two marketing associates. They provide marketing services for his companies. Atlanta Gran Prix opened in May, 2014, and continues to partner with NCCA. Atlanta Gran Prix hired two marketing associates Work Based Learning Sites Honda of Conyers is located in Conyers, Georgia. This company serves Atlanta and Stockbridge area. Honda of Conyers has maintained a solid commitment to customers. Sellars Motors Page 2

4 Rutledge Air Newton College and Career Academy Nisshinbo Automotive Manufacturing, Inc. (NAMI) was established in NAMI is Nisshinbo s state-of-the art facility is located in Covington, Georgia. NAMI facilities produce high-quality friction materials and logistic support to serve transportation manufacturers. This Center provides Covington and other surrounding areas with state-of-the-art medical facilities. Newton County Board of Education located in Covington, Georgia. Newton County BOE serves the entire county including the five municipalities located within the county. Newton College and Career Academy The Lounge, is located in the heart of NCCA. This student-based enterprise has been operating since January 14, Newton College and Career Academy Graphic Arts Lab is located in the heart of NCCA. This student-based enterprise has been operating since August, The Academy Bistro - Newton College and Career Academy Graphic Arts Lab is located in the heart of NCCA. This student-based enterprise has been operating since August, Bullritos is located in Covington, Georgia. This is a Tex-Mex restaurant. Atlanta Gran Prix opened in May, 2014, and is partnering with NCCA. Atlanta Gran Prix is located in Covington and hosts corporate events. Page 3

5 Work Ready Northeast Georgia Region Host The Newton County Work-Based Learning Program will host the Northeast Georgia Region meeting September 26, The meeting will begin at Michelin Retread Technologies in Covington which will include an industry tour. The meeting will conclude at The Center. Debra Lary, YAP Coordinator for Newton County and WBL Coordinator for NCCA is the Northeast Georgia Region Vice-Chair for WBL coordinators throughout northeast Georgia will attend. Hunter Hall from the Covington/Newton Chamber and James Johnson, Newton County Office of Workforce Development will both be in attendance as well. Work Ready Desktops 4 ED A new company was formed called Desktops 4 ED that will work out of the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator for the school year. Desktops ED will provide low cost computers to middle school students whose families are considered low income. Desktops 4 ED will be run by NCCA business trainer Ashely Dawson who will work in conjunction with the Newton County Schools Technology Department. Her IT and networking classes will refurbish retired NCSS computers to make available for low income middle school students. Work Ready Home Grown Digital Five of our associates were hired as part of Home Grown Digital and are working through the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator (EBI) for the school year. The Home Grown Digital associates were chosen from the business, marketing and video broadcast pathways. Their clients are businesses who belong to the Covington/Newton County Chamber of Commerce. Marketing Media Management is the company which runs and mentors the Home Grown Digital Group. Recently the Home Grown Digital associates successfully completed all digital marketing for Taste of Newton. Work Ready Music & Memory A new company was formed called Music & Memory that will work out of the Entrepreneurial Business Incubator for the school year. The owner of Right at Home Healthcare in Covington, Georgia, is partnering with NCCA healthcare and video broadcast associates to work on a music therapy program in local nursing homes. Continuous Improvement Cycle Ford Next Generation Learning Community upcoming Event Tyrik Grant will represent NCCA at the Ford NGL Conference. This event will on October 7 th 9 th in Louisville, Kentucky. Ms. Fuhrey (Superintendent), Mr. Schmitt (CTAE Coordinator), Mr. Walker (CEO/Principal), and Dr. Woodard will be attending this conference. Lt. Governor s Summit Newton College and Career Academy will partner up with Rockdale Career Academy to host the Lt. Governor s Summit on November 13 & 14, This event will open up at Rockdale and in the afternoon the visitors will go Triple Horse Productions for a tour. On Friday, the event will resume at Newton College and Career Academy. Michelin Leadership Challenge Plans for school year will be outlined in the coming months. Porterdale C.A.R.E.org Scholarships This is the first year for this award. C.A.R.E.org is based out of Porterdale, Georgia. Plans for school year will be determined by November Page 5

7 Governance & Leadership NCCA conducted a Board of Directors meeting on August 6, Lynn Bugg represents Alcovy, Mike McCrorey represents Eastside, and we do not have representation for Newton High at this time. Four of the seven board members were present. Career & College Focus Dual Enrollment is currently being offered in the following Program Areas: Healthcare Science, Cosmetology, Automotive, and Criminal Justice (Public Safety). To date, NCCA has a total of 98 dual enrolled associates: Cosmetology 30 Intro to Law & Justice 12 Automotive 16 Healthcare CNA 40 Recruitment plans for GPTC will be devised in October Energy Pathway 8 associates enrolled. Currently, we have 17 associates enrolled in the Firefighting Pathway. HillPhoenix has provided a training website as a first step of learning for our NCCA trainer. Work is in process to develop a curriculum for Ag Mechanics. Grade Levels For school year: Total = th = th = th = th = 260 Page 6

8 Enrollment & Student Focus Counselors are creating a survey for associates to complete to express their academic direction and course choices. In addition, there will be an Open House in the Spring 2015 for freshmen associates. Student Support The Associate Board of Directors (ABOD) is under new leadership. Standard & Curriculum NCCA Trainers are required to implement the common syllabi, pacing guides and vocabulary for CTAE courses. Trainers will be administering benchmark assessments during the upcoming school year. End of Pathway Assessments will be administered in May. Benchmark Assessments were administered for all academic and CTAE coursed. Data is constantly being reviewed in Professional Learning Communities. PLC s meetings are Tuesdays of each week. Page 7
